This Defenseless Country

Ezekiel 22.30-31

 

¹⁷          Then the word of the LORD came to me:

¹⁸          “Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to me; all of them are the copper, tin, iron and lead left inside a furnace. They are but the dross of silver.  ¹⁹ Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says:

‘Because you have all become dross, I will gather you into Jerusalem.  ²⁰ As men gather silver, copper, iron, lead and tin into a furnace to melt it with a fiery blast, so will I gather you in my anger and my wrath and put you inside the city and melt you.  ²¹ I will gather you and I will blow on you with my fiery wrath, and you will be melted inside her.  ²² As silver is melted in a furnace, so you will be melted inside her, and you will know that I the LORD have poured out my wrath upon you.’“ 

 

²³                Again the word of the LORD came to me: 

²⁴                  “Son of man, say to the land,

‘You are a land that has had no rain or showers in the day of wrath.’ 

²⁵              There is a conspiracy of her princes within her like a roaring lion tearing its prey;

they devour people, take treasures and precious things and make many widows within her. 

²⁶                 Her priests do violence to my law and profane my holy things;

they do not distinguish between the holy and the common;

they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean;

and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them. 

²⁷                 Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey;

they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain. 

²⁸                 Her prophets whitewash these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations.

They say, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says’-- when the LORD has not spoken. 

²⁹                The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery;

they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the alien, denying them justice. 

 

³⁰          “I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none.  ³¹ So I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done, declares the Sovereign LORD.”

Ezekiel 22:17-31

 

  여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되 인자야 이스라엘 족속이 내게 찌꺼기가 되었나니 곧 풀무 불 가운데에 있는 놋이나 주석이나 쇠나 납이며 은의 찌꺼기로다 그러므로 주 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하셨느니라 너희가 다 찌꺼기가 되었은즉 내가 너희를 예루살렘 가운데로 모으고 사람이 은이나 놋이나 쇠나 납이나 주석이나 모아서 풀무 불 속에 넣고 불을 불어 녹이는 것 같이 내가 노여움과 분으로 너희를 모아 거기에 두고 녹이리라 내가 너희를 모으고 내 분노의 불을 너희에게 불면 너희가 그 가운데에서 녹되 은이 풀무 불 가운데에서 녹는 것 같이 너희가 그 가운데에서 녹으리니 나 여호와가 분노를 너희 위에 쏟은 줄을 너희가 알리라

여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되 인자야 너는 그에게 이르기를 너는 정결함을 얻지 못한 땅이요 진노의 날에 비를 얻지 못한 땅이로다 하라  그 가운데에서 선지자들의 반역함이 우는 사자가 음식물을 움킴 같았도다 그들이 사람의 영혼을 삼켰으며 재산과 보물을 탈취하며 과부를 그 가운데에 많게 하였으며 그 제사장들은 내 율법을 범하였으며 나의 성물을 더럽혔으며 거룩함과 속된 것을 구별하지 아니하였으며 부정함과 정한 것을 사람이 구별하게 하지 아니하였으며 그의 눈을 가리어 나의 안식일을 보지 아니하였으므로 내가 그들 가운데에서 더럽힘을 받았느니라 그 가운데에 그 고관들은 음식물을 삼키는 이리 같아서 불의한 이익을 얻으려고 피를 흘려 영혼을 멸하거늘 그 선지자들이 그들을 위하여 회를 칠하고 스스로 허탄한 이상을 보며 거짓 복술을 행하며 여호와가 말하지 아니하였어도 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 하였으며 이 땅 백성은 포악하고 강탈을 일삼고 가난하고 궁핍한 자를 압제하고 나그네를 부당하게 학대하였으므로 이 땅을 위하여 성을 쌓으며 성 무너진 데를 막아 서서 나로 하여금 멸하지 못하게 할 사람을 내가 그 가운데에서 찾다가 찾지 못하였으므로 내가 내 분노를 그들 위에 쏟으며 내 진노의 불로 멸하여 그들 행위대로 그들 머리에 보응하였느니라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

A.      In the ancient world, a wall was a lovely thing!

·        Wasn’t beautiful because of the construction—though some were

·        Beautiful because behind a wall, you and your family were safe

·        Defense against a threat; Ezra calls wall: “a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem” Ezra 9:9

·        Wall was a strong defense that, if defended, could keep attackers out of the city for years.

·        Strategies for defeating a wall:

o   Trickery—spy; sneaking in the door

o   Find a way under

o   Climb

o   Batter down

o   Trap the people inside and wait for their food and water to run out

·        Because of this strong defense, a broken wall became the symbol of a conquered city

o   2 Kings 14.13—Jehoash broke down a 600 ft section if Jerusalem’s wall

o   Babylon broke down the wall completely

o   Nehemiah, when he heard that Jerusalem’s wall was still broken down, they were in disgrace

 

A.           고대에 성벽은 참 매력적인 것이었습니다! 건축 중이기에 아름답진 않지만, 성벽 뒤에서 여러분과 여러분의 가족이 안전하게 거할 수 있기에 아름다웠습니다. 또한 위협에 맞서는 방어물이기도 했습니다. 에스라는 성벽을 “유다와 예루살렘에서 우리에게 울타리를 주셨나이다” 라고 표현합니다(“a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem” 스 9:9). 성벽은 방어되기만 한다면, 수년 동안 성 밖의 공격을 막아낼 수 있는 강력한 방어물이 되었습니다. 성벽을 무찌를 수 있는 전략으로는 속임수- 첩자: 문에서 기회를 옅보는 것, 지하 길을 찾는 것, 올라타 넘어가는 것, 때려 부수는 것, 성 안 사람들을 가둬서 물과 음식이 떨어질 때까지 기다리는 방법이 있습니다.  그 강력한 방어력 때문에, 무너진 성벽은 정복된 성의 상징이 되었습니다.   열왕기하 14장 13절에서는 이스라엘 왕 요아스가 예루살렘 성벽을 사백 규빗(600 ft)까지 헐었습니다. 바벨론은 성벽을 완전히 무너뜨렸고, 느헤미야는 예루살렘 성벽이 여전히 무너져 있다는 소식을 듣고 수치를 받았다고 말했습니다.

 

 

B.      Ezekiel 22.30-31

“I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none.”

·        Using this image of a defensive border, but was not speaking of a physical wall

o   What the people needed defense against was the judgment of God

o   What physical wall could keep God away?

·        In his day

o   Society was becoming swamped in sin

o   Saturated people from the street to the palace

o   General population—leaders (of the state) to the individual:

§  Uninterested in justice

§  Taking advantage of others

§  All for personal prosperity

o   Religious leaders

§  Were rejecting the Word of God

§  Failure to teach the difference between right and wrong

§  Teaching as truth what the Lord did not say

·        Level of proper behavior & righteousness in society as a whole was sinking ever lower

·        As it did, God’s judgment began crowding in

·        Wall that held back judgment, then as now, was proper belief, behavior, and submission to God

o   Intangible, but very real

o   Found in the individual’s thoughts and behavior

o   Found in our collective culture; lifestyles; movements; institutions

o   Found in our religious understandings and behavior

 

B.           에스겔 22:30-31

“이 땅을 위하여 성을 쌓으며 성 무너진 데를 막아 서서 나로 하여금 멸하지 못하게 할 사람을 내가 그 가운데에서 찾다가 찾지 못하였으므로”

•             여기서 방어벽의 이미지를 사용하지만, 실제 물리적인 성벽을 말하고 있는 것은 아닙니다. 사람들이 맞서서 방어할 필요가 있는 것은 하나님의 심판입니다. 어떤 물리적인 성벽이 하나님으로부터 멀어지게 할 수 있을까요?

선지자 에스겔 당시에 사회는 죄의 늪에 빠져있었고, 거리에서부터 궁궐에 이르기까지 만연했습니다.

일반 대중 – 지도자에서부터 개개인까지 정의에 무관심했고, 다른 이를 이용했으며, 모두 개인의 번영에만 몰두해 있었습니다.

종교지도자 역시 하나님의 말씀을 거부하고 있었고, 옳고 그름의 차이를 가르치는데 실패했으며, 여호와 하나님께서 말씀하지 않으신 것을 진리라고 가르치고 있었습니다.

•             사회 전체로서의 올바른 행위와 정의의 수준은 밑바닥으로 가라앉고 있었습니다.  그와 마찬가지로, 하나님의 심판 역시 점점 다가오기 시작했습니다. 심판을 지연시키고 있던 성벽은 하나님께 향한 올바른 믿음, 행위, 그리고 복종이었습니다. 무형이기는 하지만 확실히 실재하는 것입니다. 개개인의 사고와 행동에서 발견되며, 우리 공통의 문화와 생활방식, 동향, 제도에서도 발견되고, 우리의 종교적 이해와 행위에서도 발견됩니다.

 

C.      When we realize this, looking at this Nation, we cry out, “We are defeated!  We are disgraced!  For our protections against judgment are lying in ruins about us!”

·        In our day, we are watching the systematic dismantling of this nation’s wall of protection.

·        The horrors of what happened at the Florida School last week is merely a symptom of a far deeper and fatal disease

o   We moan about it...

o   We blame objects for the crime, but try to understand the motives of the criminal

o   But it is like being terminally ill with the Cancer, and complaining that the lump makes us look fat

·        Historically, Christianity has been a great engine of social protection

o   great revivals of the 17 & 1800s pulled the Nation back from secularism and sin

o   anti-slavery movement largely driven by Christian faith

o   I could go on;

o   With the mounting rejection of Christian truth and principles, we are watching the fall of the wall

o   We can debate if a southern wall needs to be built, but we are tearing down, brick by brick, the spiritual wall of projection and are defenseless

·        We Christians bear some of the responsibility for the condition of this nation

o   We have grow weary of doing good

o   We have accepted this destruction, saying it is out of our power, or it is normal, or even good

o   Some churches in this country have even put their hands to the work

 

C.           우리가 이 사실을 인식하게 될 때, 이 나라를 보면서 우리는 다음과 같이 외칩니다. “우리가 패하였도다! 우리가 수치를 받는 구나! 심판을 막아주는 우리의 보호물이 무너져 폐허가 되는구나!”

현재 우리시대에서 우리는 이 나라의 보호벽이 조직적으로 해체되고 있는 것을 목격하고 있습니다. 지난 주 플로리다 주 고등학교에서 발생한 참상은 훨씬 더 깊고 치명적인 질병의 한 증상에 불과합니다.  우리는 그에 대해 불평하고, 범죄의 객체를 탓하지만, 범죄자의 동기를 이해하려 애씁니다. 그러나 이는 불치병 암과 같은 것임에도 우리는 혹이 더 뚱뚱하게 보이게 한다는 불평을 해대는 것과 같습니다.

역사상 기독교는 훌륭한 사회 보호의 중추적인 장치였습니다. 17세기와 18세기 기독교의 위대한 부흥기는 세속주의와 죄에서 이 국가를 철수시켰습니다. 기독교 신앙에 의해 크게 주도된 노예 해방 운동도 있었습니다. 기독교 진리와 원칙을 거부하는 증가 추세로 우리는 이 성벽이 무너지고 있는 것을 보게 됩니다.  우리는 남쪽 성벽이 세워질 필요가 있는가에 대해서 논쟁할 수 있습니다만, 우리는 뿔뿔이 흩어지는 해체를 경험하게 됩니다. 영적인 보호벽이 무방비 상태가 되는 것입니다.

우리 그리스도인은 이 나라 상태에 대한 상당한 책임을 떠맡고 있습니다.  우리는 선한 일을 행하는 데 지쳐 있습니다. 우리는 ‘우리의 능력 밖이다,’ 또는 ‘이게 정상이고 오히려 잘된 일이다’ 라고 말하면서 이 파괴를 받아들이고 있습니다. 이 나라 어떤 교회는 심지어 그 일에 적극 가담하고 있습니다.

 

 

D.      Is the destruction of our wall too far along?

         Are we beyond salvation?

         What shall we do?

·        1) requires LABOR

o   Question: Who tore down the wall in the first place?

§  The people, not some impersonal force

§  We will often find ourselves working against the will of the crowd

§  Even in our churches, we will often be unpopular

§  Must put our hand to the task

o   Work to rebuild the wall

§  Stop collaborating with those tearing it down

·        Looking at what they look at

·        Dressing the way they dress

·        Talking the way they talk

·        Doing the things they do

·        The wall is build out of our beliefs, thoughts, and actions...

§  Set an example (opposite of the last)

§  Get involved with the work

§  Contribute the materials

§  Feed the laborers

o   This will not be enough:

 

D. 우리 영적 보호벽의 파괴가 너무 많이 진행된 것일까요? 우리는 구원에서 떨어져 있는 것일까요? 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요?

 1) 수고가 필요합니다.

o           질문: 누가 첫째로 성벽을 무너뜨렸나요? 사람들입니다. 자연력과 같은 인간 외적인 힘이 아닙니다. 우리는 종종 군중의 의지에 반하여 작용하고 있는 우리 자신을 발견할 것입니다. 심지어 우리 교회에서도 우리는 종종 인기가 없을 것입니다. 그 과업에 가담해야 합니다.

o             성벽 재건을 위한 작업: 성벽을 해체하려는 무리들과의 협업을 중단하고, 그들이 보고 있는 것을 보며, 그들이 입는 대로 입고, 그들이 말하는 대로 말하며, 그들이 하는 대로 행하는 것입니다. 성벽은 우리의 믿음과 생각, 그리고 행동으로 지어집니다. 본보기를 보이며, 그 사역에 가담합니다. 도구와 자재를 제공하고, 수고하는 이들에게 음식을 제공합니다.

o             이것으로는 충분하지 않을 것입니다.

 

·        2) Call for SELF-SACRIFICE

o   Must put ourselves in the broken down gap in the wall of protection and protect these people with our lives

o   Must seek to turn back God’s judgment

o   Ezekiel said that God “looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before [Him] in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but ... found none”

o   Immediately, we think of Moses:

2) 자기희생이 필요합니다.

o             우리 자신을 보호벽 안 무너진 틈으로 밀어 넣고 이들을 우리 목숨을 다해 보호해야 합니다. 하나님의 심판을 되돌리도록 해야 합니다. 에스겔은 다음과 같이 말합니다. 하나님께서 “이 땅을 위하여 성을 쌓으며 성 무너진 데를 막아 서서 나로 하여금 멸하지 못하게 할 사람을 내가 그 가운데에서 찾다가 찾지 못하였으므로” 

o             우리는 여기서 모세를 생각하게 됩니다 :

 

Psalm 106:21-23 

²¹ They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt, ²² miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.  ²³ So he said he would destroy them—had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them.

§  Idolatry

§  Moses—

시편106:21-23 

애굽에서 큰 일을 행하신 그의 구원자 하나님을 그들이 잊었나니 그는 함의 땅에서 기사와 홍해에서 놀랄 만한 일을 행하신 이시로다 그러므로 여호와께서 그들을 멸하리라 하셨으나 그가 택하신 모세가 그 어려움 가운데에서 그의 앞에 서서 그의 노를 돌이켜 멸하시지 아니하게 하였도다

           우상 숭배

 

Exodus 32:11-14

¹¹ ... sought the favor of the LORD his God. "O LORD," he said, "why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?  ¹² Why should the Egyptians say, 'It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.  ¹³ Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.'"  ¹⁴ Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

§  Stood in the broken part of the wall of protection and placed himself between God’s wrath and the people and saved them

§  Even though they had no idea what was going on

o   Of course, we think of our Lord Jesus.

출애굽기 32:11-14

모세가 그의 하나님 여호와께 구하여 이르되 여호와여 어찌하여 그 큰 권능과 강한 손으로 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내신 주의 백성에게 진노하시나이까 어찌하여 애굽 사람들이 이르기를 여호와가 자기의 백성을 산에서 죽이고 지면에서 진멸하려는 악한 의도로 인도해 내었다고 말하게 하시려 하나이까 주의 맹렬한 노를 그치시고 뜻을 돌이키사 주의 백성에게 이 화를 내리지 마옵소서 주의 종 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘을 기억하소서 주께서 그들을 위하여 주를 가리켜 맹세하여 이르시기를 내가 너희의 자손을 하늘의 별처럼 많게 하고 내가 허락한 이 온 땅을 너희의 자손에게 주어 영원한 기업이 되게 하리라 하셨나이다 여호와께서 뜻을 돌이키사 말씀하신 화를 그 백성에게 내리지 아니하시니라

           모세 - 보호벽이 무너진 데에 서서 하나님의 진노와 이스라엘 백성 사이에 자신을 세워두고 그들을 구원합니다. 심지어 백성들은 무슨 일이 진행되고 있는지 전혀 깨닫지 못하는 데도 말입니다.

 

o             물론, 우리는 주 예수 그리스도에 대해서도 생각합니다.

 

Isaiah 53:3-12

³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.

§  Why?

Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.  ⁴ Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.  ⁵ But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.  ⁶ We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all

 

(12) he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

§  It was the work of Christ to stand in the gap

§  He placed everything He had between Us and God’s judgment

§  And saved us

·        It is time for us to get up and stand in that gap

o   We must protect these people with our own lives

o   We must pray

o   We must intercede for them with God

o   We must be the one who answers the call:

Be the man,

Be the woman,

among them who [will] build up the wall and stand before [God] in the gap on behalf of this [nation] so [God will] not have to destroy it

Don’t make God say:

 I found none. 

 

이사야 53:3-12

그는 멸시를 받아 사람들에게 버림 받았으며 간고를 많이 겪었으며 질고를 아는 자라 마치 사람들이 그에게서 얼굴을 가리는 것 같이 멸시를 당하였고 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다 그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘 우리는 생각하기를 그는 징벌을 받아 하나님께 맞으며 고난을 당한다 하였노라 그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다 우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘 여호와께서는 우리 모두의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키셨도다 그가 곤욕을 당하여 괴로울 때에도 그의 입을 열지 아니하였음이여 마치 도수장으로 끌려 가는 어린 양과 털 깎는 자 앞에서 잠잠한 양 같이 그의 입을 열지 아니하였도다 그는 곤욕과 심문을 당하고 끌려 갔으나 그 세대 중에 누가 생각하기를 그가 살아 있는 자들의 땅에서 끊어짐은 마땅히 형벌 받을 내 백성의 허물 때문이라 하였으리요 그는 강포를 행하지 아니하였고 그의 입에 거짓이 없었으나 그의 무덤이 악인들과 함께 있었으며 그가 죽은 후에 부자와 함께 있었도다 여호와께서 그에게 상함을 받게 하시기를 원하사 질고를 당하게 하셨은즉 그의 영혼을 속건 제물로 드리기에 이르면 그가 씨를 보게 되며 그의 날은 길 것이요 또 그의 손으로 여호와께서 기뻐하시는 뜻을 성취하리로다 그가 자기 영혼의 수고한 것을 보고 만족하게 여길 것이라 나의 의로운 종이 자기 지식으로 많은 사람을 의롭게 하며 또 그들의 죄악을 친히 담당하리로다 그러므로 내가 그에게 존귀한 자와 함께 몫을 받게 하며 강한 자와 함께 탈취한 것을 나누게 하리니 이는 그가 자기 영혼을 버려 사망에 이르게 하며 범죄자 중 하나로 헤아림을 받았음이니라 그러나 그가 많은 사람의 죄를 담당하며 범죄자를 위하여 기도하였느니라

 

          그 사이에 서 있는 것은 예수 그리스도의 사역이었습니다.

          예수님은 우리와 하나님의 심판 사이에 그가 갖고 계신 모든 것을 두셨습니다.

          그리고 우리를 구원하셨습니다.

•           이제 우리가 일어서서 그 사이에 서 있어야 할 시간입니다.

o          우리는 우리의 삶을 다해 이 사람들을 보호해야 합니다.

o          우리는 기도해야 합니다.

o          우리는 그들을 위해 하나님께 중보해야 합니다.

o          우리는 그 부르심에 응답하는 사람이어야 합니다:

그 남자가 되십시오. 그 여자가 되십시오.

“이 땅(나라)를 위하여 성을 쌓으며 성 무너진 데를 막아서서 나(하나님)으로 멸하지 못하게 할 사람을 그 가운데서”

하나님께서 “얻지 못한 고로” 라고 말씀하시지 않게 하십시오.
