Title : The author of life

Introduction - Tinkerbell

We have a very small dog with a very big mouth

When I walk home from work, she usually knows im coming before I turn the corner

She howls, barks at the front window, runs to the door

When she doesn’t know it’s me: she doesn’t make a sound, and hides behind my wife!

When I speak she comes over to the door

When she hears my voice, she recognizes it, she knows me, and she comes to me

Jesus is the Shepherd

Jesus is our Shepherd because He calls to His people and those who are His respond.

‣ He knows us, and we know Him.

‣ We recognize Him from afar.

Not because of gifts or threats

It as if we see Him across a busy street, and our hearts jump, and we run to Him.

‣ We see this recognition going on in verses 20 & 21. Those who don’t recognize Jesus say:

“He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?”

But the others reply:

“These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon.

Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

These people may not know just WHO Jesus is, but they recognize Him.

Jesus is our Shepherd because He protects us, saves us, and loves us by laying down His life for His “sheep”, that is for His people, that is for us.

Jesus is the Beloved

Jesus saves us by dying for us.

Jesus chose to surrender His life for His people; therefore, the Father loves Him.

This is the obedience of Jesus.

The Father gave Jesus this mission, and Jesus obeyed.

Remember His agony in Gethsemane; it wasn’t an easy thing to obey.

Sometimes, when I’m out I hear a child speaking to their parent.

“Yes, Daddy.”

It always makes me remember when my babies were small.

I never asked such an obedience of my children.

But what joy I had, and still have, when they listen to my words!

Yet, God asked and Jesus obeyed.

Jesus sets the way for us to follow.

This is the obedience of Jesus – to submit to death.

The mission was submission - to death at the hands of His creation.

As He said, “I lay down my life.”

He didn’t make a bomb and blow up people; He allowed them to abuse His person.

I’d be screaming out, “I’m innocent!” or “This is unjust!”

All this was true for Him, but it was the price of obedience and love.

This is the obedience of Jesus – to lay down His life.

The reality is that no one could take His life from Him.

His life could not be stolen by anyone.

“In Him was life.”

He spoke all life into existence.

He could not be killed by puny humans.

“When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

The soldiers broke the legs of the other victims in order to hasten their deaths.

“But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead” they pierced His side to make certain.

Jesus tells us, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” John 10:18

He lay down His life of His own free will, by His own decision.

We might be tempted to think this means Jesus died voluntarily, that He agreed to be killed for us.

That is not the meaning.

This is the obedience of Jesus – to make final offering for sin.

Jesus’ death was sacrificial.

Jesus was Himself the sacrifice.

If He was simply killed on our behalf, He would be the pure and powerful sacrifice.

However, Jesus was also acting as our High Priest making the atonement offering for our sin.

“For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.”

By God’s will, Jesus was given the mission to offer His life for the sheep.

“And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

So, Jesus had to die for us as sacrifice AND kill the sacrifice for us as our High Priest.

This is the authority of Jesus – He has power over death and life.

John tells us in great detail how Jesus was able to raise a man from death.

And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

This is the authority of Jesus – He has authority to lay down His own life and to take it up again.

He tells us this clearly.

He commands death and He dies.

Furthermore, He commands life, and He rises from the grave.

The same powerful command that calls all things out of nothing

also ends His own life

and calls Himself out of the grave, never to die again.

We could arrange our own death, perhaps, but not like Jesus.

He had to CHOOSE to die physically, and then He died.

He CHOSE to live once more, and He was raised.

This is the incomprehensible power of Jesus.

Within Him was the inextinguishable existence of the Son of God.

He was untouched by the executioner.

He lay aside human life, and He took it up again.

This is the divine authority of the Son of God.

Death and life are at His command.

He can create by His authority; and by His authority He can destroy and create anew.

We often think of God as an awesomely powerful Being; and He is.

But, His power answers to His authority.

Whatever He commands will be.

Jesus is unlike any other figure in history.

No founder of any othe religion can command their own death, not the way Jesus did.

No religious figure, no scientist, philosopher, politician, or celebrity can command life from death and life will arise.

It humbles us; and demands we look at all powerful people with a clear, realistic eye.

It turns us back to our One Shepherd, Who has such great power.

This is the powerful salvation Jesus has made for us.

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

Jesus’ death cleans our sin; Jesus’ life grants us new life in Him.

This is the powerful hope Jesus has made for us.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

From Adam came our death, and because of Adam we all experience death.

From Jesus comes life from death, and all in Him we will experience resurrection.

This reminds us again of the centrality of His Resurrection in our Christian experience.

The Incarnation (and Christmas) is wonderful and necessary and powerful.

The Resurrection (and Easter) is the ultimate demonstration of Jesus’ power, authority, and love.

Salvation would not be complete with only the death of Christ; we need also His resurrection.

We would not be complete with forgiveness if we did not also have new life to God.

So, let us renew our allegiance to live for our Powerful Shepherd!

Let us consider death weaker than life.

Let us count the new life Jesus gives us more precious than this perishing life.

Let us say after Paul:

Indeed, [we] count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake [we] have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that [we] may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of [our] own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith: that [we] may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible [we] may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Let us look to Jesus, the Author of life, to grant us the overwhelming power of the Resurrection.

Hold dear His promise to us:

Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

저희 집엔 엄청 큰 입을 갖고 있는 아주 작은 개 한 마리가 있습니다. 그 개는 보통 제가 퇴근해서 돌아올 때 코너를 돌아 들어 오기 전부터 압니다. 창가에서부터 짖어대고는 문으로 달려옵니다. 제가 들어온 것을 몰랐을 때에는 소리를 내지 않고 제 아내 뒤로 숨어버립니다! 제가 말하기 시작하면 그제서야 문으로 다가옵니다. 내 목소리를 듣고 알아챕니다. 그 개는 저를 알고 제게로 다가옵니다.

예수님은 목자이십니다.

예수님은 우리 목자이십니다. 예수님은 그의 백성과 그에게 반응을 보이는 사람들을 부르시기 때문입니다.

‣ 예수님은 우리를 아시고, 우리도 그분을 압니다.

‣ 우리는 아주 멀리서도 그분을 알아봅니다. 선물이나 위협 때문이 아닙니다. 그것은 우리가 분주한 거리 반대편에서 그 분을 뵈었을 때, 우리의 심장이 뛰고 그 분께 달려가는 것과 같습니다.

‣ 이와 같이 알아보는 것은 오늘 본문 20절과 21절에 나와 있습니다. 예수님을 알아보지 못하는 사람들은 이렇게 말합니다: “그가 귀신 들려 미쳤거늘 어찌하여 그 말을 듣느냐?” 그러나 어떤 이들은 이렇게 답합니다: “이 말은 귀신 들린 자의 말이 아니라 귀신이 맹인의 눈을 뜨게 할 수 있느냐?”

이 사람들은 아마도 예수님께서 누구신지 모르지만, 그 분을 알아보기는 한 겁니다.

예수님은 우리 목자이십니다. 예수님은 우리를 보호하시고 구원하시며 그의 “양”, 즉 그의 백성인 우리를 위해 목숨을 버리기까지 우리를 사랑하시기 때문입니다.

예수님은 사랑받는 자이십니다.

예수님은 우리를 위해 죽으심으로 우리를 구원하십니다. 예수님은 그의 백성을 위해 그의 목숨을 버리는 선택을 하셨습니다. 그래서 하나님 아버지께서 예수님을 사랑하십니다.

이것은 예수님의 순종하심입니다.

하나님 아버지께서 예수님께 이 사명을 주셨습니다. 그리고 예수님께서는 순종하셨습니다.

겟세마네 동산에서 겪으신 예수님의 고통을 기억하십시오; 순종하는 것은 결코 쉬운 것이 아니었습니다. 가끔씩 밖에서 저는 아이들이 자기 부모들에게 말하는 것을 듣게 됩니다. “예, 아빠.” 이것은 항상 제 아이들이 아주 어렸을 때의 일을 기억나게 합니다. 저는 제 아이들에게 그런 식의 순종을 요구한 적이 결코 없었습니다. 그러나, 아이들이 제 말을 듣고 순종한다는 것은 그 때나 지금도 여전히 얼마나 기쁜 것인지 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님은 요구하셨고, 예수님은 순종하셨습니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 따라야 할 방식을 설정해 놓으십니다.

이것은 예수님의 순종하심- 죽기까지 복종하심 입니다.

이 사명은 복종하심- 그의 피조물의 손에 의한 죽음이었습니다. 그가 “내가 내 목숨을 버린다”고 말씀하셨을 때, 그는 사람들에게 폭탄을 만들어 폭파시키지 않으셨습니다: 그는 사람들이 그의 인성을 욕보이고 학대하도록 허용하셨습니다. 저라면, “나는 무죄야!” “이건 부당하고 불공평해!”라고 고함을 질러댔을 것입니다. 이 모든 것이 그분께는 사실이었지만, 그것은 순종과 사랑의 대가였던 것입니다.

이것은 예수님의 순종하심- 그의 목숨을 버리는 것입니다.

사실은 예수님께로부터 그의 생명을 빼앗을 수 있는 이는 아무도 없다는 것입니다. 그의 생명은 그 누구도 빼앗을 수 없습니다. “그 안에 생명이 있었으니”(요 1:4). 그는 말씀으로 모든 만물을 존재하게 하셨습니다. 그는 작고 보잘것없는 인간에 의해 죽으실 분이 아니십니다. “예수께서 신 포도주를 받으신 후에 이르시되 “다 이루었다” 하시고 머리를 숙이니 영혼이 떠나가시니라”(요 19:30)

군인들이 죽음을 앞당기려고 다른 희생자들의 다리를 꺾었습니다.

“(그러나) 예수께 이르러서는 이미 죽으신 것을 보고”(요 19:33), 확실히 하려고 그(예수님의) 옆구리를 찔렀습니다.

예수님께서는 우리에게 말씀하십니다.

“이를 내게서 빼앗는 자가 있는 것이 아니라 내가 스스로 버리노라.” (요10:18 )

그는 그 자신의 자유 의지로, 그 자신의 결정으로 그의 목숨을 버리셨습니다.

우리는 이는 예수님께서 자의로 죽으셨고, 우리를 위해서 죽임 당하기로 동의하셨음을 뜻하는 것으로 생각하고 싶을지도 모르겠습니다. 그러나 그것을 뜻하지는 않습니다.

이것은 예수님의 순종하심-마지막 속죄제로 드리셨습니다.

예수님의 죽으심은 희생제물이었습니다. 예수님 그분 자체로 희생제물이셨습니다. 예수님께서 단순히 우리를 위해서 죽으신 것이라면, 그분은 순수하고 강력한 희생제물일 것입니다. 그러나, 예수님께서는 또한 대제사장으로서 우리 죄에 대한 속죄를 행하셨습니다.

“대제사장마다 예물과 제사 드림을 위하여 세운 자니 그러므로 그도 무엇인가 드릴 것이 있어야 할지니라”(히 8:3)

하나님의 뜻을 따라, 예수님께서는 그 양을 위하여 자기생명을 바치는 사명을 받으셨습니다.

“이 뜻을 따라 예수 그리스도의 몸을 단번에 드리심으로 말미암아 우리가 거룩함을 얻었노라 제사장마다 매일 서서 섬기며 자주 같은 제사를 드리되 이 제사는 언제나 죄를 없게 하지 못하거니와 오직 그리스도는 죄를 위하여 한 영원한 제사를 드리시고 하나님 우편에 앉으사 그 후에 자기 원수들을 자기 발등상이 되게 하실 때까지 기다리시나니 그가 거룩하게 된 자들을 한 번의 제사로 영원히 온전하게 하셨느니라”(히 10:10-14)

그래서, 예수님께서는 희생제물로 우리를 위해 죽으셔야 했으며, 우리의 대제사장으로서 우리를 위해서 희생제물을 죽이셔야 했습니다.

이것은 예수님의 권위이십니다- 그분은 삶과 죽음을 지배하는 권세를 가지고 계십니다.

사도 요한은 우리에게 예수님께서 어떻게 사람을 죽음에서 살리실 수 있는지를 자세히 말하고 있습니다. 그리고 예수님께서는 눈을 들어 우러러 보시고 이르시되 “ 아버지여 내 말을 들으신 것을 감사하나이다 항상 내 말을 들으시는 줄을 내가 알았나이다 그러나 이 말씀 하옵는 것은 둘러선 무리를 위함이니 곧 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 그들로 믿게 하려 함이니이다.” 이 말씀을 하시고 큰 소리로 “나사로야 나오라” 부르시니 죽은 자가 수족을 베로 동인 채로 나오는데 그 얼굴은 수건에 싸였더라 예수께서 이르시되 풀어 놓아 다니게 하라 하시니라”(요 11:41-44)

이것은 예수님의 권위이십니다 – 그분은 그 자신의 생명을 버리고 다시 취하시는 권세를 가지고 계십니다.

그 분은 우리에게 이것을 아주 분명히 말씀하십니다. 그는 죽음을 명하고 죽으십니다. 게다가, 그 분은 생명을 명하고 죽음에서 다시 사십니다. 무에서 만물을 부르신 그 똑 같은 강력한 명령은 또한 그 자신의 생명을 끝내고, 죽음에서 그 분 자신을 부르시며 절대 다시 죽지 않습니다. 아마 우리도 우리 자신의 죽음을 준비하고 정리할 수 도 있겠습니다만, 예수님께서 하신 것과 다를 것입니다. 그 분은 육체적으로 죽는 것을 선택하셔야 했고, 그 다음엔 죽으셨습니다. 그 분은 다시 한번 더 사는 것을 선택하셨고, 부활하셨습니다.

이것은 이해 불가한 예수님의 권세이십니다.

예수님 안에는 소멸될 수 없는 하나님의 아들의 존재하심이 있었습니다. 그 분은 사형집행인이 건드릴 수 있는 분이 아니었습니다. 그 분은 인간의 삶을 버리셨고, 다시 취하셨습니다.

이것은 하나님의 아들의 신성한 권세입니다.

죽음과 삶은 그분의 명령에 달려 있습니다. 그 분은 그의 권세로 창조하실 수 있습니다. 그리고 그의 권세로 파괴할 수도 다시 새롭게 창조하실 수도 있습니다. 우리는 종종 하나님을 경이롭고 강력한 존재로 생각합니다. 그리고 사실 그분은 그렇습니다. 그러나 그의 능력은 그의 권세에 응답하는 것입니다. 그분께서 명하시는 것이라면 그 어떤 것이라도 이루어지는 것이지요.

예수님께서는 역사상 그 어떤 인물과 같지 않습니다.

그 어떤 다른 여타의 종교 창시자도 예수님께서 하신 것과 같은 방식으로 자신의 죽음을 명할 수 는 없습니다. 그 어떤 종교인, 과학자, 철학자, 또는 유명인이라도 죽음에서 다시 살아날 것을 명하고 다시 살아나는 부활을 가능케 할 수는 없습니다. 이것은 우리를 겸손케 해줍니다. 그리고 우리로 모든 강력한 사람들을 분명하고 현실을 직시하는 시선으로 보도록 해 줍니다. 이것은 우리로 우리의 한 목자, 그러한 위대한 능력을 갖고 계신 목자에게 돌아가게 해줍니다.

이것은 예수님께서 우리를 위해서 행하시는 강력한 구원입니다.

곧 우리가 원수 되었을 때에 그의 아들의 죽으심으로 말미암아 하나님과 화목하게 되었은즉 화목하게 된 자로서는 더욱 그의 살아나심으로 말미암아 구원을 받을 것이니라(롬 5:10).

예수님의 죽으심은 우리의 죄를 깨끗이 하십니다. 예수님의 (다시) 사심은 우리에게 그 분 안에서 새로운 생명을 주십니다.

이것은 예수님께서 우리를 위해서 행하시는 강력한 소망입니다.

그러나 이제 그리스도께서 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아나사 잠자는 자들의 첫 열매가 되셨도다 사망이 한 사람으로 말미암았으니 죽은 자의 부활도 한 사람으로 말미암는도다 (고전 15:20-21)

아담으로부터 우리에게 죽음이 들어왔고, 아담 때문에 우리 모두는 죽음을 경험합니다.

예수님으로부터 죽음에서 삶이 들어옵니다. 그리고 그 분 안에서 우리 모두는 부활을 경험할 것입니다.

이것은 우리로 하여금 다시 한번 예수님의 부활이 그리스도인 체험의 중심이 되어야 함을 상기시켜줍니다.

성육신(과 성탄절)은 경이롭고 필수불가결한 것이며 강력한 것입니다.

부활(과 부활절)은 예수님의 능력과 권세 그리고 사랑을 궁극적으로 가장 잘 보여주는 것입니다.

구원은 예수님의 죽으심만으로 성취되는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 또한 그 분의 부활이 필요합니다.

우리가 또한 하나님께 향한 새 삶을 가지고 있지 않다면 우리는 용서만으로 온전해지지는 않습니다.

그래서, 우리의 강력한 목자를 위한 삶을 사는 헌신을 새롭게 합시다!

죽음을 삶보다 더 약한 것으로 여깁시다. 예수님께서 우리에게 주신 새 삶을 이 썩어져 가는 삶보다 더 소중한 것으로 여깁니다. 사도바울을 따라 이렇게 말합시다;

또한 모든 것을 해로 여김은 내 주 그리스도 예수를 아는 지식이 가장 고상하기 때문이라 내가 그를 위하여 모든 것을 잃어버리고 배설물로 여김은 그리스도를 얻고 그 안에서 발견되려 함이니 내가 가진 의는 율법에서 난 것이 아니요 오직 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암은 것이니 곧 믿음으로 하나님께로부터 난 의라 내가 그리스도와 그 부활의 권능과 그 고난에 참여함을 알고자 하여 그의 죽으심을 본받아 어떻게 해서든지 죽은 자 가운데서 부활에 이르려 하노니 (빌 3:8-11)

삶의 작가이신 예수님 그리고 우리에게 부활이라는 너무나도 엄청난 능력을 주신 예수님을 바라봅시다.

우리에게 주신 소중한 그 분의 약속을 붙잡으십시오:

네가 죽도록 충성하라 그리하면 내가 생명의 관을 네게 주리라(계 2:10)
