* 본 문 : 여호수아 14장 1-5절

* 제 목 : 선교적 교회 - 41. 성도 보통씨의 기업

한국의 한 케이블 TV에서 방영하는 프로그램 중에서 ‘어쩌다 어른’이라는 명사들의 강의를 소개하는 시간이 있습니다. 제목이 독특하고 재미있어서 관심을 가지게 되었고, 재미있는 강의가 있으면 챙겨서 보기도 합니다. 이 프로그램을 방영하기 시작한 지가 벌써 3년 정도 됐습니다. 그동안 많은 강사들이 자신들의 삶과 생각을 풀었습니다. 그 중에서 이런 제목이 있었습니다. ‘어쩌다 어른이 되어 버린 철수 이야기’, ‘어쩌다 어른이 되어버린 영희 이야기’ 제목이 재미있기도 했지만... 생각해보면 가슴이 덜컥 내려앉기도 합니다. 그 철수와 영희의 ‘어쩌다 되어버린’, 준비 없이 되어버린.... 충분히 성장하지 않는 어른으로서의 삶의 이야기가 나의 이야기일 수 있기 때문입니다. 어른인데 어른답지 못한, 부모인데 부모답지 못한... 어쩌다보니... 다들 하니까... 어른이 되고 결혼을 하고 부모가 되었는지도 모릅니다.

요즘 상담학이 많이 소개되면서 ‘성인 아이’라는 단어가 많이 알려졌습니다. ‘성인아이’ 란 이미 신체적으로나 사회적으로 성인이 되었음에도 불구하고 성장하는 과정에서 충분히 정서적, 인지적 지지를 받지 못한 이유로 어린아이의 성향과 행동을 넘어서지 못하는 사람들을 말합니다. 그들은 현재 자신에게 주어진 책임에 적응을 하지 못하고 관계를 견디지 못할 때가 많습니다. 쉽게 상처를 주고받으며 관계를 깨뜨립니다. 그렇다고 해서 모든 부분이 아이라는 말은 아닙니다. 삶의 대부분의 영역에서는 어른으로서의 역할을 감당하고 있지만 아직도 해결되지 않은 어린 시절의 문제들이 삶에서 나타나거나 지배할 때를 말합니다. 알고 보면 누구에게나 아주 조금씩은 남아 있는 성장 시기의 상처들을 해석하고 이해하는 하나의 방법이라고 보면 됩니다.

1. 어쩌다 성도...?

하지만 ‘어쩌다 어른....’의 고민을 신앙의 영역으로 끌어오면 조금 깊이 생각할 것이 있습니다. 흔히들 미국으로 이민을 오면 제일 먼저 가야하는 곳이 교회이고 그 다음은 은행이라고 말합니다. 물론 요즘은 조금 다르기는 하지만 이민 사회에서는 보편적으로 맞는 이야기입니다. 우리는 성도이고 혹은 직분자이기는 한데 미국에 이민 와서 살다보니 여기까지 온 것일 수도 있습니다.

저처럼 모태신앙의 경우는 더욱 그렇습니다. 태어나보니 목사의 아들이고 어려서부터 교회에서만 자랐습니다. 잠시 군대 3년, 공군 장교로 출퇴근을 하며 직장 생활 맛을 잠시 본 것을 제외하고는 늘 공부하고 책 읽고 책상에 앉아서 글과 말을 준비하는 삶을 살았습니다. 그렇게 어느새 50년이 지났습니다. 어려서부터 목사가 된다고 말해왔고, 지금 목사로서의 삶에 불만은 없습니다. 다만... 좀 걱정되는 것은 있습니다. 혹시 나의 신앙도, 그리고 목회자로서의 삶도 ‘어쩌다...’에 해당되는 것은 아닐까요...? 한 번도 교회 밖으로 나간 일이 없고, 목사 아닌 다른 길을 생각한 적이 없는.... 성도가 되고, 목사가 되고, 너무도 당연히 교회를 개척하고 목회를 하고 있습니다. 다른 길을 가지 않아서 그 길을 알지 못하고, 이 길만 걸어서 참 당연하기는 한데... 혹시 나는 어쩌다... 성도, 어쩔 수 없이 목사는 아닐까? 내 믿음은 어쩌다 믿음은 아닐까? 이 길을 걷고, 이 삶을 살고, 이 믿음대로 살기 위해서 디뎌보고 경험하고 고민해야 할 많은 발걸음들이 있을텐데... 그 모든 것을 생략한 채 나는 그저 옳은 줄로만 알고 이 삶을 살고 있는 것은 아닐까.... 고민하게 됩니다.

2. 기업이란...?

그래서 요즘 제가 자신에게 던지는 질문이 있습니다. “내 삶은 하나님이 내게 주신 기업(heritage)인가?” 하는 것입니다. 특별히 목회자라는 사명에 관해서 그렇습니다. 이것을 ‘소명’(calling)이라고 말씀드리지 않는 이유는 흔히들 목회자들에게만 ‘소명’이 있는 것으로 오해하기 때문입니다. 그래서 ‘기업’인가?라고 묻습니다. 목회자만 특별하게 부름 받는 것이 아니라 우리들 모두가 하나님의 자녀이면서 각자의 삶에 대한 사명자이기 때문입니다. 하나님은 우리들 모두에게 경작하고 가꾸며 성장시키고 열매 맺어야 하는 각자의 삶을 주셨습니다. 성경은 이것을 ‘기업’이라고 말합니다. 회사를 말하는 것이 아니라 각자의 삶에 허락하신 하나님의 은혜를 말하는 것입니다. 살아가는 삶의 터전이 기업입니다. 이스라엘에게는 가나안 땅을 기업으로 주셨고, 아브라함에게는 자신의 삶이 복의 근원이 되는 기업을 주셨습니다.

여기서 우리는 성경이 말하는 두 가지 종류의 기업을 발견할 수 있습니다. 첫째 기업은 오늘 본문에서 말하는 것처럼 ‘땅’을 말합니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 이전에는 땅이 없었습니다. 그들의 조상은 팔레스타인의 유목민이었고, 애굽의 노예가 되었습니다. 그런데 하나님께서 때가 되어 불러내십니다. 가나안땅을 그들의 기업으로 주셨습니다. 그들이 만든 땅이 아니라 하나님이 주신 땅입니다. 그래서 기업에는 주권이 있습니다. 가나안 땅의 주권은 누구에게 있을까요? 그 땅은 그들에게 허락되었지만 그들의 것은 아닙니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘에게 안식년과 희년을 주시고 땅을 원래 기업으로 받은 가족에게 돌려주도록 법을 정하신 것은 사람이 하나님이 주시는 기업의 주인이 될 수 없기 때문입니다. 오직 하나님만이 기업에 대한 주권을 가지고 계십니다.

두 번째 기업은 사람입니다. 우리가 하나님을 믿을 때 하나님의 기업이 됩니다. 성경은 이스라엘이 하나님의 기업이라고 말합니다. 시편 127편에서는 “보라 자식들은 여호와의 기업이요 태의 열매는 그의 상급이로다”(시 127:3)라고 말하기도 합니다. 자녀가 하나님이 주신 기업입니다. 자녀의 삶을 하나님의 말씀과 뜻으로 경작하과 가꾸어야 할 책임이 부모에게 있습니다. 부모의 뜻과 소원이 아닙니다. 자녀는 하나님이 주신 것이요 주권은 하나님에게 있습니다. 이스라엘이 하나님이 주신 기업이요, 우리의 가정이 하나님이 주신 기업이요, 그리고 우리가 섬기는 교회가 하나님이 주신 기업입니다. 하나님의 말씀과 뜻으로 경작하고 가꾸어야 할 의무가 우리에게 있습니다.

3. 기업으로 살아가기

사람이 하나님의 기업이요, 허락하신 땅이 하나님이 주신 기업입니다. 따라서 기업이란 하나님의 사람에게 허락하신 하나님의 은혜이자 선물이라 말할 수 있습니다. 그렇다면 오늘날 우리에게는 무엇이 기업이 될 수 있을까요? 당연히 사람으로서의 우리 자신이자 가정이자 교회입니다. 그리고 소산을 일굴 땅으로서의 우리의 직장이면서 비즈니스입니다. 이 모든 것은 하나님이 우리를 위해 주신 것이면서 하나님의 주권 아래 있습니다. 소위 ‘성직’(聖職)이라고 말하는 목회자만 그런 것이 아니라 하나님의 자녀되고 나라되고 백성된 우리들 모두가 그렇습니다.

오늘 우리가 읽은 여호수아 본문에서 태어나 보니 노예였고, 광야를 헤매고 있었고, 그리고 단 한 번도 자신의 땅에서 가정을 위해 소산을 일궈본 적이 없는 이스라엘 백성들을 하나님은 영원한 기업으로 삼으시고, 그들에게 기업으로서의 가나안땅을 허락하십니다. 이제 그들은 하나님의 나라가 되어 하나님이 허락하신 땅에서 은혜와 영광의 삶을 살아갈 일만 남았습니다. 너무 감격스럽고 감사한 일입니다. 그렇게 살면 되지 않겠습니까? 하지만 그게 그리 쉽지 않습니다.

첫째, 가나안 땅에는 이미 그 땅에 거주하고 있는 사람들이 있었습니다. 여호수아 3장에서 7장에는 일곱족속으로 구별되는 가나안의 원주민들이 있었다고 말합니다. 우리가 자주 성경을 통해서 만나는 헷 족속, 가나안 족속, 여부스 족속, 기르가스 족속, 아모리 족속, 히위 족속, 브리스 족속을 말합니다. 그들은 이스라엘이 가나안에 들어서기 전 수백년 동안 그 땅에서 살고 있었습니다. 하나님이 주신 땅인데... 그 땅에 다른 사람들이 살고 있습니다. 하나님이 주신 기업이라고 했는데.... 그 기업에 들어가서 살기에는 먼저 뿌리내리고 살고 있는 소위 7족속 원주민들의 완강한 저항이 있다는 것입니다. 하나님은 이스라엘에게 그들을 하나님이 기업으로 주신 땅에서 몰아내고 하나님의 기업이 되는 나라를 이루라고 명령하셨습니다. 이스라엘은 이 일에 성공할까요? 일부 성공하고 또 실패했습니다. 그들은 이스라엘이라는 나라를 세우는데 성공했지만 원주민들을 완전히 몰아내는데는 실패합니다. 결국 원주민들의 섬기던 우상을 함께 섬기며 세상을 닮아갑니다. 세상을 교회로 바꾸는데 실패합니다. 그들이 세상이 되고 말았고 세상에 결국 정복당합니다.

하지만 원주민들의 완강한 저항 - 그것만으로 이스라엘의 실패를 다 설명할 수 없습니다. 원주민들의 저항보다 더 큰 문제는 그들 자신에게 있었습니다. 그들 스스로가 하나님의 기업으로서의 확신이 부족했습니다. 기업으로 주신 땅에 대한 사명이 부족했습니다. 그들은 적당히 먹고 살만한 지경이 되자 원주민과 타협했고, 하나님의 기업으로서의 그들의 소명을 잊었습니다. 하나님이 기업으로 주신 땅에서 하나님의 기업으로 사는 일에 실패한 가장 큰 원인은 그들 자신에게 있습니다.

이 원리는 오늘날도 크게 다르지 않습니다. 하나님은 성도를, 우리의 가정을, 교회를 하나님의 기업이라 말씀합니다. 그리고 우리에게 경작할 ‘땅’을 기업으로 주셨습니다. 하나님의 기업이 된 사람들이 하나님이 기업으로 주신 땅을 일구며 살아야 합니다. 감사로 살고 은혜로 살아야 합니다. 그런데 오늘 우리는 하나님이 주신 기업이 즐겁지 않습니다. 하나님의 기업으로서의 내 삶이 즐겁지 않고, 기업으로 허락하신 가정과 교회가 즐겁지 않고, 기업으로 허락하신 관계들이 즐겁지 않습니다. 하나님이 허락하신 기업으로서의 직장이 즐겁지 않고 비즈니스가 즐겁지 않습니다. 어쩌다보니 믿음은 있는데 믿음으로 살지 못하고, 어쩌다보니 직분은 있는데 영광스럽지가 않고, 어쩌다보니 이렇게 성도가 되고 교회가 되었는데 감사하지가 않습니다. 어쩌다보니... 어쩌다보니... 이렇게 매일매일 같은 삶을 반복하며 살고 있습니다.

4. 기업의 영광, 기업의 기쁨

성도 여러분, 저는 우리 자신이 하나님이 기업이요, 가장과 교회가 기업이요. 우리에게 주신 직장이 하나님이 주신 기업이라는 생각에는 변함이 없습니다. 당연하고 맞는 말이면서 참 감사한 일입니다. 하지만 이 삶이 하나님이 주신 기업이라면, 내 것이 아니라 하나님이 주신 것이라면... 그래서 언젠가 하나님께서 다시 돌아보시고 회복하실 영역이라면.... 좀 더 진지하게, 좀 더 고민하고, 좀 더 열심히, 그리고 좀 더 감사하면서 살아야겠다고 생각합니다. 나처럼 자격 없는 사람을 하나님의 기업을 섬길 수 있는 사명자로 부르신 것에 감사하며 최선을 다해야겠습니다. 살아가다보니 세월의 파도 끝에서 바다로, 뭍으로 밀려들었다가 나가기를 반복하는 삶이 아니라... 부르심이 있고, 주권이 있고, 방향이 있고, 가치중심이 있는 삶을 살아야겠습니다. 내 삶이 하나님이 허락하신 기업이므로... 언젠가 하나님 앞에서 펼쳐 보이며 이렇게 허락하신 기업을 최선을 다해서 섬겼노라고 말할 수 있는 삶을 살아야겠습니다. ‘어쩌다 내 인생...’이 아닌, ‘그러므로 하나님의 기업’으로 내 삶을 경작해야겠습니다.

그래서 최근에 저는 중요한 일 하나를 시작했습니다. 제가 조금 전까지 말씀을 나눈, ,너무도 옳고 감사한 이야기.... 우리를 기업으로 삼으신 하나님의 뜻, 우리에게 기업을 허락하신 하나님의 계획에 감사하면서.... 그러나 왜 우리의 삶에 기업의 영광이 없을까? 우리의 삶에 기업의 기쁨이 없을까? 매일 반복되는 삶에 허덕이며 지쳐서 적당하게 가나안과 타협하면서 살고 있는 것을 아닐까...? 생각하고 또 고민합니다. 책상 앞에서가 아니라 제 삶으로, 발로 고민합니다. 하나님이 허락하신 이 귀한 말씀을 여러분의 삶의 현장에 좀 더 깊이, 가까이 전하기 위해서 여러분과 같은 눈높이, 같은 마음, 같은 땀을 흘리면서 우리의 삶에 임하시는 하나님의 섭리와 뜻을 깨닫고 알고 전하기를 원해서입니다. 아침부터 저녁까지 노동하면서 왜 이스라엘 백성들은 가나안의 저항을 이기지 못했고, 그들의 마음으로부터 시작된 유혹과 시험을 이기지 못했던가를 경험하고 생각하고 이해하고 그리고 답을 찾고자 합니다. 제가 이 일을 시작하면서 던진 첫 번째 질문을 오늘 여러분과 함께 나누었습니다. 그 질문이 무엇인지 아시겠습니까? 우리의 삶은 하나님이 주신 기업인가? 하는 것입니다. 우리의 가정, 우리의 교회... 그리고 우리가 매일 세상과 만나는 우리의 직장... 그저 생계의 수단에 불과하고 살다보니 어쩌다보니 얻은 관계와 상황에 불과한 것입니까? 아니면 하나님이 우리에게 은혜와 복으로 주신 기업입니까? 나는 하나님의 목적과 가치에 일치하는 기업으로서의 삶을 살고 있습니까? 끊임없이 묻고 중심으로 대답하고자 합니다.

               There is a Korean TV show named “No Way I’m an Adult” which introduces a lecture by some famous people. The title is unique and interesting, so I'm interested in and watching it. It's been around three years since it started. In the meantime, many instructors have talked their lives and thoughts. The title, 'The story of ordinary man/woman who became an adult’ is fun, but I have a feeling of my heart sinks. That's because the story of life as an adult who does not grow up enough can be my story. I'm an adult but I'm not likely to be. I'm a parent, but I’m not likely to be. I’m not sure, but I do as others become an adult, marry, and be parents.

               With the introduction of many counseling, the word 'Adult child' has been widely known. 'Adult child' refers to those who, despite being already physically and socially adult, fails to transcend their child's temperament and behavior because of their inadequate emotional and cognitive support during their growth process. They often fail to adapt to the responsibilities given to them and can not tolerate them. They easily give and take broken hearts and break relationships. That does not mean that everything is a child. In most areas of life they do their roles as adults, but it happens when their childhood issues hinder their lives or over control them. It is a way of interpreting and understanding the wounds of the growing period that remain a little to anyone.

1. 어쩌다 성도...?

             However, we have to think over and deeply when I bring the troubles of “No Way I’m an Adult” into the realm of faith. It is often said that the first place to go when you immigrate to the United States is the church and then the bank. Of course, these days there is some difference, but it is usually true in immigrant society. We are christians, but we may have come here as immigrants in America. 

               It’s more true in the case of the person was born a christians like me. When I was born, I was the son of a pastor. I spent most of time in church my childhood. I have been studying, reading books, and preparing for writing and speech except for a short while I commuted to the Air Force for three years. It has been 50 years. I have been told that I will be a pastor from my youth, and I am not dissatisfied with my life as pastor. But there is something to worry about. Does my faith and my life as a pastor maybe correspond to 'by chance'? I have never been out of the church and have never thought of a way other than a pastor. I become a christian, a pastor. I pioneer church and do ministry, of course. I do not know the other ways because I have not experienced, but I am walking on this road. I wonder whether I’m the pastor by chance, and my faith is so. It seems that there are many steps to experience and worry for walking this way, and living this life according to this faith, I wonder if I might omit all, and I just live thinking that I am on the right track.

2. 기업이란...?

               So nowadays I have a question for myself. "Is my life the heritage that God has given me?" This is especially true of the mission of pastors. This is why I do not call it "calling" because it is often misunderstood that there is only a "calling" to pastors. That's why it's a heritage. It is not only the pastor who is called specifically, but also all of us are children of God and a missionary to their lives. God has given each of us our own life to cultivate, grow and bear fruit. The Bible says it a "heritage." It is not a company, but the grace of God that is given to each person's life. It is the base of living life. He gave the Israelites the land of Canaan as an heritage, and Abraham his life as the heritage of a source of blessing.

               Here we can find two kinds of heritage in the Bible. The first one refers to 'the land' as it says in the today passage. The Israelites had no land before. Their ancestors were nomads of Palestine and became slaves to Egypt. But God calls them in due time. He gave them the land of Canaan as their heritage. It is not the land they made but the land God gave them. So there is sovereignty in the heritance. Who is the sovereignty of the land of Canaan? The land was granted to them, but not theirs. God gave the Israel a sabbatical year and a jubilee year, and made the law that give it back to the original owner had received as their heritage. It is because man can not be the owner of the heritage that God has given. Only God has sovereignty over the heritage.

               The second one is people. When we believe in God, we become an heritage of God. The Bible says that Israel is an heritage of God. Psalm Ch. 127 says, "Behold, the children are the heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward" (Psalm 127:3). Children are God-given heritage. Parents have a responsibility to cultivate and care for the lives of their children with God’s Word and will. They are not the wish and desire of the parents. Children are given by God, and the sovereignty is in God. Israel is a heritage given by God, our family is a heritage given by God, and the church that we serve is a heritage given by God. We have an obligation to cultivate and care for them with God's Word and will.

3. 기업으로 살아가기

               Man is the heritage of God, and the land he has given is the heritage of God. Therefore, a heritage can be said to be the grace and gift of God that is given to the person of God. So what can be a heritage for us today? Of course it can be us ourselves as a person, a family, and a church. And it can be our workplace and  business as a place to make gains. All of them are given by God for us and under the sovereignty of God. It is not only the pastor who calls the so-called "priesthood", but all of us who are children of God and His nation and His people.

               In today’s passage from book of Joshua God made the Israelites who were born as slaves, wandered in the wilderness, and never had a land to make gains for their families an eternal heritage and allowed them the land of Canaan. Now they have to become the nation of God and live the life of grace and glory in the land which God has given them. It is so thrilled and thankful. Can they live like that? But that is not so easy.

               First, there were people who were already living in the land of Canaan. Joshua Ch.3 to 7 say that there were indigenous peoples of Canaan, who were divided into seven tribes. It refers to the Hittites, Canaanites, Jebusites, Girgashites, Amorites, Hivites, and Perizzites. They lived in the land for hundreds of years before Israel entered Canaan. It is the land God gave them, but there are others in the land. It is said that it is a heritage given by God. There is a stubborn resistance of the so-called Seven Native people who are rooted and live first to live in the heritage. God commanded Israel to take them out of the land God gave them as an heritage and to become a nation as God's heritage. Will Israel succeed in this? Some have succeeded, but some failed. They have succeeded in setting up a nation called Israel, but they failed to drive out the natives completely. In the end, they serve the idols that the natives served and assimilated into the world. They fail to turn the world into a church. They have become the world, and been conquered by he world finally.

               But the stubborn resistance of the natives - that alone can not account for Israel's failure. The problem which was greater than the resistance of the natives was in themselves. They themselves lacked confidence in God's heritage. Thy did not have a mission for the land given as a heritage. They compromised with the natives when they were enough to live on and forgot their calling as a heritage of God. The greatest cause of their failure to live as a heritage of God in the land is their own.   

               This principle is not so different today. God says that we christians, our family, and the churches are the heritages of God. And he gave us the land to cultivate as a heritage. Those who have become heritages of God must live and work in the land that God has given them as a heritage. We have to live with thanksgiving and grace. But we are not pleased by the God-given heritage today. My life as a heritage of God is not pleasant, the family and church allowed as a heritage are not pleasant, and the relationships given to my heritage are not fun. Jobs and business as a heritage allowed by God are not fun. I can not live by faith even though I have it. I can’t be honored even though I have a duty. I am a christian and a church, but I am not grateful. I just drift into the life and repeat it everyday.    

4. 기업의 영광, 기업의 기쁨

               Everyone, I maintain that we are heritage of God, our family and church are heritage, and the workplace given to us is a heritage given by God. It’s true and right and very grateful to us. But if this life is a heritage given by God, not mine, so if it is the area where God will look back and restore it someday, I think we should live more seriously, more agonizing, and more gratefully. I will do my best to thank God for calling me, an unqualified person as a minister to serve God's heritage. Not a life that I repeat drifting into the waves of the time, but I have to live a life with a calling, sovereignty, direction, and value. Because my life is the heritage given by God, I will live a life that one day opened to God and can be said the I have served the heritage with my best. I must cultivate my life as 'the heritage of God' rather than 'by chance'.  

               So recently I have started one important thing. I think that I thank God for the will of God, who made us His heritage, and the plan of God that allowed us heritages, but worry about no honor of heritage in our lives. Is not there a glory of it? Is not there pleasure of heritage in our lives? Is it because we live a repetitive, and drifting, and tired life every day and compromise with Canaan properly? I think over and worry. I worry about it with my life and my feet, not at my desk. I want to realize and know and preach God's providence and will in our lives by sweating as you with the same heart and the same view as yours in order to bring this precious Word of God to you deeper and closer, Working from morning to evening, I want to experience and think and understand why Israelites could not overcome the resistance of Canaan and the temptations and tests started from their hearts and find the answers. I shared the first question that I had when I began this work with you today.  Do you know what that question is? Is our life a heritage given by God? Our family, our church and our workplace where we meet with the world every day, are they nothing but a relationship and a situation that we get from as a livelihood? Or are they heritages given by God with grace and blessings? Do I live a life that is consistent with God's purpose and value? We will constantly ask and answer in the heart.
