What kind of person should I be?
There is a newspaper called Professors’
Newspaper in Korea. At the end of each year, they choose a phrase that wraps up
that year. For 2017, the phrase “Pa Sa
Hyun Jung” was chosen. It means, “defeating of the evil and coming of the
good.” You probably know why this phrase was chosen by the professors as the
phrase of the year. The runner-up phrase was “Hae Hyun Kyung Jang,” which means
“to put new strings on an instrument”. The third place phrase was “Soo Rak Suk
Chul,” which means “rocks emerged as water disappeared.” The fourth place
phrase was “Jae Jo San Ha,” which means “to build up the nation again.” I
really liked the phrase of the year 2016. It was “Goon Joo Min Soo,” which
means a king is a ship and people are water.” It also means that when water
(people) is raged, it can sink the ship (king). This was demonstrated by
Korea’s Candlelight Protest which led to the impeachment of the president.
What do you think? Is there anyone who would
like to describe the past year with a phrase? Will it be something of regret or
will it be something of joy? I will give you some time to think about a phrase
that you will use as your guiding purpose for the new year of 2018.
It is difficult for me to hear when someone says
that there was nothing memorable from the past year. We are the people of God
living in this world. If we lived without any meaning or joy because we are too
busy, God will be disappointed. He has given us our breath, time, life and its
purpose. Christ carried the cross to give us the grace of salvation and new
life. It will break Christ’s heart if we
lived meaninglessly. To say that there wasn’t anything meaningful, to say that
you just lived day to day is a dangerous way of life.
1. One thing you must remember
God is speaking of one thing we must remember
through Peter in today’s passage. It is
about time. Verse 8 says, “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With
the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.”
God’s time and our time are different. Our time is passing. Our time will meet
with God’s time. In the end, the master of time who has created and given time
to us is God. What do we have to remember? What did we forget?
Peter wanted to make sure to deliver a message
when he wrote his second letter to the people of the first generation church.
He was aware that his time in this world was coming to an end. He wanted to
give a lesson to the believers and church on how to live in this world. In
chapter 1 of 2 Peter, he advises people to participate in God’s character. In
chapter 2, he mentions Sodom and Gomorrah who were not ready for God’s time. In
chapter 3, he ends his letter. What was the lesson that Peter wanted to give
about the last days?
Peter already spoke about the last days in his
first letter. 1 Peter 5:8-9 says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the
devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist
him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers
throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” Paul and John
too taught the first generation church about the last days. The problem was
that people who received the message about the last days were preparing in
wrong ways. Jesus once said this to the disciples in Mark 9:1, “And he said to
them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before
they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.” In the book of Acts,
there is a scene where the angels speak to the disciples while Jesus is
ascending to the Heaven. In Acts 1:11, it says, “Men of Galilee,” they said,
“why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been
taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go
into heaven.” Based on these words, there were believers who expected Jesus
would come back in their lifetime. They did not do anything except wait for the
last days. They fell into trials when they saw their fellow worshipers get
captured and martyred. They grew impatient and started to doubt God’s promise
about the last days and the return of Jesus Christ. Peter is talking to those
who are longing for the return of Jesus. He is giving a message about the most
important thing that they must remember; it is about God’s time.
2. God’s Wish
Peter explained about the difference between
God’s time and man’s time in verse 8. In verse 9, he says that there is
something God wants in those times. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow in
keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with
you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” He
explains the reason why God’s time hasn’t come. He says there is a reason there
is a difference between God’s time and people’s time. It tied to God’s wish.
God is very patient with the church,
believers, and this world. His patience is in terms of his time. He wants to
give everyone enough chance for a complete repentance. Ultimately, he wants
everyone to hear the Gospel and receive salvation.
Speaking with Nicodemus about salvation, Jesus
said in John 3:14-15, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so
the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal
life in him.” This conversation is based on the scene in Numbers 21:8-9, “The
Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten
can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole.
Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they
lived.” When the people of Israel complained and resented God in the desert,
they received a punishment. The snakes in the desert attacked people. Many have
died. When people finally came to repent, God told moses to make a bronze snake
and put it on a pole. Whenever someone looked up at the snake with faith, they
were healed. God wanted the people of Israel to be saved through their faith in
looking at the bronze snake. However, for those who did not believe that they
can be healed, the bronze snake was nothing more than just a bronze snake.
In the Ancient Rome, political prisoners were
hanged on trees. It showed how cruelly peolpe would be killed if they went
against Rome. On the high hills of every country and every city they conquered,
they hanged the bodies of the people who resisted. Calvary was the hill used by
the Roman legion to persecute people in Jerusalem. It was the site where Jesus
was crucified. This was already prophesied and explained by Jesus in his
conversation with Nicodemus. God’s wish was for everyone to look up with faith
to Jesus on the cross. God put the world in his own time and showed the way of
the cross. It is the way of salvation. This is God’s time of patience.
What kind of person should I be?
We know this for sure; Christ will return like
a thief at night, when no one knows and when no one is expecting. Jesus already
spoke about this many times to his disciples. Only God knows when and how Jesus
will return. The church and believers should only long for God’s time and wait.
Peter in today’s passage says that the day of
the Lord will come like a thief. Then, he asks an important question, “what
kind of people ought you to be?” This is important. How should the people of
the first generation church be? In verses 11 through 13 it says, “You ought to
live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its
coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and
the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are
looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”
We must do two things. First is to look forward to God’s time and long for
God’s Kingdom. This is about our faith. Another is our life. We must live holy
and godly. Our faith and life should go together. Our faith in God’s time and
the life in God’s Kingdom should be in harmony.
4.
Therefore, like this!
In verses 14 and 17, Peter says, “so then” and
“therefore” to reinforce his message.
First, verses 14 through 16 starts with “so
then” and can be summarized to be God’s work and our work. God is very patient
with us. We must live holy and godly everyday. Only God knows when and how
Christ will return. However, the believers of the first generation church
interpreted God’s words wrong. They brought themselves to destruction. Our job in this God given time is to work
hard so that what we believe may appear through our life. Our faith should
become our life. 2)
Then, verse 17 through 18 start with
“therefore.” Peter tells to be careful not to fall for the ways of the lawless,
but focus only on knowing more about Jesus Christ and his grace. When and how
the last days would come is not important. What is important is to know Jesus
Christ who will return in the last days. It is important to properly understand
the grace of the salvation through the cross. You must ask the right question.
There is a more important question than, “will I be saved? Or when will Jesus come?”
The more important question is Jesus. You must focus on Christ. Bigger the fear
and worry, bigger the chance you will be tempted. Peter is telling us to live
by the faith in Jesus Christ who is our savior, not by the fear about the last
days.
Let’s summarize today’s sermon. The believers
and church must prepare for the day we meet with our Lord. The fact that God
graciously granted time for us means that our time will come to an end and we
will enter the time of God. However, many believers and church misunderstood
the difference between God’s time and our time. They entered into a wrong path
of faith. Christ will return like a thief, in the time when God has set. We
must not get impatient and we must not be unfaithful. Then, how should we live?
Peter recommended two things. First, our faith should become our life itself.
Second, we must only focus on Jesus Christ. We must focus on the grace of the
Cross. In other words, until we meet with our Lord, we must live as the
believers and church in this world. How? We must live like Jesus. We must live
according to the ways Jesus showed us. Our knowledge of Jesus should become our
own life. As God’s words have become flesh, our faith should become our life.
God is speaking to us through Peter. How did you live this past year? How would you like to live in this coming year? I hope you would not say it was too busy to remember or you cannot believe how time flew by. I hope you can say you lived by faith. I hope you can say you worked your best in your job, home, church, and every relationship to spread the Kingdom of God. I hope you can confess that you will do your best to live as the people of God’s Kingdom. God has given us a gift of the year 2018. I am happy to live that time together with you. I hope that we will all be thankful and joyful for such grace. I hope we will serve the Kingdom of God and live holy and godly life. |
