* 제 목 : 선교적 교회 - 19. 경계를 넘다.(1)

지난 주 남북 정상 회담을 지켜보다가 지금으로부터 한...25년 전, 아내를 이국땅에서 잃어버릴 뻔 했던 일이 기억났습니다. 지금 생각해도 가슴이 철렁하는 기가 막힌 일입니다. 당시에 아내는 저희가 살던 한국의 크지 않은 도시에서 어린이 합창단을 만들어서 반주자로 섬기고 있었습니다. 합창단이 미주 지역 순회 연주회를 하기로 결정했습니다. 부모들을 포함해서 꽤 많은 인원이 미국 땅을 밟았습니다. 아내로서는 첫 해외여행이었습니다. 주로 미국 서부 지역에서 연주활동을 하고 관광도 했습니다. 하루는 샌디에고 남쪽에 있는 국경마을을 관광하게 되었습니다. 친하게 지내는 학부모 몇 사람과 수다를 떨면서 눈에 보이는 대로, 발길이 닿는 대로 다니고 있었는데... 갑자기 경찰이 다가왔습니다. 어... 영어가 아닌 언어를 사용하는 까무잡잡한 경찰이었습니다. 정신없이 여기저기 다니다보니 어느새 멕시코 땅을 밟고 있었습니다. 가족들과 합창단원들이 바로 지척에 있는데... 딱 한 발짝인데... 불법으로 국경을 넘어버린 것입니다.

문재인 대통령이 김정은 국무위원장을 만났습니다.(사진1) 한 50cm될까요? 남북한의 군사 경계선이 두 사람이 사이에 있었습니다. 두 손을 마주잡은 두 사람이 덕담을 나눕니다. 그리고 문재인 대통령이 김정은 위원장을 안내해서 남측으로 한걸음 발을 딛게 합니다. 북한의 지도자가 군사경계선을 넘어서는 첫발걸음, 역사적인 한걸음입니다. 남한 땅을 함께 밟고 서서 두 손을 다시 잡은 두 지도자... 문재인 대통령이 말합니다. “이렇게 쉬운데.... 나는 언제 북한 땅을 밟을 수 있을까요?” 그러자 김정은 위원장이 지금 함께 밟아보자고 말합니다. 두 사람이 손을 잡고 함께 군사 경계선을 넘습니다. 북한땅을 함께 밟습니다. 우리의 조국이 분단된 지 73년이 되었습니다. 휴전 선언을 한 지 65년이 되었습니다. 남북에 대한 합리적인 주권을 행사하지 못한 지 108년이 되었습니다. 남북의 지도자가 한 걸음, 큰 걸음을 디뎠습니다. 우리 조국의 오랜 아픔에 대해 하나님의 긍휼하심과 인도하심이 함께 하시기를 기도합니다. 감격적인 영상이어서 잠시 함께 보고 싶습니다.(영상1)

그런데 불법으로 국경을 넘어버린, 결혼 한 지 얼마 되지도 않았던 제 아내는 어떻게 되었을까요? 아주 간단하게 대답하면... 울고불고 난리를 쳤습니다. 관광 가이드가 와서 최선을 다해 설명했습니다. 몇 시간을 조사를 받았습니다. 아마도 보이지 않게 금전도 좀 오고 간 것 같습니다. 한참을 잡혀 있다가 겨우 풀려났습니다. 제 아내는 그 사건으로 아주 큰 교훈을 얻었습니다. “함부로 선을 넘어가면 큰 일 나는구나.....”

1. 경계(境界)가 있습니까?

한국 교회가 오랫동안 고민해온 단어가 있습니다. 바로 ‘세속화’(世俗化)라는 말입니다. 무슨 뜻인지는 잘 아실 겁니다. 세속, 즉 성스러운 교회가 세상처럼 되어간다는 말입니다. 주로 언제 사용할까요? 딱히 무슨 대단한 경계가 있지는 않습니다. 사람마다 각자의 경험과 견해를 따라 경건해보이지 않는 일에 대해 ‘세속적’이라는 판단을 할 뿐입니다. 최근에 한국 뿐만 아니라 미국의 복음주의권에서도 이 단어를 많이 사용했습니다. 영어로는 'secular'라는 단어입니다. 동성결혼, 차별금지법, 종교인과세... 등등의 주제에 대해 교회와 다른 판단이나 주장을 하면 어김없이 교회의 세속화를 외쳤고, 심지어 종북이라는 프레임까지 덧씌우기도 했습니다.

왜 이런 주장을 할까요? 그들의 주장의 배경이 되는 것이 바로 ‘이원론’(二元論)입니다. 이원론이란 간략하게 설명하면 이 세상을 하나님과 사탄의 대결구도로 보는 관점입니다. 영적인 것과 육적인 것을 구별합니다. 인간에게 일어나는 모든 악, 사고, 불행, 질병, 심지어 가난까지 모두 사탄 때문으로 봅니다. 세상과 교회, 신앙과 불신앙, 영적인 것과 육적인 것을 분리합니다. 그러다보니 거룩해 보이고, 신앙적으로 보이는 행동이나 말을 하는 것을 좋아합니다. 우리도 모르는 사이에 말과 행동을 그렇게 합니다. 제가 지난 주에 교단 선교위원회 회의에 참석하면서 살짝 기분이 안좋은... 좀 이상한 말을 들었습니다. 저와 함께 방을 쓰던 선배 목사님은 기도를 하면 크게 하고, 의논을 하면 거룩하게 말을 하는 분이었습니다. 큰 특징 중 하나가 말끝마다 ‘추여~~~’하는 버릇이었습니다. 서로 이야기를 하다가 뭔가 웃긴 이야기를 하면 깔깔깔 웃다가도 마지막에 웃음을 마무리할 때 ‘주여~~!’라고 말을 해야 정리가 되는 분이었습니다. 뭐.... 그러려니 할 수 있었습니다. 그런데 마지막에 결정타가 있었습니다. 숙소 화장실에 방음이 그리 잘되지 않아서 소리가 들렸습니다. 무슨 이야기인지 아시겠습니까? 그곳에서 큰 일을 해결하면서도 ‘추여~~~’, ‘음... 추여~~!’를 반복하고 있었습니다.

이원론은 실은 한국 교회를 가장 크게 병들게 하는 논리입니다. 첫째, 이 논리는 사탄을 하나님과 동등한 능력을 가진 존재로 놓습니다. 마치 천국은 하나님이, 이 세상은 사탄이 지배하는 것처럼 주장합니다. 둘째 성도와 교회를 위장되고 가장된 거룩함에 빠지게 합니다. ‘세상적’이라는 말을 듣지 않으려면 좀... 거룩한 척 해야 합니다. 셋째 성도와 교회가 서로를 판단하고 정죄합니다. 기준이 자기 안에 있는 경건함에 있기 때문에 그렇지 않은 사람들을 손가락질합니다. 넷째 따라서 어떤 성도와 교회는 이것으로 말미암아 교만해지고 스스로 만족합니다. 반대로 어떤 성도와 교회는 죄책감에서 벗어나지 못하고 자책합니다. 이원론은 우리가 가진 신앙으로 세상을 바라보는 ‘가장 쉽고 흔한 오해’입니다.

2. 그는 무엇을 했을까?

그런데 그럼에도 불구하고 뭔가 찝찝하시지요? “영과 육, 세상 아니면 교회, 하나님 아니면 사탄... 맞는 거 아닌가....?”라고 생각하실 수 있습니다. 혹시 혼란스러운 분이 있으시다면 오늘 본문의 요셉을 한번 보시기 바랍니다. 그는 지금 어디에 있습니까? 어떤 신분으로 있습니까? 뭐하고 있습니까? 그는 애굽에서 총리대신의 일을 하고 있습니다. 자, 그의 삶은 세속적입니까? 거룩합니까? 그는 애굽의 옷을 입고 애굽말을 하며 애굽 사람들을 다스리면서 애굽의 왕의 녹을 먹으며 애굽의 왕을 섬깁니다. 그는 예배했을까요? 예, 아마도 그랬을 겁니다. 그는 기도했을까요? 예, 아마도 그랬을 겁니다. 그렇다면 지극히 종교적인 국가였던 애굽에서 그의 신앙과 삶은 어떻게 조화될 수 있었을까요? 그는 그곳에서도 복음을 전하며 그가 만나는 모든 다른 사람들에게 하나님을 믿는 믿음에 대해서 이야기했을까요? 그들을 ‘복음화’했을까요?

그에게는 성경이 부여한 두 가지 큰 역사적 사명이 있습니다. 하나는 출애굽과 관련이 있습니다. 형들은 그에게 악을 행하여 애굽의 노예로 팔아넘깁니다. 하지만 그는 하나님께서 그에게 꿈으로 계시한대로 모든 사람들의 섬김을 받는 지위에 올라섭니다. 물론 높은 지위에 올라서는 것이 그의 사명은 아닙니다. 그로 인해 야곱의 70인의 가족들은 애굽으로 들어가게 되고, 하나님은 이스라엘을 애굽에서 200만의 나라로 만드셔서 약속의 땅 가나안으로 인도하십니다. 또 다른 사명 하나는 예수님과 관련이 있습니다. 그는 구약의 사람들 중에서 가장 예수님의 잘 예표하고 있습니다. 세상은 악을 행하지만 예수님은 세상에 대해 오직 하나님의 뜻을 따라 선을 행하십니다. 십자가를 지셔서 구원을 이루십니다. 요셉의 가족들을 용서하고 구원하는 삶은 예수님의 십자가 사역과 닮았습니다.

그런데 여러분, 요셉이 지금 하고 있는 일은 무엇입니까? 그는 근동 지방에 찾아온 7년의 풍년을 통해서 다가올 7년의 흉년을 준비했습니다. 잘 준비했기 때문에 7년의 흉년 동안 애굽은 더욱 큰 나라가 됩니다. 수많은 나라들이 식량 때문에 애굽에 굴복했습니다. 하나님의 사람 요셉이 우상을 섬기는 애굽을 부강하게 했습니다. 그들이 부강해졌다고 해서 하나님을 섬기는 나라가 된 것이 아닙니다. 그들은 여전히 그들의 신을 섬깁니다. 자, 그렇다면 요셉은 세속화된 것일까요? 그가 하나님의 사람이요, 그 시대에 대한 역사적 사명을 받은 사람이라면 애굽을 복음화하는 일에 헌신해야 하지 않을까요? 생명을 잃을지라도 바로에게 하나님을 전하고 우상을 섬기는 애굽을 부강하게 만드는 일을 거절했어야 하는 것 아닐까요?

3. 세상 속에 있는 교회, 세상을 품은 교회

예수님은 교회를 세상의 빛이라고 말씀하십니다. 소금이라고도 표현하셨습니다. 어둠은 밝혀야 하고, 소금은 맛을 내야 합니다. 밝힐 수 있는 어둠이 존재해야 하고, 맛을 낼 수 있는 재료 또한 필요합니다. 따라서 교회는 세상 속에 존재합니다.

여기서 구별해야 할 것이 있습니다. ‘교회가 세상 속에 존재한다는 것’과 ‘교회가 세상에 속했다는 것’은 다른 의미입니다. 세상 속에 있는 교회는 세상과 구별되어야 하고, 세상을 변화시켜야 합니다. 마치 주한 미국 대사관이 미국 땅에 있지만 한국 정부의 통치를 받고 미국에서 필요한 일을 하는 것처럼, 세상 속에 있는 교회는 세상에 있지만 하나님께 속하였고 세상에서 필요한 사명을 감당합니다. 세상 속에 있지만 오히려 세상을 사랑과 복음으로 품는 교회가 되어야 하는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 교회는 세상의 주권이 오직 하나님께만 있음을 고백하기 때문입니다. “우주와 그 가운데 있는 만유를 지으신 신께서는 천지의 주재시니”(행 17:24)라고 했습니다. 천지의 주제, 만유의 창조주는 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 세상 속에 사는 우리를 부르셔서 구별하시고 소명을 주십니다. “모든 일을 그 마음의 원대로 역사하시는 자의 뜻을 따라 우리가 예정을 입어 그 안에서 기업이 되었으니” (엡 1:11) 세상 속에서 하나님의 기업이 되어 그 뜻이 이루어지는 삶에 헌신하는 것입니다.

다시 요셉을 보십시오. 그는 아버지의 집에 있을 때도, 보디발의 집에 노예로 살 때에도, 감옥에서 억울한 죄수로 살 때에도, 그리고 애굽의 총리로 살 때에도 세상에 존재하는 교회의 목적을 실현하며 삽니다. 아버지 야곱이 하나님의 뜻대로 살지 못할 때에도 그는 하나님이 주시는 꿈을 꾸는 사람이었습니다. 보디발의 집에 노예로 팔려갔지만 그는 하나님의 사람으로 살아갑니다. “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로 그가 형통한 자가 되어 그의 주인 애굽 사람의 집에 있으니 그의 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께 하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통하게 하심을 보았더라 요셉이 그의 주인에게 은혜를 입어 섬기매 그가 요셉을 가정 총무로 삼고 자기의 소유를 다 그의 손에 위탁하니 그가 요셉에게 자기의 집과 그의 모든 소유물을 주관하게 한 때부터 여호와께서 요셉을 위하여 그 애굽 사람의 집에 복을 내리시므로 여호와의 복이 그의 집과 밭에 있는 모든 소유에 미친지라”(창 39:2-5) 보디발의 집에서 나타난 하나님의 사람으로서의 그의 정체성은 감옥에서도, 바로의 총리가 되었을 때도, 그리고 용서를 비는 형들 앞에서도 그대로 나타납니다. 그는 세상 저 먼 곳에 펼쳐놓은 하나님의 전선입니다. 39장 5절을 다시 보십시오. “여호와께서 요셉을 위하여 그 애굽 사람의 집에 복을 내리시므로 여호와의 복이 그의 집과 밭에 있는 모든 소유에 미친지라” 요셉이 사는 곳이 바로 하나님의 전선이 되고, 그를 통해 하나님의 영광이 증거됩니다. 그는 세상을 품은 성도가 되고, 그의 삶은 세상 속의 교회가 됩니다.

4. 경계를 넘다.

마지막으로 아주 중요한 질문을 하나 드릴까 합니다. 요셉 말이지요.... 그는 애굽으로 어쩌다 팔려 간 것일까요? 보내심을 받은 것일까요? 네, 우리가 성경에 목적하는 관점에서 보면 요셉은 하나님의 온전하신 섭리 가운데 보내심을 받았습니다. 그는 분명히 하나님께서 자신을 보내셨다고 고백합니다. 그렇다면 보내심을 받은 그는 애굽에서 하나님의 사람으로, 하나님이 세우신 교회로 사는 일에 성공했을까요? 예, 그렇습니다. 그가 전도하고 믿으라고 하고... 했기 때문에 성공한 것은 아닙니다. 그는 그곳에서도 하나님의 영광을 위해 살았고, 하나님이 함께 하시는 증거를 보이면서 살았습니다. 그 결과 하나님의 은혜와 복이 그가 가는 모든 곳에 나타났습니다. 심지어 한 나라가 요셉으로 말미암아 부강해지고, 그 나라 주변에 있는 모든 나라와 백성들이 요셉을 통해 하나님의 은혜를 경험합니다. 그는 애굽에 세운 교회였습니다.

자, 이제 두 번째 중요한 질문입니다. 그렇다면 우리는, 여러분과 저는 세상에 어쩌다보니 태어났습니까? 이 세상에 보내심을 받았습니까? 아니... 좀 더 구체적으로 질문합시다. 우리는 미국 북동부 펜실바니아에 어쩌다보니 팔려왔습니까? 하나님이 목적하신 바가 있어서 보내심을 받은 것입니까? 하나님께서 우리의 삶에, 가정에, 교회에 선하신 목적을 두셨다는 사실에 동의하십니까? 비록 요셉이 어려서 어머니를 잃고 외롭게 살 때에도, 비참하게 팔려가서 노예로 살 때에도, 억울한 종살이를 할 때에도, 애굽의 총리가 되어서 나라를 다스릴 때에도, 형들 앞에 설 때에도 그의 모든 삶에서 하나님의 동행하심과 목적하신이 이루어졌던 것처럼.... 때로 우리의 삶이 고난과 역경 가운데 있을 때에도, 질병과 고난 가운데 흔들릴 때에도, 세상의 거짓과 불의에 고통 당할 때에도 우리의 삶은 하나님이 허락하신 목적 가운데 있음을 믿으십니까? 그렇다면 우리의 삶에는 경계가 없습니다. 세상과 교회의 경계는 무의미합니다. 우리가 사는 모든 곳이 세상 속에서 세상을 품은 교회의 현장입니다. 우리들 모두가 각자 자기 삶의 목회자입니다. 우리들이 만나는 모든 사람을 하나님의 뜻과 말씀으로 섬기며, 우리들로 말미암아 하늘의 은혜와 복이 그들에게 증거될 것입니다. 세상은 그들과 하나님의 나라 사이에 경계를 만들고 이만큼이 자신들의 영역이라 주장하고 싶어하지만, 하나님은 그들의 영역을 인정하지 않으십니다. 하나님은 온 우주만물의 하나님이시오, 모든 시간의 하나님이십니다. 여러분과 저를 세상에 보내셔서 우리를 통해 하나님의 주권을 세상 속에 실현하십니다. 이미 교회로 살아가는 우리 성도들에게 세상과 하나님의 나라의 경계는 없습니다. 우리의 가정, 우리의 직장, 우리가 만나고 일하고 즐기는 모든 곳이 하나님의 교회이기 때문입니다. 세상 속에서 세상을 품는 교회가 되어 하나님의 영광에 헌신하는 아름다운 초대교회와 성도들이 되시기를 축복합니다.

* 제 목 : Missional Church - 19. To Cross the Border(1)

While I watched the inter-Korean summit last week, it reminded me of the episode that I almost lost my wife in foreign country around 25 yrs ago. Even though thinking about this, I still have a sinking feeling. At that time she was serving a children’s choir as an accompanist in the small city where we had lived. The choir decided to have concerts in America. Many people including their parents came to America. That was her first trip abroad. The schedule of performances and sightseeing was usually in western area of America. One day we went sightseeing a border town of southern San Diego. We had been going where our feet take us with some close parents while talking. Suddenly police came up to us. He was the police who spoke the different language, not English. We were in the region of Mexico! My family and choir members were right there, just in one foot distance. We crossed the border illegally.

President Moon Jae-In met supreme leader of North Korea Kim Jong-un.(사진1) Is the distance around 50cm? There is the military border of Koreas between them. They are holding hands together and sharing words of blessing. And then president Moon guides chairman Kim to enter the South’s territory. It was the first and historic time that a North leader crossed the military border. The two leader who stand in the South’s territory and hold hands together. President Moon says, “It is easy like this... When can I step into the North’s territory?” So chairman Kim Jong-un suggests to do it right now together. They hold hands together and cross the military border. They stand up in the North’s together. Korea has been divided for 73 yrs. It’s been declared the cease-fire for 65 yrs. It’s been blocked sovereignty for 108 yrs. The South and North leaders took a big step. I pray God’s compassion and guidance is on our country’s suffering. By the way, what happened to my young wife who had crossed the border? In brief, she cried out in tears. The tour guide came and tried best to explain. She was under investigation several hours. After she had been detained long time, she could be released. She learned a great lesson in the incident. “It makes me in trouble to cross the border carelessly.”

1. Is there a border?

There is a word that Korean churches have been agonized for a long time. It is “secularization.” You know the meaning of this word well. Secularize, in othr word the saint church becomes secular like world. When is it used? There is no certain boundary. They just decide something seemed ungodly as ‘secular’ according to their experiences and point views. Recently it is used not only in Korean church but also in American Evangelical church. Homosexual marriage, prohibition on discrimination, imposing a tax on religious person. About these topics whenever there is other decision or opinion, they shout constantly the secularization of church, more over frame the follower of North Korea, too.

Why do they insist? The background of their insistence is ‘dualism.’ In short, dualism is the point view that the world is the confrontation between God and satan. They differentiate between the spritual and the physical. They think all kind of bad things like evil, accident, misfortune, disease, and even poverty happen on human being because of satan. So they like words or actions that seem to be holy and religious. I participated in the church mission committee meeting and heard something weird. A pastor whom I shared the room with is a kind of man who pray loudly in prayer and say something religious during discussion. He has a habit of ending words with ‘Lord~~~.’ He is supposed to end the conversation or giggling with ‘Lord~~.’ It was just okay, but there was a final blow. I could hear the sound from the bathroom because of the poor insulated wall. Can you guess what it was? He repeated the word, ‘Lord~~’ while he was doing in the bathroom.

Dualism is the logic that makes Korean church weak. First, It makes satan the equality with God. They insist as if God governs heaven, and satan does this world. Second, it makes the believes and the church disguised and simulated holiness. If you don’t like to hear the word ‘worldly’, you should pretend to be holy. Third, the believers and church judge and condemn each other. Because the standard is the godliness within themselves, they easily point the finger at different people with them. Fourth, certain believers and church can’t escape from the guilty feeling and blame themselves. Dualism is the most likely and common misunderstanding that we can faithfully see the world with.

2. What did he do?

Is there something not clear? You may think that “Spirit and body, world or church, God or satan... Is it right? If there is someone who is not still clear, you should take a look Joseph in today’s passages. Where is he now? What is his status? What is he doing? He is serving as prime minister in Egypt. Is his life secular? Or holy? He is wearing Egyptian clothing, speaking Egyptian language, governing the Egytian people, and serving Pharaoh, the Egyptian king. Did he worship? Yes, he might. Did he pray? Yes, he might. So how was it possible that his faith and life were in harmony in Egyt, the religious country. Could he preach the gospel and talk about the faith of God? Did he evangelize them?

There were two big historical missions that the Bible gave him. One is related to the exodus from Egypt. His brothers did evil to him and sold him to be the slave of Egyptian people. But he came up to the position where he was served by all people as God’s revelation through his dream. Going up to the top position is not his mission, of course. Through him, Jacob and his 70 family members could go into the Egypt, and God made them the country of 2 million people and guided them into Canaan, the Promised Land. The other mission is related to Jesus. He is the best example of Jesus in Old Testament. The world is doing evil, but Jesus is doing good according to the God’s will toward the world. He bears his cross and accomplish the salvation. Joseph’s forgiveness and salvation of his family resemble Jesus’ mission of Cross.

By the way, what is Joseph doing now? He prepared the seven years of famine through the seven years of great abundance. Due to the well preparation, Egypt became the bigger country during the seven years of famine. Many country submitted to Egypt because of foods. Joseph, the man of God made Egypt who worshiped idols stronger. If they became stronger and bigger, it doesn’t mean that they are the country that worship God. They are still worshiping their own gods. If so, does Joseph become secular? If he is the man of God, and the person who received the historical mission in his era, should he be dedicated to evangelize Egypt? Even though he lost his life, should he refuse the position where he helped Egypt stronger?

3. The church in the world, the church embracing the world

Jesus says that church is the light of the world and the salt. Light should shine on the darkness and salt should have its saltness. There should be the darkness where the light can shine on and the ingredient that the salt can make delicious. Thus church exists in the world.

Here we have to distinguish. ‘For church to exist in the world’ and ‘For church to belong to the world’ are different. The church in the world need to differentiate from the world and change the world. As if the embassy of the Korea in USA is located in America and doing something needed here, but governed by Korea, the church in the world is located in this world, but belong to God, and doing missions here in this world. Even though it is in the world, but it has to be embracing the world with love and gospel. It’s because the church confess that the sovereignty of the world is only to God. “우주와 그 가운데 있는 만유를 지으신 신께서는 천지의 주재시니”(행 17:24) “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.” (Acts 17:24) The Lord of heaven and earth, the Creator of the world and everything in it is God. God calls, makes distinction, and gives us who live in this world. “모든 일을 그 마음의 원대로 역사하시는 자의 뜻을 따라 우리가 예정을 입어 그 안에서 기업이 되었으니” (엡 1:11) “In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will” (Eph 1:11) We become the inheritance of God and be dedicated to God’s will.

Let’s go back to Joseph. He has realized the purpose of church that exist in the world when he was in his father’s home, and when he was in slavery in Potiphar’s house, and when he was in jail, and when he was serving as prime minister. Even though Jacob, his father couldn’t live with God’s will, he was the person who dreamed the dream from God. “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로 그가 형통한 자가 되어 그의 주인 애굽 사람의 집에 있으니 그의 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께 하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통하게 하심을 보았더라 요셉이 그의 주인에게 은혜를 입어 섬기매 그가 요셉을 가정 총무로 삼고 자기의 소유를 다 그의 손에 위탁하니 그가 요셉에게 자기의 집과 그의 모든 소유물을 주관하게 한 때부터 여호와께서 요셉을 위하여 그 애굽 사람의 집에 복을 내리시므로 여호와의 복이 그의 집과 밭에 있는 모든 소유에 미친지라”(창 39:2-5) “The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field”(Gen 39:2-5) His identity of God’s man in Potiphar’s house shows up in prison, and when he was in charge of Egypt, and in front of his brothers who asks his forgiveness. He is the front line where God puts far from the world. Let’s look at Gen 39:5 again. “여호와께서 요셉을 위하여 그 애굽 사람의 집에 복을 내리시므로 여호와의 복이 그의 집과 밭에 있는 모든 소유에 미친지라” “From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field” (Gen39:5) Where Joseph lives is God’s front line, and through him the glory of God is witnessed. He becomes the believer who is embracing the world, and his life becomes the church in the world.

4. To Cross the border

Last, I ask you a very important question. Joseph. How come he was sold into Egypt? Was he sent? Yes, in the viewpoint of purpose in the Bible, he was sent in God’s complete providence. He certainly confessed that God had sent himself. If so, did he succeed to live as the man of God and the church in Egypt? Yes, he did. It was not his preaching the gospel. He lived his life for the glory of God and witnessed God’s immanuel. As a result, God’s grace and blessing come up wherever he goes. Even a country becomes stronger through Joseph, and all nation and people around the country experience the grace of God through Joseph. He was the church built in Egypt.

Now, Second question. If so, you and I, how come we are born in this world? Are we sent? More detail. How come we were sold into PA, northern American? Was it sent for God’s purpose? Do you agree that God has a good purpose for our life, household, and church? Like Joseph’s case - when he lost his mother and was lone, when he was sold and lived as slave, when he was in prison, when he was in charge of Egypt, and when he was in front of his brothers, God was with him and His purpose accomplished. Do you believe that our lives are in the middle of God’s purpose even when we are in trouble and suffering, when we are unstable in disease and hardship, and when we are in pain because of lie and injustice of the world? If so, there is no border in our lives. The border between the world and the church is meaningless. Everywhere we live in is the place where the church is embracing the world. Each of us is the pastor of our lives. We can serve everyone whom we meet with God’s will and words, and witness the grace and blessing from heaven through us. The world wants to make a border between them and kingdom of God, and to insist their territory, but God doesn’t allow their territory. God is the Lord of the world and everything in it. He is the God of every time. He sent you and me into the world and realizes His sovereignty through us. To the believers who already lives as church there is no border between the world and the kingdom of God. It’s because our house, workplace, and everywhere we meet, work and enjoy are God’s church.
