'Missionary Church' - 25. Between a hero and a monster

 

 

The Israelites said to Gideon, "Rule over us - you, your son and your grandson- because you have saved us out of the hand of Midian." But Gideon told them, "I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you." And he said, "I do have one request, that each of  you give me an earring from your share of the plunder." (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.) They answered, "we'll be glad to give them." So they spread out a garment, and each man threw a ring from his plunder onto it. The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels, not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels' necks. Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town.  All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.  Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon's lifetime, the land enjoyed peace forty years.  Jerub-Baal son of Joash went back home to live. He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives. His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelech. Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.  No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. They also failed to show kindness to the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) for all the good things he had done for them.

 

 

Do you know the movie title 'Avengers'? It is a Super Hero action film.  Meaning, heroes with special abilities come out and saves humanity.  The Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawk-eye and Black Widow are main characters.  They have special abilities that others do not have. The alien invasion of the earth begins and fights between the alien race and unified as one team centering on the director of international peace keeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D, Nick Fury.  You many think that this is a nonsense film... but the origin of this film starts from 1916, a hundred years ago. Since the First World War, you can see that the Western world thinks that their future is not bright. Politics, economy, religion and culture will not save them. They began to imagine superhero who would save mankind. So Superman film came out, Batman appeared, so did the Spider-Man, and X-man appeared as well... and the company that created the comic Marvel made the Avengers series. The story is very simple. The world is segregated between good and bad. The human beings are in crisis ans super-humans, who have been living with the people, appear and saves them from the crisis.

 

 

In fact, the structure of these stories is similar to that of the Bible. Judges are a record of the time of darkness, each of whom was living in his own right. God's chosen country when Israel suffers from idolatry and sin, God chooses and anoints one of Israel.  He saves Israel by judging him.  Gideon, whom we met in today's scripture, is one of the judges with the most dramatic scenes. He was a very ordinary farmer, a man who hesitated with fear and disbelief in the calling of God. But when he obeys God's call, he becomes a remarkable hero in the history of Israel. He destroyed more than 130,000 Midian armies with 300 warriors and ruled Israel for 40 years.

 

 

But as you have seen in today's text, his later years are not so beautiful. He worshiped idols, reigned like a king, and allowed the enslavement of his sons. Gideon's family proclaimed that Israel had left God. If so, what is Gideon's identity? Is he a normal person like us? Is he the hero who saved Israel? A monster that lead Israel into idolatry and sin?

  

 

1.Bible, story of typical people

 

Most people in the Bible are very ordinary. Saul, who was the first king of Israel, was a farmer, and David was a shepherd. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were also nomads who raised the sheep. Moses, who had been a prince of Egypt for 40 years, had been an ordinary shepherd in the Midian wilderness for 40 years. Jesus' disciples were fishermen and tax collectors. Jesus' father was a carpenter, and Jesus was also a carpenter. They were very ordinary people living just like us most of the time.

 

So was Gideon. He was a fearful and anxious farmer. Let's look at the scene where Jehovah's angel calls him.

 

"When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, 'The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.' 'But sir,' Gideon replied, 'if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the Lord has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian." Judges 6:12-13  He was the one who stole the wheat secretly from the Midianites. The Bible does not say that he had a special will to fight the Midian, or any qualification to represent Israel. Rather, he is disappointed in God and despised of the reality of Israel. How could he be a hero to save Israel from the hands of Midian? What has changed him?

 

 

2.Hero's qualities

 

A young American director specialized in documentary films traveled around the world for two years to find the answer for one specific question he had. I want to show you the introduction of that documentary. Can you depict the question? He wondered and questioned, "what is the quality of being a hero?"  He thought that by learning and training those qualities, everyone could live as a hero. He asks people who have done meaningful things that others cannot. "How did you do that?" "Are you originally a special person?" But all the replies were the same.  "no, I am not a special person at all. I did what I ought to do. If you see a person who is suffering, you will go help. It's just a humane act. Atlerer Michael Riesdie Montseur, the woman who hid Jews from his life under Nazi Germany said. Wesley O'Triff, who risked and saved a person who fell on the subway track, said, "what I did was a special thing, but I am not a special person." In their confession, we can find the answer. There is no qualification to be a special person, a quality to practice good and beneficial work for many others is a hero. If you live according to the good nature and will. If you are willing to devote yourselves to help neighbors, making the honest and right choices, and in situations that require your strength, time and finances is true hero. On the way to Samaria, seeing the man who met the robber, telling him why he is, and not just passing by. It is to devote oneself to the desperate reason of the person who met the robber. We become neighbors of those who have met robbers, and become neighbors of Jesus who have chosen the cross for us. That is a hero.

 

  

3.  Between Heroes and Monsters

 

Gideon, an ordinary, cowardly, timid, and resentful young man, how did he become a hero?

 

In the history that God records, you can find two qualities of heroes who save God's people. The first is obedience. Moses did, Abraham did, Gideon did, David did. The disciples did. They obeyed God's word and will. A person who takes part in the thoughts and plans of God who builds and saves people, who makes judgments and decisions according to the good and righteous will of God, who determines the value and purpose of life from the small things that follow the Word of God.  That is the person who does the work of God in the world where the person lives. Another quality is dedication. Those who live according to the thoughts and intentions of God did not calculate. You obey because God said so, and dedicate because it was right thing to do. The degree of commitment I should devote is 'as much as I can' with faith and the circumstances given. God is never not satisfied with the amount of devotion because it is less or over satisfied because our devotion is overflowing. God sees our true heart. God works with people who follows their heart with God's considerate and dedicates.

 

 

The problem is the scripture of today that we did not consider about Gideon.  We view much about Gideon's 300 warriors and their fighting but do not think about Gideon's last years.  More important than his heroism is contemplate on his later years. His last remembrance of the Bible is unfortunate. He became arrogant. Israel want to make him king. But he declines. "But Gideon told them, I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you." Judges 8:23. However, he gathered the gold earrings from the people and made the gold ephod and kept it in his castle town.  The ephod is a sleeveless vest over a semaphore robe, which the priests wore when they were performing their duties. Because it was a garment symbolizing the spiritual authority of the priest, many times in Judges it is served as an idol. Why did Gideon make an ephod of gold and put it in his house? He said that he would not be a king, but he showed that the center of the religious authority and political power of Israel is within him by having the golden ephod presence in his house. He did not stop when the people worshiped it. Because the worship of the gold ephod was a worship of Gideon himself. What is the result? First, the moral standards for oneself collapse. There were many wives and 70 sons. Second, the lives of their children collapse. Judges 9 records the atrocities of their sons. The son Abimelech kills his 70 brothers and becomes king himself. He also face a gruesome death. Third, God's people Israel falls. Israel falls into idolatry.

 

 

God's word came to Gideon, who lived a very ordinary life. When he obeys the word, he lives a heroic life. In the Bible, a hero is a man who lives according to God's will in a man's world. It means that the word of God becomes a body in human life. As Gideon humbly obeyed and fully devoted, he was the one who performed the will of God in man's world. However, he fails to keep his life as a hero. He became over self-proud. He enjoyed the authority and glory of God that he has given to man's life as his own. He said he knew and said he would do it, but he could not do it. He became a monster that distorted Israel's history.

 

 

4.Typical Church members' decision

 

As you know, the main character of sermon is typical church members. You and I. We are very ordinary and ordianry people...what do you think? Could we be a hero too?  Can we live according to God's will in this world like our ancestors of faith in the Bible? Can we prove God's word in our lives? If we can, we become the Avengers. We also become heroes like Gideon. Not a hero that reaches higher success, or achieve lot of accomplishment, become famous, and powerful but rather become a church member and congregation ho listens and acts with God's word and will. 

 

 

We can also live under the monsters or

power of monsters.

This world is already full of monsters. We are personalizing and personalizing all the grace that God has given us. In essence, capitalism

 is opposed to mam-monism, materialistic and biblical values. It is like Gideon, who tells us that we believe in God and can not escape from material-centered life, that he will not become king, Eventually he became an indelible monster of Israel's history.

 Gideon, a very ordinary man like us, becomes a man of God when he humbly obeys and devotes his life. He becomes a monster when he is proud and self-asserts the grace and glory of God. We too .... can.

 

 

Congregation! Do you not want to live as a hero? We do not need great changes and abilities. It is not individuals who are superior in ability but who lives according to God's word and will. It is more important that in our lives, God's words become realized in our lives. Those who see the church, see the world, see their neighbors with God's heart and eyes and live the lives of God's will.... they are the Avengers of God.  What we must do is obey God's word and dedicate our individual amount of faith. On the other hand, we can easily become monsters like Gideon. Our greatest enemy is hiding in us. Gideon would have never thought that he would betray God. Even though there is an ephod made of gold in the house, people worship it, power and glory are concentrated in him, life collapses, children collapse, Israel collapses..He is satisfied with his own righteousness and have lived. Difference between the Heroes and monsters are like a piece of paper.

 

 

One praise comes to my mind. Lets praise and end sermon. It is called "Father's heart". The superman who God is waiting for is you and me who live the life of this world everyday with the eyes and heart of Heavenly Father.​

‘어벤저스’(Avengers)라는 영화를 아십니까? 수퍼 히어로 액션’영화입니다. 특별한 능력을 가진 영웅들이 나와서 인류를 구하는 액션을 보여주는 영화라는 뜻입니다. 캡틴 아메리카, 아이언맨, 토르, 헐크, 호크아이, 블랙 위도우가 주인공들입니다. 이들은 다른 사람들이 가지지 못한 특별한 능력을 가지고 있습니다. 외계인의 지구침공이 시작되고 국제평화유지기구인 S.H.I.E.L.D.의 국장 닉 퓨리를 중심으로 하나의 팀으로 뭉쳐서 외계 종족과 싸웁니다. 무슨 이런 말도 안되는 영화가 있나...라고 생각하실지 모르지만 이 영화의 기원은 지금부터 100년도 더 전인 1916년부터 시작됩니다. 제 1차 세계대전 이후 서방 세계는 그들의 미래가 밝지만은 않다는 생각을 합니다. 정치도, 경제도, 종교나 문화도 그들을 구원하지 못할 것입니다. 그들은 인류를 구원할 초인들을 상상하기 시작했습니다. 수퍼맨이 그래서 나왔고, 배트맨이 등장했고, 스파이더맨이 나왔으며, X맨이 등장했고... 마블이라는 만화를 만드는 회사에서는 에벤저스 시리즈를 제작했습니다. 스토리는 아주 단순합니다. 선과 악이 구별되어 있고, 인류는 위기에 처했으며 사람들과 섞여 살던 초인들이 각 상황에 따라 나타나서 지구를 위기에서 구합니다.

 

사실 이런 이야기들의 구조는 성경의 사사기와 비슷합니다. 사사기는 각자 자기 소견에 옳은 대로 살고 있던 어둠의 시대에 대한 기록입니다. 하나님이 선택하신 나라 이스라엘이 우상숭배와 죄악에 빠져서 고통당할 때 하나님은 이스라엘 가운데 한 사람을 택하시고 기름 부으십니다. 그를 사사로 세우셔서 이스라엘을 구원하십니다. 오늘 본문에서 우리가 만난 기드온은 그 중에 가장 드라마틱한 장면을 연출하는 사사입니다. 그는 아주 평범한 농부였고, 하나님의 부르심에 두려움과 불신으로 주저했던 사람이었습니다. 그러나 그가 하나님의 부르심에 순종했을 때 이스라엘의 역사에 다시없는 놀라운 영웅이 됩니다. 300명의 용사로 13만이 넘는 미디안 군대를 깨뜨리고 이스라엘을 40년간 다스립니다.

 

하지만 오늘의 본문에서 보신 것처럼 그의 말년은 그리 아름답지 않습니다. 그는 우상을 숭배했고, 왕처럼 군림했으며, 아들들의 만행을 허용했습니다. 기드온의 집안으로 말미암아 이스라엘은 하나님을 떠났다고 했습니다. 그렇다면 여러분, 과연 기드온의 정체는 무엇일까요? 그는 우리와 같은 보통 사람입니까? 그는 이스라엘을 구원한 영웅입니까? 이스라엘을 우상숭배와 죄악으로 인도하는 괴물입니까?

 

1. 성경, 보통 사람들의 이야기

성경에 등장하는 대부분의 사람들은 지극히 평범합니다. 이스라엘의 초대왕이었던 사울도 농부였고, 다윗은 목동이었습니다. 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱 또한 양을 치는 유목민이었습니다. 40년 간 애굽의 왕자로 자랐던 모세는 40년 간 미디안 광야에서 평범한 양치기가 되고 말았습니다. 예수님의 제자들은 어부였고, 세리였습니다. 예수님의 아버지는 목수였고, 예수님 또한 한 때 목수였습니다. 그들은 대부분 우리 옆에서 함께 살아가는 아주 보통스러운 사람들입니다.

 

기드온 또한 그렇습니다. 그는 두려움과 염려가 많은 농부입니다. 여호와의 사자가 그를 부르는 장면을 보십시오. “여호와의 사자가 기드온에게 나타나 이르되 큰 용사여 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시도다 기드온이 그에게 대답하되 나의 주여 여호와께서 우리와 함께 계시면 어찌하여 이 모든 일이 우리에게 미쳤나이까 또 우리 열조가 일찍 우리에게 이르기를 여호와께서 우리를 애굽에서 나오게 하신 것이 아니냐 한 그 모든 이적이 어디 있나이까 이제 여호와께서 우리를 버리사 미디안의 손에 붙이셨나이다”(삿 6:12-13) 그는 미디안 사람들의 눈을 피해서 몰래 밀을 타작하던 사람입니다. 그가 미디안과 싸우겠다는 특별한 의지를 가졌거나 이스라엘을 대표할만한 어떤 자격을 가지고 있었다고 성경은 말하지 않습니다. 오히려 그는 하나님에 대해 실망하고 이스라엘의 현실에 대해 절망한 사람입니다. 그는 어떻게 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원하는 영웅이 될 수 있었을까요? 그에게 어떤 변화가 있었을까요?

 

2. 영웅의 자질

 

다큐멘터리를 만드는 미국의 한 젊은 감독이 2년 동안 세계 각국을 다니면서 딱 하나의 질문을 던지고 그 답을 찾으려고 노력했습니다. 그가 만든 다큐멘터리의 introduction을 보여드리려고 합니다. http://www.ebs.co.kr/tv/show?prodId=352&lectId=10159578 (0:08~4:31) 여러분은 혹시 그가 세계를 다니면서 던졌던 질문을 발견하셨습니까? 그는 “영웅이 되는 자질은 과연 무엇인가?”를 고민했습니다. 그런 자질을 학습하거나 훈련하면 모두가 다 영웅으로 살 수 있지 않을까 생각했습니다. 그는 다른 사람들이 하지 못하는 의미 있는 일을 했던 사람들에게 묻습니다. “당신은 어떻게 그런 일을 하게 되었나요? 당신은 원래 특별한 사람이었나요?” 그런데 그들은 한결 같이 같은 대답했습니다. “아닙니다. 나는 전혀 특별한 사람이 아니예요. 나는 마땅히 해야 할 일을 했을 뿐이예요. 고통 받는 사람을 보면 당연히 도와주러 가게 되잖아요. 그건 그냥 모든 인간의 도리예요.” 나치 독일 치하에서 자신의 목숨을 걸고 유태인들을 숨겨준 여인 ‘아틀레르 미하엘리스 디몽쇼’의 말입니다. 지하철 선로에 떨어진 사람을 위험을 무릅쓰고 구했던 웨슬리 오트리는 “내가 한 일은 특별한 일이지만 나는 특별한 사람이 아닙니다.”라고 말했습니다. 이들의 고백에서 우리는 답을 찾을 수 있습니다. 특별한 사람이 되는 자질, 다른 많은 사람들에게 선하고 유익한 일을 실천하는 자질은 따로 있는 것이 아닙니다. 우리들이 우리 안에 허락하신 선한 성품과 의지를 따라 살아가는 것입니다. 어려운 이웃을 돕고, 정직하고 바른 선택을 하고, 자신의 힘과 시간과 재정을 필요로 하는 상황을 만날 때 기꺼이 헌신하는 것입니다. 사마리아로 가는 길에서 강도를 만난 사람을 보고, 자신에게 있는 이유를 대면서, 그냥 지나치지 않는 것입니다. 강도 만난 사람의 절박한 이유에 자신을 헌신하는 것입니다. 비로소 강도만난 사람의 이웃이 되고, 우리를 위해 십자가를 선택하신 예수님의 이웃이 됩니다. 그가 영웅입니다.

 

3. 영웅과 괴물 사이

 

평범했고 비겁했고 겁 많고 원망 많았던 청년 기드온, 그는 어떻게 영웅이 되었을까요?

 

하나님이 기록하시는 역사에 있어서 하나님의 백성들을 구원하는 영웅들의 자질은 딱 두 가지입니다. 첫째는 순종입니다. 모세가 그랬고 아브라함이 그랬고 기드온이 그랬으며 다윗이 그랬습니다. 제자들이 그랬습니다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀과 뜻에 순종했습니다. 사람을 지으시고 구원하시는 하나님의 생각과 계획에 참여하는 사람, 하나님의 선하고 의로운 뜻을 따라 판단하고 결정하는 사람, 하나님의 말씀을 따라 작은 일에서부터 삶의 가치와 목적까지를 결정하는 사람... 바로 그 사람이 사는 세상에서 하나님의 일을 하는 사람입니다. 또 한 가지 자질은 헌신입니다. 하나님의 생각과 뜻을 따라 사는 사람은 숫자를 계산하지 않았습니다. 하나님께서 말씀하셨기 때문에 순종하고, 그것이 옳았기 때문에 헌신합니다. 내가 해야 할 헌신의 정도는 나의 믿음의 분량과 주어지는 상황을 따라 ‘내게 주시는 마음만큼’입니다. 하나님께서 우리의 헌신이 적어서 덜 만족하시거나 우리의 헌신이 넘쳐서 더 만족하시지는 않습니다. 하나님은 우리의 마음의 중심을 보십니다. 허락하신 마음을 하나님이 주신 것으로 알아서 그 마음을 따라 헌신하는 하나님의 사람과 함께 하나님은 일하십니다.

 

문제는 우리가 기드온에 대해서 잘 생각하지 않는 오늘의 본문 내용입니다. 우리는 기드온의 300용사와 그들의 싸움에 대해서는 많이 묵상하지만 기드온의 말년에 대해 생각하지 않습니다. 그의 영웅담보다 더 중요한 것은 그의 마지막에 대한 묵상입니다. 성경이 기억하는 그의 마지막 모습은 불행합니다. 먼저 그는 교만해졌습니다. 이스라엘이 그를 왕으로 삼으려합니다. 그는 당연히 거절합니다. “기드온이 그들에게 이르되 내가 너희를 다스리지 아니하겠고 나의 아들도 너희를 다스리지 아니할 것이요 여호와께서 너희를 다스리시리라”(삿 8:23) 하지만 그는 백성들에게서 전리품으로 거둔 금귀고리를 모으고 그것으로 금에봇을 만들어서 자신의 성읍에 두었다고 했습니다. 에봇이란 세마포 겉옷 위에 걸치는 소매 없는 조끼 모양의 윗옷으로, 제사장들이 직무를 수행할 때 입었던 의복입니다. 제사장의 영적 권위를 상징하는 옷이었기 때문에 사사기에서는 여러 번 우상처럼 섬김을 받습니다. 기드온은 왜 금으로 에봇을 만들어서 그것을 자신의 집에 두었을까요? 그는 말로는 자신이 왕이 되지 않겠다고 했지만 금에봇을 자신의 집에 둠으로 말미암아 이스라엘의 종교적인 권위와 정치적인 권력의 중심이 자신에게 있다는 것을 보여줬습니다. 백성들이 그것을 숭배할 때 막지 않았습니다. 금에봇을 숭배하는 것은 곧 기드온 자신에 대한 숭배였기 때문입니다. 그 결과는 무엇입니까? 첫째 자신에 대한 도덕적 기준이 무너집니다. 아내가 많았고 아들만 70명이라고 했습니다. 둘째 자녀들의 삶이 무너집니다. 사사기 9장에는 그 아들들의 만행이 기록됩니다. 아비멜렉이라는 아들은 자기 형제 70명을 죽이고 스스로 왕이 됩니다. 그 또한 곧 처참한 죽음을 맞이합니다. 셋째 하나님의 백성 이스라엘이 무너집니다. 이스라엘은 우상 숭배에 빠집니다.

 

아주 평범한 삶을 살았던 기드온에게 하나님의 말씀이 찾아왔습니다. 그 말씀에 순종했을 때 그는 영웅적인 삶을 삽니다. 성경에서 영웅이란 ‘사람의 세상에서 하나님의 뜻대로 사는 사람’입니다. 사람의 삶에서 하나님의 말씀이 육신이 되는 것을 말합니다. 기드온이 겸손하게 순종하고 전적으로 헌신할 때 그는 사람의 세상에서 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 사람이었습니다. 그런데 그는 영웅으로서의 삶을 계속 지키는 일에는 실패합니다. 그는 교만해졌습니다. 사람의 삶에 허락하신 하나님의 권위와 영광을 자신의 것으로 누립니다. 그는 안다고 말하고, 그렇게 하겠다고 말하지만 실천하지 못했습니다. 그는 이스라엘 역사를 왜곡하는 괴물이 되고 말았습니다.

4. 성도 보통씨의 선택

 

아시다시피 저는 요즘 설교의 주인공은 성도 보통씨입니다. 여러분과 저입니다. 아주 평범하고 보통스럽게 살아가는 우리는... 어떤가요? 우리도 영웅이 될 수 있을까요? 성경에 나오는 신앙의 선조들처럼 이 세상에서 하나님의 뜻을 따라 살 수 있을까요? 우리의 삶으로 하나님의 말씀을 증명할 수 있을까요? 그럴 수 있다면 우리도 어벤저스가 됩니다. 우리도 기드온과 같은 영웅이 됩니다. 높이 올라가고 많이 성취하고 유명해지고 권력을 휘둘러서 영웅이 아니라 하나님의 말씀이 육신이 되게 살아가는 성도이자 교회가 될 수 있습니다.

 

또한 우리는 괴물 혹은 괴물의 권력 아래에서 살아갈 수도 있습니다. 이미 이 세상은 괴물로 충만합니다. 하나님이 허락하신 모든 은혜를 자기화하고 개인화하고 있습니다. 본질적으로 자본주의는 맘모니즘, 즉 물질중심주의이면서 성경적인 가치와 반대됩니다. 우리가 하나님을 믿는다고 하면서 물질중심의 삶을 벗어나지 못하는 것은 마치 왕이 되지 않겠다고 말하면서 금으로 만든 에봇을 자기 집에다 모시는 기드온과 같습니다. 결국 그는 이스라엘 역사의 지울 수 없는 괴물이 되고 말았습니다. 우리처럼 아주 보통스러운 사람이었던 기드온이 겸손하게 순종하고 자신의 삶을 헌신할 때 하나님의 사람이 됩니다. 그가 교만하여 하나님의 은혜와 영광을 자기화할 때 그는 괴물이 됩니다. 우리도.... 그렇습니다.

 

성도 여러분! 영웅으로 살고 싶지 않으십니까? 우리에게 대단한 변화와 능력이 필요하지 않습니다. 성경이 필요로 하는 영웅은 능력이 뛰어난 개인이 아니라 하나님의 말씀과 뜻을 따라 살아가는 사람들이기 때문입니다. 우리가 살아가는 현장에서 하나님의 말씀이 삶으로 실현되도록 하는 것입니다. 하나님의 마음과 눈으로 교회를 보고 세상을 보고 이웃을 보면서 하나님의 뜻이 내 삶이 되도록 살아가는 사람들.... 그들이 바로 하나님이 보내신 어벤저스입니다. 우리가 해야 하는 일은 하나님의 말씀에 대한 순종과 믿음의 분량에 따르는 헌신입니다. 한편 우리는 기드온처럼 쉽게 괴물이 될 수도 있습니다. 우리의 가장 큰 적은 우리 안에 숨어 있습니다. 기드온은 자신이 하나님을 배반한 적이 없다고 생각했을 것입니다. 비록 우리 집에 금으로 만든 에봇이 있고, 사람들이 그것을 숭배하고, 권력과 영광이 자신에게 집중되고, 삶이 무너지고, 자녀들이 무너지고, 이스라엘이 무너져도... 그는 자기의(自己義)에 만족하며 살았을 것입니다. 영웅과 괴물은 종이 한 장 차이입니다.

 

찬양이 하나 생각납니다. 함께 부르고 말씀을 마치겠습니다. “아버지의 마음”입니다. 성경이 기다리는 초인(超人)은 하나님 아버지의 시선과 마음으로 이 세상의 삶을 매일 살아가는 바로 여러분과 저입니다.
