위로부터 건축되는 교회 [에베소서 4:1-16]

   로마의 비트루비우스(Vitruvius)는 건축의 3요소를 ‘구조’, ‘기능’, ‘미’라고 정의했습니다.  르네상스시대에 와서 알베르트라는 사람은 “빌딩은 선(line)과 물질(matter)로 이루어진 하나의 몸(body)이다” 라고 말했습니다.  이렇듯 중세에서 현대에 이르기까지 건축에 대한 수많은 철학과 이론들이 있어왔습니다만, 그럼에도 불구하고 모든 건축가들이 하나같이 가장 중요하게 꼽는 것은 ‘구조’였습니다.  특별히, 건물 최하부에서 건물의 각종 하중을 받아 그 하중을 지반에 안전하게 전달하는 부분 ‘기초 구조’가 제일 중요하다고 말합니다.

 

   성경에도 건축물들이 있습니다.  아주 오래전부터 고유의 구조와 기능과 미를 뽐내면서 성경의 시대마다 있어왔습니다.  천지와 에덴과 그리고 사람이 그렇게 만들어졌습니다.  광야에서 이동식 성막이 그렇게 건축되었고 약속의 땅 이스라엘의 고정식 솔로몬성전이 그렇게 건축되었습니다.  그리고 그리스도의 오심과 나심과 사심과 죽으심과 부활하심, 그리고 성령님의 강림을 통해 마지막 건출물을 만드셨습니다.  그것이 바로 교회입니다.   

 

   세상의 다른 건축물들과 교회를 한번 비교해보면,  공통점과 차이점이 같은 부분이라는 사실을 알 수 있습니다.  공통점은 기초 구조를 가장 중요하게 여기는 부분이고, 차이점은 그 기초 구조의 위치가 서로 다르다는 점입니다.  세상의 모든 건축물의 기초는 아래에 있습니다.  다시 말해, 땅에서 하늘을 향해 건물이 올라가는 것입니다.  그래서 모든 건물의 기초는 땅입니다.  그런데 교회는 다릅니다.  교회는 세상에 존재하지만 그 기초가 땅에 있지 않습니다.  교회의 기초는 하늘에 있으며 하나님께 있습니다.  왜냐하면 교회는 영적인 건축물이기 때문에 그렇습니다. 그러므로 지상에 존재하는 모든 교회들은 교회가 위로부터 건축되어야 된다는 사실을 꼭 기억해야 할 것입니다.

 

   그렇다면, 구체적으로 어떤 교회가 위로부터 건축되는 교회일까요?

 

   첫째, 머리를 세우는 교회입니다.  

오늘 본문 15절을 보십시오.  “오직 사랑안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자랄지라 그는 머리니 곧 그리스도라”  이 구절을 얼핏보면 아래에서 위로 건축되는 구조처럼 보입니다.  그러나 그렇지 않습니다.  이 구절은 교회의 성장의 목표와 교회의 영적구조를 동시에 보여주고 있는 것입니다.  5장23절에 보시면 남편과 아내의 역할을 설명하면서 교회에 대해 더 정확하게 보여줍니다.  “이는 남편이 아내의 머리 됨이 그리스도께서 교회의 머리 됨과 같음이니 그가 바로 몸의 구주시니라”  골로새서 1장18절, “그는 몸인 교회의 머리시라 그가 근본이시요 죽은 자들 가우데서 먼저 나신 이시니 이는 친히 만물의 으뜸이 되려 하심이요”  그러므로 모든 지상교회의 기초는 머리되시는 그리스도께 있는 줄로 믿으시기 바랍니다.  다시 말해서, 그리스도께서 교회의 DNA가 되셨습니다.  교회 성장의 원천이 그리스도께 있기 때문에 교회에는 반드시 머리되신 그리스도로를 먼저 세워져야합니다.

 

   사람들은 사랑의 교회에 더이상 사랑이 없고 명성교회에 더이상 하나님의 명성이 없다고 말합니다.  사랑의 교회가 사람의 교회가 되었다고 이야기합니다.  왜 그렇습니까?  교회의 머리되신 그리스도를 가장 우선적 고려 대상으로 생각하지 않기 때문입니다.  명성교회측은 세습이 부당한줄 알면서도 왜 굳이 불법의 길, 한국교회의 몰락의 길, 치욕된 길을 선택했을까요?  그 교회의 머리가 이제 더이상 그리스도가 아니시기 때문입니다.  라오디게아 교회를 향한 하나님의 음성(계4:17)이 귓전에 울리는 것 같습니다.  “네가 말하기를 나는 부자라 부요하여 부족한 것이 없다 하나 네 곤고한 것과 가련한 것과 가난한 것과 눈 먼 것과 벌거벗은 것을 알지 못하는도다” 사데교회를 향해 하나님께서 이런 말씀도 하셨습니다(계3:1). “내가 너의 행위를 아노니 네가 살았다 하는 이름은 가졌으나 죽은 자로다”

 

   제가 몇년전에 한국에 있을 때 경주 남산을 등산할 기회가 있었습니다.  산을 오르다가 힘들어서 중턱쯤에서 쉬었습니다.  큰 나무가 한 그루가 있어서 그 나무 밑에서 숨을 고르고 물을 마시면서 잠시 쉬었습니다.  나무가 참 좋아보였습니다.  오랜 세월동안 그 자리에서 많은 등산객들의 쉼터 역할을 했을 것입니다.  그런데 좀 더 가까이에서 그 나무를 살펴보니까 안타깝게도 그 큰 나무는 뿌리부터 둥치까지 다 썩어가고 있었습니다.  나무의 둥치안에는 온갖 벌레들이 가득 모여 있었습니다.  그 벌레들 때문에 앉아서 쉬는 것을 포기하고 산의 정상으로 발걸음을 옮겼습니다. 정상에는 큰 바위가 여럿 있었고 거기에도 저의 눈을 사로잡는 나무가 있었습니다.  그 나무는 바위위에서 자랐기 때문에 키가 아주 작았습니다.  그런데 그 나무는 썩지 않았습니다.  오히려 그 나무는 바위위에서도 자신의 생기를 뽐내고 있었습니다.  그때 저는 나무의 겉모습이 중요한 것이 아니라 그 나무가 생명이 있는지가 중요하다는 사실을 깨달았습니다.  교회도 마찬가지입니다.  하나님 앞에서의 큰 교회는 숫자가 큰 교회가 아니라 그리스도를 교회의 머리로 두는 생명이 넘치는 교회입니다.  바로 그 생명의 기초에  그리스도의 몸인 성도가 연결되어야 하는 것입니다.  

 

   둘째, 위로부터 건축되는 교회는 몸을 세우는 교회입니다.  

   교회의 몸은 부름받은신 성도님들입니다.  그 성도들을 영적으로 성장시키는 것이 바로 몸을 세운다는 뜻입니다.  바울은 하나님께서는 이 일을 위해서 각 사람에게 은혜를 주셨다고 말씀합니다.  7절을 보십시오.  “우리 각 사람에게 그리스도의 선물의 분량대로 은혜를 주셨나니”  여기 7절에서 말하는 ‘은혜’는 죄인을 구원할 때 사용하는 그 은혜가 아닙니다. 이 은혜는 교회의 성장과 관련해서 구원받은 자에게 하나님이 선물로 주시는 봉사를 위한 ‘은사’를 가리킵니다.  11절에 보시면, 구체적으로 그 은사를 실천하는 사람들이 누구인지를 보여줍니다.  “그가 어떤 사람은 사도로, 어떤 사람은 선지자로, 어떤 사람은 복음 전하는 자로, 어떤 사람은 목사와 교사로 삼으셨으니”  이 사역자들은 일차적으로 그리고 포괄적으로 교회의 직분자들을 가리킵니다.  바울은 본문 7절과 8절에서 모두 “주셨다.”라는 동사를 사용합니다.  7절 끝에 보시면, “분량대로 은혜를 주셨다” 말씀하고 8절 끝에서도 “사람들에게 선물을 주셨다” 말씀합니다.  여러분, 이것이 무엇을 의미합니까?  교회에서 섬기시는 분들은 단지 교회가 세운 사람들이 아니라는 것입니다.  교회의 직분은 승천하신 그리스도께서 교회를 위해 주신 하나님의 선물들(gifts)이라는 뜻입니다.  12절을 보시면, 하나님은 이 직분자들을 통해서 그리스도의 몸인 성도를 세우시기 원하십니다.

 

   그렇다면, 직분자들은 성도들을 어떻게 세워가야 합니까?

 

   오늘 말씀에서 두 가지를 소개합니다.  첫번째는 성도를 하나되게 하는 것입니다.  13절을 보십시오.  “우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어”  3절에서는 그것을 힘써 지키라고 말씀합니다.  “평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라”  다양한 성향의 사람들이 교회로 모입니다.  유대인과 이방인이 하나가 될 수 있을까요?  신자와 불신자 하나가 될 수 있을까요?  유식자와 무식자가 하나가 될 수 있을까요?  판사와 전과자가 하나가 될 수 있을까요?  하루 종일 폐지를 주워 2천원으로 하루를 사는 할머니와 2백만원짜리 핸드백을 들고다니는 할머니는 하나가 될 수 있을까요?  하나가 된다는 건 아무리 생각해도 불가능한 일입니다.  사실 우리는 그렇게 까지 하면서 신앙생활 하고싶어하지 않습니다.  그런데 바울은 서로 하나가 되도록 힘을 써야한고 거듭 말씀합니다.  왜 그렇습니까?  4절을 보십시오.  “몸이 하나이기 때문에 그렇다고 말씀합니다.  다시 말해, 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되었기 때문입니다.  또, 한 성령을 받았기 때문이라고 말씀합니다.  온 우주를 통들어 조금 더 큰 성령은 존재하지 않습니다.  빈부귀천, 무식유식, 남녀노소를 불문하고 그리스도를 믿는 자에게는 똑같은 동일한 본질의 성령께서 평안의 매는 줄로 저와 여러분을 묶어주셨음을 꼭 기억하시기 바랍니다.

 

   여러분에게 이 성령의 하나됨이 있으십니까?  다른 성도님들과 하나가 되기 위해 노력하고 있으십니까?  “저 사람은 너무 이기적이고” “저 사람은 진짜 소심하고” “저 사람은 너무 다혈질이고” “저 사람은 정말 말이 안통하고” “저 사람은 너무 예의가 없고” 이런저런 비판적인 생각들이 여러분을 찾아올 때 여러분은 그것을 어떻게 해결하십니까?  저에게도 그런 생각들이 찾아옵니다.  심적으로 많이 괴롭습니다.  그런 순간이 찾아올 때 저는 그렇게 비판의 잣대를 가지고 다른 사람을 판단하고 있는 저 자신을 먼저 빨리 발견하도록 애를 씁니다.  “내가 바로 판단받아야 될 한 사람이구나” 이것을 저 자신에게 가르칩니다.  “내가 의로운 사람이 아니라 나도 구원받은 죄인 중 한 사람이구나”  여러분, 그래도 안될 때가 있지 않습니까?  그때부터는 상대방의 있는 그대로의 모습을 저의 안으로 받아들입니다.  이것이 쉽지는 않습니다.  내면의 갈등을 거쳐야합니다.  포용의 용량이 커지게 해달라고 하나님께 기도합니다.

 

   프란시스 쉐퍼라는 분은 이런 말씀을 했습니다.

“참된 그리스도인들의 하나됨의 실재를 이 세상이 조금이라도 보기 전까지는, 아버지가 아들을 보내셨으며, 예수님의 주장이 사실이고, 기독교가 참이라는 것을 세상이 믿기를 기대할 수 없다.”

 

   그러므로 성도의 하나됨은 교회성장의 열쇠일 뿐만 아니라 기독교의 정체성의 시금석이며 삼위하나님 사역들의 유일한 증거가 된다는 것입니다.  하나되는 일에 애너지를 함께 쏟으시기를 소망합니다.     

 

   두번째 방법은 그리스도에게 까지 성도들을 장성하게 성장시키는 것입니다.  13절 하반절을 보시면, “그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지”라고 말씀합니다.  왜 성도는 그리스도의 장성한 분량에 까지 자라야합니까?  수준이 너무 높아 보입니다.  그러데 이유가 있습니다.  그 이유는 성도가 영적인 어린 아이가 되지않도록 돕기 위해서입니다.  14절을 보십시오.  “이는 우리가 이제부터 어린 아이가 되지 아니하여 사람의 속임수와 간사한 유혹에 빠져 온갖 교훈의 풍조에 밀려 요동하지 않게 하려 함이라”  신앙생활을 처음하는 분들이라면 누구나 영적으로는 어린 아이입니다.  깨닫는 하나하나가 마치 신앙의 전부인 것처럼 느껴지지 않겠습니까? 만약 누군가가 돕지 않는다면 어느 순간이 되면 성장하는 것을 멈추게 될 것입니다. 

 

   저의 첫째 아들은 로봇을 좋아합니다.  팬타스톰이라는 로봇이 있는데 아마 여러분 중에 누가 그것을 사준다고 하면 바로 뒤도 안돌아보고 따라 갈지도 모릅니다.  둘째 아들은 먹는 것을 엄청 좋아합니다.  아침에 일어나면 항상 첫마디가 굿모닝이 아니라 “엄마밥”입니다.  새벽에도 배가 고프면 일어나서 엄마를 흔들어 깨웁니니다.  “엄마.. 밥”  저의 둘째 아들에게 먹을 걸로 유혹하시면 그냥 대려가실 수 있습니다.  저의 두 아들은 왜 그럴까요?  걔들이 어린 아이라서 그렇습니다.  당장 눈에 보기에 좋은 것들 느껴지기에 좋은 것들에 자신의 몸과 마음을 쉽게 빼앗깁니다.  하나님은 교회가 이런 영적인 어린 아이의 상태에 머물지 않도록 목표를 그리스도에게까지 장성하게 자라라고 말씀하고 있는 것입니다.        

 

   오늘도 세상은 자신의 영광을 세웁니다. 그러나 교회는 그리스도의 몸을 장성하게 세워가야 되는 줄로 믿으시기 바랍니다.  16절에 보면 독특한 단어 하나가 등장합니다.  ‘각 마디’라는 단어입니다.  “그에게서 온 몸이 각 마디를 통하여 도움을 받음으로 연결되고 결합되어 각 지체의 분량대로 역사하여 그 몸을 자라게 하며 사랑 안에서 스스로 세우느니라”  사람을 포함한 살아있는 모든 마디가 있는 동식물들은 그 각 마디를 통해서 성장하게 됩니다.  하나님의 교회도 그렇게 성장한다는 것입니다.  교회의 각 마디로 부름받은 사역자들, 직분자들, 더 나아가서 먼저 믿고 은혜를 아는 성도들을 통해서 성도님들이 서로 연결되고 결합되어서 그리스도의 몸으로 함께 세워져가는 것입니다.

 

   마지막 세번째, 위로부터 건축되는 교회는 사랑안에서 세워지는 교회입니다. 

   성도들 모두가 그리스도를 교회의 머리로 인정한다고 해도 성도들이 온전하게 되고 봉사의 일을 잘 감당하고 모두 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어 장성한 분량의 충만한 데까지 이르렀다 할지라도 교회 안에 사랑이 없을 수 있습니다. 요한계시록 2장에 나오는 에베소교회가 바로 그런 교회였습니다.

“내가 네 행위와 수고와 네 인내를 알고 또 악한 자드을 용납하지 아니한 것과 자칭 사도라 하되 아닌 자들을 시험하여 그의 거짓된 것을 네가 드러낸 것과 또 네가 참고 내 이름을 위하여 견디고 게이르지 아니한 것을 아노라”  하나님으로부터 정말 대단한 칭찬을 받은 교회가 에베소교회입니다.  그러나 단 한 가지 책망때문에 교회의 촛대가 옮겨지게 생겼습니다.  “그러나 너를 책망할 것이 있나니 너의 처음 사랑을 버렸느니라” 

 

   바울은 마지막으로 에베소교회 성도들에게 15절과 16절에서 사랑을 거듭 강조합니다. 메시지 성경은 15절과 16절을 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다.

“하나님은 우리가 충분히 자라서, 모든 면에서 그리스도처럼 온전한 진리를 알고, 사랑으로 그 진리를 말하기를 바라십니다 우리는 그리스도를 따라 갑니다 그분은 우리가 하는 모든 일의 근원이십니다. 그분은 우리가 서로 발맞춰 나아가게 하십니다. 그분의 숨과 피가 우리에게 흘러 영양을 공급하면, 우리는 하나님 안에서 건강하게 자라고 사랑 안에서 강해질 것입니다.”

 

    바울이 말하는 이 사랑은 계시록에서 요한이 사용했던 에베소교회가 잃어버렸던 사랑과 같은 것입니다.  바울은 남녀간의 에로스 사랑이나 좀 더 고차원적인 플라토닉사랑 정도를 말하고 있지 않습니다.  바울은 원초적 사랑을 말씀하고 있습니다.  그 사랑은 새월이 지나도 절대 변하지 않는 사랑입니다.  하나님이 십자가 위에서 온세상에 증명해주신 사랑입니다.  그 어떤 피조물도 절대 흉내내지 못할 하나님의 사랑, 바로 아가페 사랑입니다.

 

   바울은 바로 그 사랑안에서 참된 것을 말하라(speaking the truth in love)고 권면합니다.  진리를 붙들고 사랑을 놓쳐서도 안되며 사랑을 붙들고 진리를 놓아서도 안됩니다. 교회안에서 이 둘은 항상 함께 걸어가야할 파트너입니다.

 

   최근에 한국 고신교단 제68회 총회에 새물결플러스라는 기독교 출판사의 김요한 대표와 순회선교사로 익히 알려진 김용의 선교사님의 이단성 조사에 대한 상정이 있었습니다.  이것을 두고 많은 사람들이 지나치다는 목소리를 내고 있습니다.  당사자들에게도 이단성시비가 심한 정신적 충격이 되었습니다.  그들은 각 영역에서 오랫동안 헌신했으며 지금까지 성실하게 주의 일들을 감당해왔습니다.  그런데 그들의 말과 행동이 최근 조금 이해가 되지 않는 부분이 포착되었다고 해서 그들의 이단성을 시비한다는 것은 교회가 진리만을 강조하여 내린 행동이라고 볼 수 있습니다.  진리에 사랑이 뒷받침 되지 않는다면 이런 일들은 계속해서 일어날 것이며 교계는 끊임없이 계속 분열될 것입니다.

 

   사랑하는 성도 여러분, 땅에서 기초된 것 중에는 영원한 것은 단 하나도 없습니다.  눈에 보이는 것은 시간의 차이가 있을 뿐 모두 다 사라질 것입니다.  교회는 하나님께서 그리스도를 기초로 놓으셨기 때문에 만물이 통일되는 그 날까지 하나님께서 끝까지 붙들어 주실줄로 믿습니다.  우리를 하나로 불러주신 이 초대교회에 저와 여러분의 인생을 드려서 이 교회를 한번 아름답게 함께 세워가시지 않겠습니까?  

 

   저와 여러분을 통해서 그리스도의 거룩한 몸이 그리스도께로 다시 온전히 세워질 것입니다.  하나님께서는 우리 교회를 사용하셔서 하나님의 우주적 통치와 계획속에서 만물을 통일시키실 것입니다.  그러므로, 여러분 우리 교회는 날마다 위로부터 건축되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.  그리스도의 머리를 세우고 그리스도의 몸을 세우며 그리스도의 사랑으로 날마다 세워져가는 교회, 우리 교회, 우리 성도님들 다 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축복합니다.

 

위로부터 건축되는 교회 [에베소서 4:1-16]

Vitruvius asserted that a structure must exhibit the three qualities of firmitatis(stability), utilitatis(utility), and venustatis(beauty). Alberti, the Renaissance architect said that a building is a form of body consisting of both matter and lineaments. The most important and common factor that all architects agree is a ‘structure,’ even there are a lot of philosophy and theories about an architecture though since the medieval times. Especially, ‘Foundation’, a lower portion of building structure that transfer its gravity loads to the earth safely is the most important part.

 

There are structures in the Bible, too. They had their own stabilities, utilities, and beauties for a long time. The sky and the earth, Eden, and the human being were created just like that.  The tabernacle in the desert and the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem were so. And the last structure through the coming of Christ, His birth and death, His resurrection, and the coming down of Holy Spirit is Church.

 

Comparing Church and other buildings in the world, we can understand that the common features and differences come from the same factor. The common area is that foundation is the most important part. The difference is that the locations of foundation are different. Every building in the world puts its foundation at the bottom. In other word, the building is being built up from the ground toward the sky. So the foundation of every building is the ground. However, Church is different. It exists in the world, but the foundation is not in the ground. It is in the Heaven and on God because it is the spiritual structure.  All churches in the world have to remember that Church should be built from above.

 

If so, which one is the church built from above?

 

First, the church is building the head.

Look at the v.15 of today’s scripture.  “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”(Eph 4:15) It seems the structure built up from below. But it’s not. It shows the goal of church growth and its spiritual structure.  In Ch.5 v.23 explaining the roles of husband and wife it shows Church precisely. “For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.”(Eph 5:23) “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” (Col 1:18) I hope you believe that the foundation of all churches in the world is Christ, the head of church. Other words Christ is the DNA of church. The origin of church growth is Christ, so church should build the head, Christ first.

 

People say that there is no more love in Sarang(means love in Korean) church, one of Korean mega church and there is no more God’s fame in Myungsung(means fame in Korean) church, one of Korean mega church. Why? It’s because Christ, the head of church is no more their priority at all. The head of the churches is not Christ any more. It reminds me of the God’s word to the Church in Laodicea. “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.” But you do not realize that you are wretched”(Rev 3:17) To the Church in Sardis “ .. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.(Rev 3:1)

 

A few years ago I climbed up the Kyungju Namsan Mt. in South Korea. I took a short rest halfway up the mountain.  There was a big tree and I got my breath back under the tree drinking water. The tree looked good. It might have been the rest area. With close look, there was decay process on that tree. From the root to the base of its trunk. A lot of bugs filled in the base. Because of the bugs, I resumed climbing up. At the top there were big rocks and the tree that attracted me. It was very tiny because it was based on the rock. However, it was not rotten but vivid on the rock instead. At that time I realized that life in tree is more important than its appearance. Church is the same. The big church in front of God is not mega church, but the church whose head is Christ and is filled with life from Him. From the base of life the body of Christ should be attached.

 

Second, the church is building the body.

The body of church is a Christian. Letting Christians grow spiritually is building the body.  Apostle Paul said, “But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.”(Eph 4:7) The grace here doesn’t mean the grace of salvation for sinner. The grace here is the gift or talent has been given to the saved person for serving others regarding the church growth. In v.11 it shows who the people practice the gift. “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers.”(Eph 4:11) These people mean office bears of church primarily and comprehensively.  Paul used the word, “give” in these verses. Do you know what it means? Servers in church are not only the people who church assigned. The duties in church are the gifts of God that Christ has given to church. In v.12 God wants to build up his people, the body of Christ through these.

 

If so, how can office bears build up Christians?

 

Today’s words tell two things.

First, to let them reach unity. “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”(Eph 4:13)  “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”(Eph 4:3) Different people with different disposition gather as church. Can Jewish and Gentile be unified? Can believers and non-believers be? Can the intelligent and the ignorant be? Can judges and ex-convicts be? Can the old lady who picks recyceled materials to earn $2 a day and the old lay who carries the handbag worth of $2000 be?  To reach unity seems something impossible. In fact we don’t want to live so. But Paul says we have to make every effort to keep the unity. Why? “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called.”(Eph 4:4) It’s because of one body. In other words, it’s because we became one body in Christ. And it’s because we received one Spirit. There is not bigger Spirit in universe. No matter how rich or poor, intelligent or ignorant, male or female, old or young they are, to every person who believes in Christ has been attached with the bond of peace from common Spirit. I hope you remember that you and I have been attached with the bond of peace from Holy Spirit.

  Do you have the unity of Holy Spirit? Do you make efforts to keep unity with others? When something negative arises in your mind like ‘He is so selfish’, ‘She is really timid’, ‘He is hot-blooded’, ‘I can’t communicate with her at all’, ‘He is so rude,’ how can you solve this? Sometimes it happens to me, too. I’m distressed. At that time, I try to discover myself who judge others by the criticizing standard. And then I teach myself that I am the very person should be judged and I am not the righteous one but one of the saved people. However, sometimes it doesn’t work. In case of that I try to accept what others are as mine. It’s not easy. I should go through the inner conflicts. I pray for extending the capacity of my acceptance.

 

   Francis Shaeffer said that “Before this world see the reality of unity of true Christians, it is hard to expect that the world believes that Father has sent His Son, and the assertion of Jesus is true, and Christianity is true.”

 

   The unity of Christian is not only the key of church growth but also the milestone of Christianity identity and the unique and only proof of Trinity’s Works. I hope you make efforts to keep unity. 

 

Second, to let them growth up to Christ. In v.13 “… to attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Why Christians grow to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ? The standards seem too high. But there is rational reason. It’s to help Christians not to be spiritual children.  “Then we will no linger be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.”(Eph 4:14) Whoever lives in faith for the first time is spiritual infant. Everything he realizes seems all of his faith. Unless someone helps him, the growth will stop all of a sudden. 

 

My oldest son likes robot. The robot named Penta Storm is his favorite.  If someone treat him for that, he wouldn’t hesisite to follow him at all. My second one likes foods so much. When wakes up, his first word is “Mom, rice” instead of Good morning. He wakes his mom if he feels hungry even early in the morning though.  If you attract him with foods, you might make it. Why do they do? It’s because they are young. They are easily distracted by something which seems and feels good. God says that Church grows to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ not to remain spiritual children.

Today the world builds up its reputation. But I hope you believe that Church  should build up the body of Christ to the fullness. There is a unique word in v. 16., ‘every supporting ligament.’  “From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”(Eph 4:16) Organisms which include human being and have live joints can grow through the joints. Church of God does so. Through ministers, office bears, and Christians who believes first and experience His grace, every Christian joined and held together grows and builds up as the body of Christ.

 

The last, the church is built in love.

Even though every Christian admits Christ as the head of church, equips for works of service, and is built up until they reach unity in faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ, there might be no love in church.  The example of this is the church in Ephesus.

“I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found the false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.” (Rev. 2:2-4).

 

   Finally Paul emphasizes love in v.15-16.

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”(Eph 4:15-16) God wants us to grow enough, to know the complete truth in every respect like Christ, and to tell the truth in love. We follow Jesus. He is the origin of everything that we do. He let us walk in step. If his breath and blood flows into and nourishes us, we can grow strong and healthy in God and will be strengthened in love.

The love that Paul mentioned here is the same as the one that John used and the church in Ephesus in Rev. Paul doesn’t mean Eros or platonic love. He means the basic love. It is the one that won’t be changed over time. It is the one God has proved to the whole world on the cross. It is God’s love that any creature can’t copy, Agape.

Paul says speaking the truth in love. We have to hold both of the truth and the love. These two are the partners that always walk in step in church.

 

Recently in the assembly of KOSIN there was an agenda regarding the investigation of heresy of Mr. Kim, John, the representative of a publisher named holy wave plus and Mr. Kim, Yongeui, an itinerant missionary. Some people say it is excessive. They were shocked, too. They have worked hard in their areas sincerely. I think that questioning about their heresy due to their recent words and behaviors not understandable is the behavior that church has decided on focusing on the truth. With the truth no support of love, this kind of event will happen again and Church will keep dividing.

 

Everyone, nothing based on the land is eternal. Something tangible will disappear with time. I believe that Church will last because God put base of it on Christ and hold it to the end until everything will reach unity. Would you work together and build up the FGC, which God called you and me as one through beautifully?

Through you and me the holy body of Christ will be built up completely. God will use us and our church and unify everything in God’s universal reign and plan. So I believe that our church should be built up from above. I bless you to be church which is building up the head of Christ and the body of Christ and built in love.
