본 문 : 사도행전 2장 42-47절 말씀
This
is the third week of the sermon with the main title of ‘Missional Church’. You
may be wondering what message I am trying to deliver. The first sermon under
this title was about ‘open church and open believers.’ A column with a similar
title and message was put on the paper and posted online. I received many
questions and thoughts regarding what I wrote. There were a few of them that
caught my attention. Someone asked, “what exactly is this ‘open church’ that
you are speaking of?” Another commented, “I thought you were trained in a
conservative theology and I am disappointed in your thoughts.” I understand
where they are coming from. It is the caution against the concept of ‘the open
church.’
There
was a time when the concept of ‘Seeker’s Service’ was popular among young
pastors and forward-thinking churches. Rev. Bill Hybels from Willow Creek
Church in Chicago, IL was researching why people weren’t coming to church.
There were three main reasons. First, people were not satisfied with the
worship services. Worship services were boring and people did not get the
message. People could not relate their lives to the worship services. Second,
there was a cultural difference. Worship services were distant from what people
experienced in the modern world. In the church, there was a thick and heavy
atmosphere that suppressed people. Third, church did not understand people’s
everyday life. Church failed to understand the needs and problems people had.
Church failed to be on the same level with people. In order to solve these
problems, Willow Creek Church started the ‘Seeker’s Service,’ which was
targeted to serve the non-believers. They created worship services that anybody
could easily attend. They got rid of the cultural differences. They removed the
signs of Christianity and did not use biblical terms. They renovated their
buildings to look like other commercial buildings. They utilized many medias
like TV shows and concerts. The topics of the sermons were based on everyday
issues. There was a period when the ‘Seeker’s Service’ was thought to be the
way for modern church.
However,
the Seeker’s Service was soon faced with problems. First, there was a criticism
that the Seeker’s Service may be a good ‘performance’ but it cannot be a
‘worship service.’ It may open the doors to non-believes and bring them closer
to the Gospel, but it failed to have the non-believers truly worship. Also,
because the non-believers were in the center of focus, God was pushed away to
the side. Worship services were developed to be more and more stimulating and
interesting. Instead of trying to communicate with God, they tried to
communicate with people. The biggest problem was that they made the worship
services as the means to an end. They used worship services to bring in people.
Worship service is the end purpose; it can never be a mean to something.
Moreover, this type of worship service made the participants as the audience.
When a few people performed on the stage, most others were in the seat
watching. Worship service is an actively-participating act of giving yourself
to God. Everyone giving the worship should be the subject.
What
was the problem? I do not question the sincerity of Rev. Bill Hybels or the
developers of the Seeker’s Service. They were genuinely trying hard to reach
out to those who never heard the Gospel or who were refusing to learn the
Gospel. The result of their idea and hard work is not something to be talked
down about. Willow Creek Church is still giving the Seeker’s Service. They are
continuing to hold their original intention of bringing people to church. The
problem arose when other churches took the idea but lost their original
intention. Those who reacted negatively against the column I posted are coming
from the idea that the word ‘open’ could have a negative intention. Although
the first intention of trying to understand the problem coming up with ways to
solve that problem may have been right, the process of solving that problem
brought negative results. The biggest negative result of such is losing the
heart of worship.
I
said that the believers, families, and churches all should be open. The
important thing is to remember where is home and where is outside when opening
that door. We must be aware who is opening the door and how is coming in to the
house. We must understand the difference between opening the doors to let
ourselves out to the ways of the world or opening the doors to let out the joy
and grace of God we have to the world. It comes down to each one of us. You can
be open-minded and accepting of the world. However, you must know whether you
were opened by the world or you opened the door yourself to bring the power and
influence to the world.
Let’s take a look at today’s passages. Believers are gathering in the name of the Lord. They hear the Gospel and goes out to the world. Believers are actively engaging with one another. Church is moving like an active volcano. The world sees the believers and the church. The believers’ everyday life was the worship service itself. When the believers praised God, people spoke highly of the church. There is no reason the non-believers would spoke highly of the believers praising God. This shows that the believers truly lived the faithful life of praising God. In today’s passages, who opened to whom? Who’s door opened for whom? Church first opened to God and received His full grace. Then, the church opened widely for the world. Would you think that it was only the church that opened its doors to the world? No, it was all the believers who became the church itself that opened themselves to the world. They showed the power and grace of Gospel through the open door.

Please focus on the last point I made. All the believers of the first generation church were church themselves. All the members becoming the church itself, that is the evangelical and missional church. On the other hand, can a believer not be a church? Yes, you may know the Gospel but not be a believer. Also, you may be a member, but not be the church.
This
is the key point of today’s sermon. When I first heard the concept of Missional
Church, I thought it was an unattainable theological term. Can a church be
fully missional? A church can send missionaries and do missions work. However,
is it possible for all the members of the church to be doing to missional work
in their persons and everyday life? I still think it is impossible. Church is
made of different people. You can be a member of the church without faith. A
child’s faith makes him a believer. There are those who are growing in their
faith. There are those who have mature faith. People who have bad reputation in
society can come to church. Those who do not have good relationship with other
people can come to church. How can every single member of the church can give
all and live only by faith? How can we be called as the ‘Christians’ whichever
way the world looks at us? A church to be fully missional and all the members
to live a missional life; doesn’t that sound impossible?
Then,
should we give up? Should we just consider Missional Church as something only
theoretical? I think there is a way to solve this issue. We must change our
understanding of the words like faith, believers, and church. What part of
speech are these words? They are abstract nouns. They are nouns that have
abstract concepts. I think we need to change our understanding of these words.
The
first generation church is an example. Look how today’s passages are describing
them. Are they active or stationary? Look at the believers. Are they describe
only in one way or are they actively renewing and changing everyday? Did you
faith come to you and stayed as it is or did it move you from the inside and
become the witness for your neighbors? Faith, church, and believers are always
actively engaging. They are not nouns. They are verbs. They are moving. They
are changing. They are energetic. To live as the missional church and
believers, we should not hold those concepts as nouns. We must take them as
active verbs. We should not be still but constantly be changing, communicating,
influencing, and listening. Let’s read today’s passage again.
42
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many
wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together
and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to
anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple
courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere
hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord
added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Each verse is showing that the believers were open to God, open to themselves, open to other believers, and open to the neighbors. Verse 47 says that they were closely communicating with God and openly engaged with the neighbors. What was the result? God added the number of people who were being saved through those missional believers and church. Wouldn’t you want to be like this?
However, I know the reason why some members of the church alienate themselves. They were hurt. “I opened up to him, but he did not open up to me.” “She tried too hard when I wasn’t ready to open up.” “I feel like I am being watched and interfered.” “I think he is talking behind my back.” Sometimes, believers have closed doors for another in the church that is open to God. I also know why the believers and church fail to communicate with the world. “We are too busy.” “We are too tired.” “We come to church to be understood and comforted.” “I need love and grace.” “It is hard enough to live in my self-centered world” “Despite all these, you are asking me to sacrifice myself to communicate with the world?” We may try, but we are quick to quit; it is difficult. We do not care what the world thinks about us as long we are within God’s love and salvation. Church does not move. Faith stopped within the believers. Faith, believers, and church became nouns.
I hope that the first generation church in today’s passages are speaking to you. They were occupied by the Romans. Before that, they were occupied by Greece. Before that, Persia. Before that, Babylonia. The members of the first generation church were born into and grew up in the culture filled with anger. They experienced discrimination and defeat since they were little. However, they heard the Gospel, opened their hearts, and became the believers. Did their new faith change their situation? Were they freed from Romans? They still had all of their problems. Their stress level and oppression is something we cannot compare to. Do you think they were peaceful and kind people when they first formed the church? Did they not hurt each other? Was life prosperous? The answers to these questions are all ‘no.’ Only change they had was the Gospel. When they opened up to God, they lives became evangelical. They had the power of Gospel. Their life, which was full of hate and anger, was changed to the joy of the Gospel.
성도 여러분, 하나님이 우리에게 허락하신 믿음은 동사이어야 합니다. 증거되어야 합니다. 하나님이 우리에게 허락하신 이름, 성도는 동사이어야 합니다. 복음의 능력을 삶으로 드러내야 합니다. 하나님이 우리에게 허락하신 교회는 동사이어야 합니다. 하나님의 나라를 보여줘야 합니다. 저는 우리 미약한 초대교회이지만 충분히 하나님이 주신 이 사명을 감당할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 저 자신과 여러분에게 도전하고 싶습니다. 우리를 성도와 교회라는 아름다운 이름으로 부르시는 주님의 은혜 앞에 선교적인 삶으로 보답할 수 있기를 소망합니다.
Faith that God has granted us should be a verb. It must be witnessed. Our God given name, believers, should be a verb. We must show the power of Gospel through our lives. Our church that God has given should be a verb. We must show the Kingdom of God. I believe our church can take this mission. I want to challenge myself and you. I wish to live a missional life to glorify our God.
