There is a korean novel named ‘A Day in the Life of Mr. Gubo, Novelist.’ A korean writer named Park, Tae-Won wrote a novel about his daily life in 1930’s. His pen name was Gubo, and the age of the main character in the novel was same as his. The story is simple. Mr. Gubo who came back after completing a study in Japan lives his simple life everyday. Today he goes to Jongno where the intellectuals gathered at leaving behind his mother’s nagging about his marriage. He gets on the train and meets his ex-girlfriend, and worries about his health, and thinks about being rich while looking at a bank, and says long and various stories to attract female workers in the coffee shop, and envies the affectionate couple. On the way home he thinks of his mother who is waiting for himself. ‘Ah~ Right. I should get married soon.’ His day ends like that.

This novel created a great sensation in 1930’s Joseon(korean) literary world. Why was this novel that was not much long and funny, and fancy important in korean literary world? The reason is that Mr. Gubo precisely shows the realistic intellectuals at that time.

He, the novelist was Park, Tae-Won, Gubo and came back after completing a study in Japan. However, there is nothing that he can do but showing off his knowledge. He can do judge, brag, and debate with his abundant knowledge, but they are all useless for contributing to his neighbors and country – changing his neighbor’s lives and helping independence of his lost homeland. He reflects his day. The only thing that he does is wandering around and saying the nonproductive and unnecessary words. He left behind his mother’s worries when he was out, and he will encounter her worries again on the way home. An intellectual should be responsible for his society and history, and present the purpose and direction for his own and neighbors’ lives, but he can’t find out anything in his life. He repeats his daily life and falls into despair.

I’m going to give a series of sermons named ‘A Day of Mr./Ms. Ordinary, Christian’ next 10 weeks or more. Concretely, about more detailed and concrete life like ‘Character, Family, Business, Friendship of Mr./Ms. Ordinary, Christian’ etc. As you know, ‘Mr./Ms. Ordinary, Christian’ means all of us. I’m trying to examine how our daily lives live as the people of God and as church.

1. 악마의 승리

However, interestingly there is a similar story in ‘The Screwtape Letters’ by C. S. Lewis. I can’t remember the story exactly, but the plot of a story is this. There is an old gentleman who retired and spends his time on going to the library and reading books. That day he goes into the library. And the demon who is in charge of him goes in, too. The demon has a mission to make the old gentleman be far away from God. The old man chooses the good book related to faith. The demon leaves him. The old man reads the book. The demon doesn’t interrupt him. But, the old man gains spiritual enlightenment through the book. The demon gets nervous a little bit. The old man thinks over. What is God’s will for his life? What does God want me to do through this words? When he starts to think over this questions, the demon knocks his mind. The demon puts a simple idea in his mind. ‘Uh.. It’s already lunch time. So I’m hungry. What do I eat for lunch?’

After he orders food at the restaurant, he remembers the book that he read before? ‘Ah! Right! So what can I do?’ At that time the demon puts the newspaper in front of him. He reads the newspaper and eats lunch. His friends come into the restaurant. He talks about the incidents in the newspaper with them. He has a great time with them until late afternoon. The clock tells the time to go home. On the way home... he remember the book that he read before. ‘What did the book say?’ At that time the demon whispers in his mind. ‘My memory is blurred. I’d read the book again and think it over tomorrow.’

The old gentleman holds the newspaper filled with the stories in the world that he read before and is waiting for the bus home. He went back his home sitting on the chair and reading the newspaper in the bus as usual. The demon is waving his hand toward the bus and smiling contently, and says, “Ha ha ha Today I win again.”

2. 이렇게 살면 어떤가? vs. 이렇게 살아도 좋은가?

I want to tell you one more story. Around 17-8 years ago, after completing one course during studying in U.S. I had an opportunity to give a sermon in Samcheonpo church. I shared the story of the old gentleman from the book by C. S. Lewis with the parable of sower in the book of Matthew ch. 13. After the service, an elder named Lee, Jung-Gi cried and came to me. He was the person who cared for and loved me a lot when I was a preacher(AKA Jeondosa) in the church. Without him maybe I couldn’t keep working on the ministry as a Jeondosa. He was an open- minded person and knew how to encourage young ministers. He held my hand and said, “Pastor Lee, I am the old man. I live my life exactly like him.”

The Elder Lee retired his teaching job earlier because of his bad health condition. His life cycle focused on church. Early in the morning he wakes up, and walks to church, and does dawn prayer. After 1-2 hours prayer, on the way home he says hellos to many people. At home he eats breakfast, reads the newspaper in the morning, and talks over the phone with many people. Afternoon he eats lunch, and reads books or bible, and does church works or visits. He has dinner, and watches TV and goes to bed early evening. This life cycle has repeated more than 10 years.

What’s wrong? The old gentleman, The Elder Lee... Did they do something evil? Did they steal something? Did they tell lies? Just waking up, praying, eating meals, reading books, meeting people, exercising, and watching TV, sleeping and waking up again... Didn’t they do something bad or commit sins at all? They might have worked hard when they were young, and they goes to church Sunday... What’s wrong with them? How are they like living this way?

By the way, why did C.S. Lewis say that Satan wins again regarding a day of the old gentleman? Why did the Elder Lee cry and beat his breast? Is it okay for us to live this way?

3. 가치와 사명

Today’s scripture says the creation of mankind. What are the ingredients of creating them? Ch.2 v.7 says that God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. If so, can every dust can be formed into a man? No. The story of creation in Ch.1 tells us that there is the more important and essential ingredient. That’s the image of God. The fact that mankind was created in the image of God- it determines the value of mankind. Please remember this. A Man has his value center, the image of God. Even though they are inadequate and weak, they should not be despised, and the human rights should not be annihilated, and they should be respected in every condition because there is the most important value, the image of God in everyone.

And there is one important factor that this value determines in mankind. It is a mission. Theologists call Genesis Ch.1 v.27-28 ‘cultural mandate, creation mandate.’ The man who was created in the image of God has a precious mission that he/she lives as God’s will and lets all other things live as God’s will. To subdue the earth and rule over them is not to privatize them and not to destroy them. Mankind should serve and rule over them according to God’s will. When a man fulfills the mission that God gives as his/her own life, the kingdom of God and God’s will come true.

You should remember two words through today’s passages. ‘Value’ and ‘Mission’ A man has the value, ‘the image of God,’ that God allows. A man receives the mission that he rules over the world with the glory of God according to God’s will. There is a person who realized the ‘value and mission’ best in history of mankind. He is Jesus Christ who was the image of God, and in very nature God, and sacrificed himself to the altar, and ruled over the world according to God’s will. The divine value and mission that God allows a man are totally realized through Jesus Christ.

4. 성도 보통씨가 사는 법

Actually, the Elder Lee passed away last year. I don’t know how his life had been changed since the sermon. But I hope that it had worked in his repeated everyday life to make any small changes and he is resting in peace and in Arms of God. But. there is a problem. If the old gentleman from the book of C.S. Lewis and the Elder Lee live their lives without any changes, Still it repeats, the years flow away, and it is getting close to see God even If we don’ want to. If we live the repeated lives without thinking over where our lives flow away and what we live for, or asking them, or answering them, or proving our lives to them... is it okay for us to live this way? Not for the old gentleman from England or the Elder Lee who you never met... For all of us who worship here and right now... Is it okay for us to live this way as usual?

Mankind is different from all other creatures. All plants sow, grow, blossom, yield fruits, and die. All animals do the same. They all live and disappear according to their own nature and to the stream of time. However, a man is different. Look at the v. 29-30. God gave every plant and animal for foods. All plants and animals that don’t have the value and mission exist only for a man who lives for the value and mission that God allows. By the way, a man is different. There is the bright and beautiful value, the image of God, in him. We have to live value-centered lives. We have to live value-shined lives. We have to do like these - God is in me. My life has to reveal God. I have to live with the mission. I have to have the purpose and direction of my life. I have to answer what I live for and where my life goes.

The life drifting away on the stream of time is like a tree in front our house and an animal that might become food for us. The life with the value and the mission, it is a rigorous question that God, our Creator asks us.

Today Mr./Ms. Ordinary, Christian opens his/her eyes in the morning. Another day has begun. First of all, I ask myself about the value that moves myself and the reason why I live. God is in me, and today I will meet God and witness Him and serve the kingdom of God. Today the image of God shines brightly in me, and the way that I will walk is clear. Mr./Ms. Ordinary, Christian goes to bed. He/She lives his/her life to the full. Today a world met God through me. I proved how to live according to God’s will through my life. The value, the image of God, and the mission, the kingdom of God have proved. A smile at the corner’s of the mouth. He/She falls asleep giving thanks to God. Mr./Ms. Ordinary, Christian wins today.

‘소설가 구보씨의 하루’라는 소설이 있습니다. 1930년대 일제 강점기에 박태원이라는 소설가가 자신의 일상을 소설로 만들었습니다. 그의 호구 ‘구보’(仇甫)이며, 소설에 등장하는 주인공의 구보씨의 나이도 실제 그의 나이와 같습니다. 소설의 내용은 단순합니다. 일본에서 공부를 하고 돌아온 소설가 구보씨는 매일매일 무료한 일상을 살아갑니다. 오늘도 구보씨는 결혼을 하지 않는다고 걱정하는 어머니의 잔소리를 뒤로하고 당시 지식인들이 모이던 종로로 갑니다. 전철을 타고, 옛애인을 만나고, 건강을 걱정하고, 은행을 보면서 돈이 좀 많았으면... 생각을 하고, 다방에 들어서 여종업원의 마음을 사기 위해 온갖 사설을 늘어놓고, 다정한 연인들을 보면서 질투하기도 합니다. 집으로 돌아가는 길에 구보씨는 집에서 자신을 기다리는 어머니를 생각합니다. 아... 그렇지... 빨리 결혼을 해야지.... 그의 하루를 그렇게 끝났습니다.

이 소설은 1930년에 조선 문단에 큰 반향을 일으켰습니다. 별로 길지도 않고 재미도 없고 문장이 화려하지도 않은 이 소설이 한국 문학사의 한 획을 긋는 중요한 위치를 차지인 이유가 무엇일까요? 그것은 바로 이 소설의 주인공 구보씨가 당시 몰락한 왕조 조선의 지식인들의 모습을 정확하고 사실적으로 보여주고 있기 때문입니다.

소설에서 말하는 대로 소설가인 그는, 박태원이자 구보는 일본 유학을 마치고 조선으로 돌아왔습니다. 그런데 딱히 자신의 지식을 뽐내는 것 외에는 할 수 있는 일이 없습니다. 배운 것은 많아서 비판을 할 수도 있고, 자랑을 할 수도 있고, 논쟁을 할 수도 있는데.... 정작 자신의 지식은 이웃의 삶을 바꾸고 잃어버린 조국의 역사를 되찾는 일에는 아무런 쓸모가 없습니다. 그가 자신의 하루를 돌아봅니다. 자신이 한 일이라고는 이리저리 다니며 전혀 생산적이지도, 필요하지도 않은 말들을 늘어놓은 것 밖에는 없습니다. 집에서 나올 때 어머니의 걱정을 뒤로하고 나왔고, 집으로 돌아가면 다시 어머니의 걱정을 만날 것입니다. 한 시대의 지식인이라면 자신이 속한 사회와 역사에 대한 책임과 의무가 있을 것인데... 자신과 이웃의 삶이 어떤 방향과 목적으로 가지고 살아야 하는지를 제시해야 할텐데... 그는 자신의 삶의 어느 부분에서도 그것을 발견하지 못합니다. 그의 일상은 하루하루 반복되고 있고, 삶에 대한 그의 절망은 깊어갑니다.

1. 악마의 승리

그런데 재미있게도 C.S Lewis의 저서 ‘악마의 편지’에 ‘소설가 구보씨의 하루’와 비슷한 이야기가 등장합니다. 정확하게 내용이 기억나지는 않습니다만... 이야기의 전개는 이렇습니다. 은퇴를 하고 매일 도서관에 가서 책 읽는 일로 소일하는 한 노신사가 있습니다. 그 날도 그는 도서관에 들어갑니다. 그리고 그를 담당한 악마가 함께 들어갑니다. 악마는 노신사를 하나님으로부터 멀어지도록 만드는 사명을 가지고 있습니다. 노신사가 신앙과 관련한 좋은 책을 선택합니다. 악마는 내버려둡니다. 노신사가 그 책을 읽습니다. 악마는 방해하지 않습니다. 그런데 그 노신사가 책을 통해서 영적인 깨달음을 얻습니다. 악마는 약간 긴장합니다. 노신사가 고민합니다. 자기 삶을 향한 하나님의 뜻이 뭘까...? 하나님은 이 말씀을 통해서 내게 무엇을 원하시는가....? 이런 고민을 시작할 때 악마는 노신사의 마음의 문을 두드립니다. 악마는 그의 마음에 아주 간단한 생각 하나를 넣어줍니다.

‘어... 벌써 점심시간이잖아... 그러고 보니 출출하네... 뭘 먹을까...?’

매일 가는 식당에서 음식을 주문하고 신사는 아까 읽던 책을 기억했습니다.

‘아... 그래... 그래서 어떻게 하면 될까....?’

그때 악마는 노신사의 눈앞에 그날 신문을 놓아둡니다. 노신사는 생각을 멈추고 신문을 읽으며 점심 식사를 합니다. 노신사의 친구들이 식당에 들어옵니다. 노신사는 그들을 만나고 신문에 나온 사건들에 대해 이야기합니다. 늦은 오후까지 친구들과 즐거운 시간을 보냅니다. 시계를 보니 집으로 갈 시간입니다. 집으로 가는 길.... 노신사는 읽었던 책을 기억합니다.

‘책에서 뭐라고 했더라....?’

그때 악마는 그의 마음에 다시 속삭입니다.

‘기억이 가물거리잖아... 내일 다시 책 읽으면서 생각하지 뭐!’

노신사는 아까 읽던, 세상 이야기로 가득한 신문을 들고 집으로 가는 버스를 기다립니다. 버스 의자에 앉아서 신문을 읽으며 역시 ‘늘 하던 것처럼 아무 일 없이’ 집으로 돌아갔습니다. 악마는 그 버스를 향해 손을 흔들며 보내면서 회심의 미소를 짓습니다. 그리고 말합니다.

“하하하... 오늘도 내가 이겼군..”

2. 이렇게 살면 어떤가? vs. 이렇게 살아도 좋은가?

이야기를 하나 더 해드릴까 합니다. 지금으로부터 17-8년 전, 미국으로 유학을 왔다가 2년 만에 한 과정을 마치고 저의 고향 교회라고 할 수 있는 삼천포 교회에서 말씀을 전할 기회가 있었습니다. 마태복음 13장의 마음밭에 대한 말씀을 전하면서 조금 전에 나눈 C.S. Lewis의 노신사 이야기를 했습니다. 예배를 마쳤는데, 한 장로님이 눈물을 흘리면서 다가왔습니다. 이정기 장로님이라는 분입니다. 제가 그 교회에서 전도사를 할 때 많이 아끼고 사랑해주신 분이었습니다. 아마 그 장로님이 아니었으면 제가 그 교회에서 전도사로서 사역을 계속하지 못했을 겁니다. 생각이 많이 열린 분이었고, 젊은 교역자를 키울 줄 아는 분이었습니다. 그 분이 “이목사님....”하고는 제 손을 잡았습니다. 그리고는 말씀하시기를 “내가 그 노신사다... 내가.... 내가 꼭 그렇게 산다...”말씀하셨습니다.

이장로님은 건강이 좋지 않아서 교사직을 일찍 은퇴했습니다. 삶의 모든 중심이 교회에 맞춰져 있었습니다. 새벽 이른 시간에 일어나 30분 걸어서 새벽기도를 갑니다. 1-2시간 기도를 하고, 돌아가는 길에 좁은 삼천포 도시에 수많은 사람들과 인사를 합니다. 집으로 돌아가면 아침 식사를 하고, 오전에는 신문을 보고, 여기 저기 전화를 합니다. 점심 식사를 하고... 책이나 성경을 읽고... 교회 일이 있으면 하고, 심방도 합니다. 저녁이 되면 식사를 하고, T.V.를 보고... 몸도 안좋고, 마음도 피곤하니... 일찍 잠자리에 듭니다. 이런 삶이 10년 이상 반복되고 있습니다.

뭐가 잘못됐습니까? 노신사도, 그 장로님도... 도대체 무엇 악한 일을 했습니까? 도둑질을 했습니까? 거짓말을 했습니까? 일어나서 기도하고, 밥 먹고, 책 읽고, 사람들 만나고, 또 먹고, 운동하고... 또 먹고.... TV.보고 자고... 또 일어나고... 나쁜 일을 한 것도 아니고, 죄를 지은 것도 아니지 않습니까? 일이야 젊었을 때 많이 했고, 주일되면 교회 가고.... 뭐가 잘못입니까? 이렇게 살면 어떻습니까?

그런데 여러분, C.S. Lewis는 왜 이렇게 살고 있는 노신사의 하루에 대해서 오늘도 사탄이 승리한 날이라고 말했을까요? 왜 이장로님은 그렇게 살고 있는 자신에 대해 눈물 흘리며 가슴을 쳤을까요....? 우리는 이렇게 살아도 좋은 것일까요?

3. 가치와 사명

오늘 허락하신 본문에는 사람을 지으신 이야기가 등장합니다. 자, 사람을 지은 재료는 무엇일까요? 2장 7절에 보면 하나님은 사람을 흙으로 지으시고 생기를 불어넣으셨다고 했습니다. 그렇다면 모든 흙은 사람이 될 수 있을까요? 아닙니다. 1장에서의 창조 이야기는 흙보다 더 중요하고 본질적인 재료가 있다고 말합니다. 바로 하나님의 형상입니다. 사람이 하나님이 형상대로 지음을 받았다는 것 - 이것은 사람의 가치를 결정합니다. 잘 기억하시기 바랍니다. 사람은 하나님의 형상이라는 ‘가치중심’을 가지고 있습니다. 아무리 못나고 연약한 사람도 무시당해서는 안되고, 인권이 말살당해서도 안되며... 그 어떤 상황 속에서도 존중받아야 하는 것은 모든 사람 안에는 하나님의 형상이라는 가장 중요한 가치가 숨어 있기 때문입니다.

그리고 사람에게는 이 가치가 결정하는 중요한 요소가 하나 있습니다. 그것은 사명입니다. 신학자들은 창세기 1장 27-28절을 ‘문화명령’이라고 부릅니다. 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받은 사람은 이 세상에서 자신이 먼저 하나님의 뜻대로 살고, 다른 모든 것을 하나님의 뜻대로 살도록 하는 고귀한 사명을 가지고 있습니다. 땅을 정복하고 다스린다는 것은 사유화하고 파괴하라는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님의 뜻으로 섬기고 다스려야 합니다. 사람이 그 삶으로 하나님이 허락하신 사명을 실천할 때 하나님의 나라와 하나님의 뜻이 실현됩니다.

오늘 말씀을 통해서 두 가지 단어를 기억하셔야 합니다. ‘가치’와 ‘사명’입니다. 사람에게는 하나님이 허락하신 ‘하나님의 형상’이라는 가치가 깃들어 있습니다. 사람은 하나님의 뜻을 따라 세상을 하나님의 영광으로 다스리는 사명을 받았습니다. 인류의 역사에서 ‘가치와 사명’을 가장 잘 실현한 한 사람이 있습니다. 하나님의 형상일 뿐만 아니라 하나님 자신이셨고, 자신의 생명을 제단에 바쳐서 하나님의 뜻대로 세상을 다스리시는 분, 바로 예수님입니다. 하나님이 사람에게 허락하신 신적 가치와 신적 사명, 예수님을 통해서 완전히 실현되었습니다.

4. 성도 보통씨가 사는 법

사실 지난 해 이정기 장로님은 하나님의 부르심을 받았습니다. 저와 만난 후에 장로님의 삶이 그동안 얼마나 변화되었는지는 알지 못합니다. 다만 장로님이 가슴을 쳤던 반복되는 일상의 현실에서 그 어떤 작은 변화라도 만드셨기를 바라고, 지금은 하나님의 품에서 평안과 안식을 누리시기를 바랍니다. 하지만... 문제는 있습니다. 만일 C.S. Lewis의 책에 나오는 노신사와 제가 만난 장로님이 그 이후에도 계속 아무런 변화가 없는 삶을 산다면... 일상은 반복되고, 세월은 흘러가며, 원하지 않아도 하나님을 만날 날이 가까워질텐데... 삶이 어디로 흘러가는지, 무엇을 위해 사는지를 고민하지 않고 / 질문하지 않고 / 대답하지 않고 / 삶으로 증명하지 않고.... 그저 이렇게 매일을 반복하며 살고 있다면.... 우리는 이렇게 살아도 괜찮을까요? 우리가 잘 알지 못하는 영국의 신사나 여러분이 만난 적이 없는 이정기 장로님 말고... 지금 이곳에서 예배하고 있는 우리들 모두는.... 지금처럼 살아도 되는 것일까요?

수많은 피조물 중에서 사람은 세상의 모든 피조물과 다릅니다. 나무와 다르고 짐승과 다릅니다. 모든 식물은 씨 뿌려지고 자라고 꽃피고 열매 맺고 그리고 죽습니다. 모든 짐승들 또한 그렇습니다. 그들 모두는 하나님이 허락하신 본능을 따라 시간의 흐름을 따라 살다가 사라집니다. 그러나 사람은 다릅니다. 29절과 30절을 보십시오. 하나님은 세상의 모든 식물과 모든 짐승들을 사람의 먹거리로 주셨습니다. 그렇게 가치와 사명이 없는 세상의 모든 식물과 동물은 하나님이 허락하신 가치와 사명으로 사는 사람들을 위해서 존재할 뿐입니다. 그런데 말입니다... 사람은 다릅니다. 사람은 하나님의 형상이라는 빛나고 아름다운 가치가 그 속에 있습니다. 가치 중심의 삶을 살아야 합니다. 우리 안에 있는 가치가 빛나는 삶을 살아야 합니다. 하나님이 내 안에 있습니다. 내 삶을 통해 하나님이 드러나는 삶이어야 합니다. 사명으로 살아야 합니다. 삶에 목적과 방향이 있어야 합니다. 내가 무엇을 위해 살고 있고, 내 삶은 어디로 가고 있는지를 말할 수 있어야 합니다. 시간의 강물에 그저 둥둥 떠내려가는 삶은.... 우리들의 집 앞에 뿌리를 내린 나무와도 같고, 때가 되면 우리의 식탁에 오르는 짐승과도 같습니다. 가치와 사명으로 사는 삶, 우리를 지으신 하나님께서 우리에게 던지는 엄중한 질문입니다.

성도 보통씨는 오늘도 아침에 눈을 뜹니다. 하루가 시작되었습니다. 나를 움직이는 가치와 내가 사는 이유를 먼저 스스로에게 묻습니다. 내 안에 하나님이 있고, 오늘도 나는 하나님을 만나며 증거하며 하나님의 나라를 섬기며 살겠습니다. 오늘도 하나님의 형상이 내 안에서 빛나고, 오늘도 내가 가는 길이 분명합니다. 성도 보통씨가 잠자리에 듭니다. 오늘 하루도 열심히 살았습니다. 오늘도 세상은 나를 통해 하나님을 만났습니다. 내 삶으로 하나님의 뜻대로 사는 삶이 무엇인지 증거했습니다. 하니님의 형상이라는 가치와 하나님의 나라라는 사명이 증거되었습니다. 입가에 미소가 번집니다. 안식을 주신 하나님께 감사하며 잠듭니다. 성도 보통씨는 오늘도 승리하며 살았습니다.
