* 제 목 : 선교적 교회 - 42. 성도 보통씨의 기업(2)

한 때 목사님들이 전도의 방법을 소개하면서 ‘목적론적 전도’라는 말을 사용한 적이 있습니다. 제가 중고등학교를 다닐 때 부흥집회를 참석하면 자주 듣게 되는 말씀이었습니다. 내용은 이렇습니다. 급하게 가방을 매고 달려가는 한 청년에게 전도자가 묻습니다. “지금 어디를 그렇게 급하게 가는 것입니까?” “아, 예... 전철을 타려구요... 늦으면 안되니까요.” “전철을 타면 어디로 가시나요?” “네, 학교에 갑니다.” “학교에 가면 무엇을 하나요?” “공부를 하지요.” “공부해서 무엇 하나요?” “좋은 직장에 들어가지 않겠습니까?” “좋은 직장에 들어가서 뭐하나요?” “장가도 가고.... 애도 낳고...” “그리고는 무엇을 하나요...” “뭐... 자녀들과 행복하게 살겠지요.” “그래서요...?” “나이도 들고 손주도 낳고...” “그래서요...?” “뭐 늙겠지요...” “그러면요....?” “뭐...병도 들고... 언젠가는 죽겠지요.” “그렇군요. 당신은 그러면 지금 죽으려고 그렇게 달려가는 것이군요!”

그래서 청년에게 인생의 궁극적인 종착점이 죽음과 지옥이 아닌 천국에서의 영원한 생명으로 가는 길을 소개하면 된다는 것이었습니다. 참 맞는 말처럼 생각되었지만 실제로 한 번도 써보지는 못했습니다. 아마 여러분 중에서도 비슷한 이야기를 들은 분들이 있을 겁니다. 이 이야기의 끝에 나온 가스펠송이 바로 “예수 믿으세요!”입니다. “당신은 지금 어디로 가나요? 발걸음 가볍게... ”로 시작하는 찬양을 박수치면서 참 많이 불렀었습니다.

이 이야기는 재미있기는 하지만 뚜렷한 약점이 있습니다. 논리적인 비약이 너무 심하고 상대방을 기분 나쁘게 할 가능성이 많고 한번 이 이야기를 듣고 나면 아마 두 번째 전도를 당하면 화를 내기 쉽습니다. 무엇보다도 실제로 이렇게 원하는 대답을 딱딱 해주는 사람을 만나기가 어렵습니다. 다만... 굳이 이 전도의 좋은 점을 찾는다면.... 우리는 중요한 한 가지를 발견할 수 있습니다. 우리는 참 열심히 살고 있지만, 그 무엇인가를 하면서 성실하게, 열정적으로, 열심히 살고 있지만 그것으로 만족할 수는 없다는 것입니다. 문제는 그 열심에 있는 것이 아니라 ‘열심의 목적’에 있습니다. 무엇을 위해 우리는 그렇게 열심히, 최선을 다해서 살고 있을까요?

한 때 ‘목적이 있는 삶’(Purpose Driven Life)와 ‘목적이 있는 교회’(Purpose Drive Church)가 필독 도서였습니다. 이 책들이 교회와 성도들에게 충격을 준 이유가 있습니다. 대부분 교회와 성도들이 열심히 믿기는 한데... 최선을 다해서 헌신하고 있기는 한데... 무엇을 위해서 그 열심과 헌신을 발휘하는지에 대한 질문에는 머뭇거리기 쉽기 때문입니다. 그래서 릭워렌 목사의 이 책들은 한국 교회에서 가장 크게 히트를 쳤습니다. 우리의 삶에 목적이 있는가? 내가 하고 있는 이 헌신과 봉사의 궁극적인 목적은 무엇인가? 의외로 이 대답을 솔직하게 하기는 쉽지가 않습니다. 여러분은 어떠십니까?

1. 사도 바울의 세 가지 확신

가끔 목회자도 상처를 받을 때가 있습니다. 당연히 성도들로부터 받습니다. 충분히 알고 이해하고 있는 것은 성도들이 목회자의 마음에 상처 남기는 일을 의도하지는 않는다는 겁니다. 하지만... 다양한 상황에서, 복잡한 관계 속에서 깊은 상처가 되는 일들이 있습니다. 고민하고 우울해집니다. 나의 진심이 전달되지 않는 것 같고, 열심이 거절되는 것 같습니다. 어느 목사님의 고백처럼.... 수백 번 이 길이 맞는지를 저 자신에게 묻고, 수천 번 그만 두는 것이 옳지 않을까를 고민합니다. 그렇게 저는 여기까지 30년 가까이 목회자라를 직분으로 살고 있습니다.

그러면 어떻게 할까요? 상처받는 일이 있고, 고민하는 일이 있습니다. 그렇게 살고 잊고 참고 지내면 되는 것일까요? 오늘 본문을 보면 사도 바울은 저와는 비교할 수 없는 큰 고통을 당합니다. 생명을 걸고 복음을 전했고, 그 결과 지금은 감옥에 갇혀 있는데... 그것을 오히려 기뻐하는 성도들이 있습니다. 바울이 사도라는 사실을 부정하고 그의 선교의 사역을 부정하고 그리고 그가 세운 이방인들의 교회를 부정합니다. 참 괴롭고 힘든 일입니다. 세상으로부터 당하는 공격은 고난이고 십자가일 수 있는데, 함께 교회를 위해 헌신해야 하는 성도들로부터 받는 공격은 딱히 해석하기도 힘들고 견디기는 더 힘들 수 있습니다. 이 때 바울은 아주 신앙적이고 지혜로운 선택을 합니다. 그는 세 가지 자기 안에 있은 확신을 전합니다.

첫째 자신을 성도와 사도로 부르신 이를 정확하게 아는 것입니다. 나를 부르신 분은 하나님입니다. 교회와 성도들이 얼마나 나를 사도로 인정하는가보다 중요하고 앞서는 문제입니다. 내가 하나님을 선택한 것이 아니라 하나님이 나를 부르셨습니다. 두 번째 그는 하나님이 자신을 부르신 목적을 압니다. 사도 바울은 16절에서 착한 뜻으로 복음을 전하는 선교의 동지들은 바울 자신이 ‘복음을 변증하기 위하여 세우심을 받은 줄 안다’고 했습니다. 복음을 설명하고 가르치고 전파하는 일 - 그것이 바울을 부르신 하나님의 목적입니다. 세 번째 바울은 스스로 믿고 있는 삶의 목적이 있습니다. 21절에서 고백합니다. “이는 내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익함이라”(빌 1:21) 그는 자신의 삶을 통해서 드러나고 나타나고 증거되는 예수 그리스도를 사모합니다. 자신의 삶의 형편이 어떠하든 그는 오직 예수 그리스도를 생각합니다.

2. 정서를 지배하는 것

이 세 가지 확신은 사도 바울의 정서를 지배합니다. 그래서 바울은 18절 하반절에서 “이로써 나는 기뻐하고 또한 기뻐하리라”라고 고백합니다. 어떻게 감옥에 있고, 사람들의 오해와 조롱과 질투의 대상이 되는 바울이 기뻐하고 또 기뻐할 수 있을까요? 18절 상반절에 보면 “무슨 방도로 하든지 전파되는 것은 그리스도니”라고 했습니다. 바울이 기뻐할 수 있었던 이유는 자신을 부르시고 자신의 삶의 목적이 되시고 자신의 삶에 목적을 주시는 예수 그리스도에게 있습니다. 예수가 전파되는 것을 보니 내 삶의 형편과 조건이 어떠하든지,.... 나는 감사하고 기뻐할 수 있다는 것입니다. 바울의 정서를 지배하는 것은 자신을 향한 하나님의 목적입니다.

그렇다면 성도 여러분, 묻고 싶습니다. 지난 한 주간 여러분의 정서... 즉 기분을 지배하는 것은 무엇인가요? 여러분은 무엇에 의해 참 기분이 좋았다가, 무엇 때문에 기분이 나빠지시나요? 무엇 때문에 슬퍼하고 무엇 때문에 기뻐하시나요? 스트레스의 주된 원인은 무엇이고 즐거움의 원인은 무엇일까요?

특별히 저는 10주 정도 성도 여러분들에게 허락하신 기업에 대한 말씀을 나누려고 합니다. 지난 한 주간 우리는 참 열심히 일하면서 살았습니다. 하나님이 주신 시간을 경작하고 그 열매로 가정이 살고 헌금하고 내가 원하는 일을 합니다. 어떻습니까? 한 주간 감사와 즐거움이 있었습니까? 아니면 힘들고 어려웠습니까? 무엇에 대해 기뻐하고 무엇에 대해 힘들어하셨습니까? 대부분 우리는 이익과 경쟁에 대해 말합니다. 장사는 잘되어야 하고, 직장에서는 인정받고 진급해야 합니다. 학교에서는 우수한 학생이어야 합니다. 나는 잘해야 하고 잘되어야 합니다. 오죽하면 ‘잘되는 나!’라는 책이 베스트셀러가 되겠습니까? 그렇다면.... 잘하지 않고 잘되지 않으면 감사도 없고 기쁨도 없고 살 가치도 없는 것일까요? 사업이 잘 안되고, 공부를 잘 못하고, 사회적으로 성공하고 명예를 얻지 못하면... 나는 기쁨과 감사에서 제외된 삶을 살아야 하는 것일까요? 지난 달 열렸던 저희 교단 총회에 모였던 120여명의 목회자들 중에서 교회가 재정적으로 자립하고 행정적으로나 사역적으로 규모있는 목회를 하는 목회자들은 1/4도 채 되지 않습니다. 목회자들에게 허락하신 기업이 교회이자 성도들이라고 할 때.... 그렇다면 3/4의 목회자들은 늘 불행해하고 슬퍼해야 하는 것일까요?

3. 하나님의 나라, 세상과 만나다.

하나님은 성도들 각자의 기업을 통해서 하나님의 나라와 세상을 만나게 하십니다. 우리의 직업, 우리의 일터는 하나님의 나라의 백성으로서의 내가 세상을 만나는 통로입니다. 한번 따라해 봅시다. “우리의 일터는 하나님의 나라의 백성이 세상을 만나는 통로입니다.” 사도 바울이 선교지에서, 장막을 짓던 일터에서, 심지어 감옥에서 세상을 만납니다. 그는 로마의 왕족들과 귀족들에게까지 복음을 전합니다. 세상을 교회로 바꾸는 일을 세상과 교회의 접점에서 부지런히 감당하고 있는 것입니다. 직업이 중요하지 않습니다. 바울 또한 때로는 교사였다가 선교사였다가 장막을 만드는 일도 했습니다. 얼마나 크고 번성하는가 하는 것이 중요한 것이 아닙니다. 바울은 예수를 믿지 않을 때가 오히려 더 유명했고, 성공했습니다. 중요한 것은 나의 직업의 종류나 일터의 크기, 만들어내는 이익의 수준에 있는 것이 아닙니다. 중요한 것은 하나님의 나라에 속한 하나님의 사람인 내가 세상을, 세상에 속한 사람들을 어떤 방식으로 어떻게 만나고 있는가 하는 것입니다.

제가 요즘 성도 여러분들의 삶을 직접 삶으로 배우기 위해서... 일을 좀 합니다. 조금 전에 제가 했던 말이 삶의 현장에서 얼마나 효과적으로 실천할 수 있는지를 경험하고 싶어서 자원해서 하는 일입니다. 그리고 깨닫는 것이 있습니다. 그게.... 참 힘들다는 것입니다. 뭐가 힘든가 하면... 저는 조금 전에 제가 드린 말씀을 여러분께 자주했었습니다. 많은 성도와 교회들에서 같은 말을 했었습니다. 우리가 사는 삶, 직장과 가정과 학교와 사회적 관계는 하나님의 나라로서의 성도가 세상으로서의 이웃을 만나는 통로가 된다고 했습니다. 그 통로를 통해서 만나는 이웃들에게 하나님 나라를 전하고 그들을 세상에서 하나님의 나라로 바꾸는 일이 우리의 사명이라고 말입니다. 이 말은 참 옳고 바른 말입니다. 그런데 그게 말이지요... 교회 안에서만 아멘인 것 같았습니다. 고개는 끄덕이는데 삶은 움직이지 않는 것 같았습니다. 왜 그럴까...? 그게 그렇게 어려운가....?

그런 것 같습니다. 참 어려운 것 같습니다. 몸이 피곤하고 마음이 피곤한데... 내가 하나님이 나에게 주신 기업, 그 기업을 통해서 만나는 세상, 그들을 하나님의 나라로 변화시키는 일, 변화시키기 위해 내가 감당해야 할 십자가.... 이런 주제들을 고민하고 의지를 가지고 실천하기란 참 힘든 것 같습니다. 그래서 예수님의 시대에도 직접 메시야가 이 땅에 오셔서 하나님의 나라를 증거해도.... 그들은 바쁘다고.... 장가가야 하고, 소도 사야 하고, 논과 밭에 나가서 할 일들이 너무 많고... 그리고 좀 쉬어야겠다고.... 즐겨야겠다고.... 메시야를 외면했었습니다.

4. 목적 있는 만남

예수님의 시대에 메시야를 외면했던 그들의 삶의 피곤함과 분주함은 하나님의 용서와 용납 안에 있을까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 예수님은 비유로 말씀하시기를 군대를 보내어서 그 마을을 심판하신다고 했습니다. 우리 주님의 우리를 향하신 만남의 초대를 거절했던 그들은 심판의 대상이 됩니다. 그리고 주님은 제자들을 통해서 교회를 세우셨습니다. 작은 무리들을 세상에 보내어 세상을 교회로, 하나님의 나라로 변화시키는 일을 시작하셨습니다. 사람들만으로 부족함을 아셨기 때문에 성령 하나님을 보내셨습니다. 성도와 교회는 성령 하나님과 더불어 세상을 교회로 만드는 일을 감당해야 합니다. 어디서 말입니까?

본문에서 사도 바울은 자신의 모든 삶의 현장을 허락하신 기업으로 해석합니다. 그의 삶의 현장은 하나님의 나라와 뜻이 증거되는 터전입니다. 그는 그곳에서 세상을 만나고 하나님의 나라를 확장합니다. 그가 교회의 교사일 때도 그랬고, 그가 선교사일 때도 그랬고, 그가 장막 만다는 일을 할 때도 그랬고, 그가 감옥에 있을 때도 그랬습니다. 그는 자신의 삶의 모든 현장에서 ‘목적 있는 만남’을 실천했습니다. 어쩌면 사도 바울이 2000년 전에 먼저 노래했는지도 모릅니다. “우리 만남은 우연이 아니야... 그것은 주님의 목적이 있었어...” 바울은 모든 삶의 현장에서 하나님의 목적이 실현되도록, 자신이 고백하는 사명이 실현되도록 헌신했습니다. 바울의 선교 사역이 성공했을까요? 바울의 사업은 성공했을까요? 바울은 좋은 목회자로 큰 교회를 이루었을까요? 모두 "Nope!"입니다. 지금 바울은 감옥에 있습니다. 그렇다면 바울은 실패한 인생일까요? 역시 "Nope!" 단호하게 "Nope!"입니다. 그는 가장 아름답고 성공적인 삶을 살고 있습니다. 유명해져서입니까? 부자가 되어서 입니까? 많은 것을 성취하고 이루어서입니까? 역시 "Nope!"입니다. 그의 삶을 성공했다고 평가하는 것은 그의 고백에 나타나 있습니다. 그는 기뻐하고 기뻐한다고 했습니다. 왜 그가 기뻐합니까? 자신의 삶을 통해서 예수 그리스도가 나타났기 때문입니다. 그 이름만이 증거되었기 때문입니다. 내가 무엇을 하든, 어떤 삶을 살든.... 나를 통해서 오직 예수 그리스도가 증거되었기 때문에 나는 행복하고, 기쁘고, 감사한 삶을 산다...라고 바울은 고백합니다.

성도 여러분! 저는 여러분의 삶을 구체적으로 알지 못합니다. 다만 오늘 성경이 전하는 사도 바울의 삶을 통해서 우리가 도전받기를 원합니다. 이 도전의 핵심을 한 번 따라해봅시다. ‘세상과의 목적 있는 만남’ - 그렇습니다. 성도와 교회, 우리들은 세상과 목적있는 만남을 해야 합니다. 우리의 목적은 그들을 통해서 이익을 얻고, 잘 살고, 잘 되는데 있는 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 기업이 하나님의 소유이므로, 내 삶이 하나님의 것이므로.... 나는 내게 주어진 시간과 허락하신 기업을 통해서 세상과의 목적 있는 만남을 살아야겠습니다. 비로소 내 삶이 교회가 되고, 나의 시간은 제물이 되며, 나는 제사장, 즉 목회자가 되어 세상을 하나님의 나라로 변화시키는 일을 감당하고 있을 것입니다. 손으로 자신의 가슴을 토닥이면서 다시 한번 따라해 봅시다. “성도와 세상의 목적 있는 만남!” 

There was a time when many pastors used a term “Teleological Evangelism” as a method of evangelism. It was a popular topic when I was in middle school and high school. Here is a brief story to explain what it is. A student is running in a hurry. Someone asks the student, “Where are you headed in such a rush?” The student answers, “I have to catch a train, I will be late if I don’t run.” The person asks again, “Where are you going on that train?” The student replies, “I am going to school.” The person asks, “What do you do at school? The student answers, “I study.” The person then asks, “What do you study for?” The student says, “I can get a good job.” The person asks, “What do you do when you get a good job?” The student answers, “I would get married and have children.” The person continues to ask, “What do you do after that?” The student replies, “I would live happily with my family.” The person asks again, “And then?” The student says, “I will get old and have grandchildren.” The person asks, “And then?” The student answers, “I will get even older.” The person asks again, “What comes after that?” The student replies, “I will die eventually.” Then, finally, the person can state, “That is it! You are running in a rush only to die!”

These series of questions were used to introduce that the ultimate destination of life does not have to be death and hell, but can be an eternal life in heaven. I thought it sounded true, but I never actually tried the method on someone. Maybe some of you have heard similar stories. A gospel song that was made from this story is "Believe in Jesus!" Many times, we sang the song that started as, "Where do you go now? Tread lightly….”

This method of evangelism is interesting but has a distinct weakness. A logic leap is so severe that there is a high possibility of making the other person feel uncomfortable. Also, once you hear this story, it is easy to remember. The person is likely to get angry when they are approached the second time with the same story. Above all, it is difficult to meet someone who would actually answer the way you want. However, we may discover one important thing about this method of evangelism. We live a difficult life, but we live diligently and passionately. Still, we are not satisfied. The problem is not in the diligence, but in the 'purpose of diligence.' For what do we live so diligently and give our best?

“Purpose Driven Life” and “Purpose Drive Church” were once must read books. There are reasons why these books shocked the church and the believers. Although most churches and believers had good faith and were devoted with the best of their ability, they were hesitant to ask questions about their dedication for what they do. These books by Reverend Rick Warren were huge hit among many Korean churches. They asked, “Is there a purpose in our lives? What is the ultimate purpose of this commitment and service?” Surprisingly, it is not easy to be honest with the answer. Can you answer this question?

1. 사도 바울의 세 가지 확신

Sometimes pastors get hurt too. They come from the members of the church. What we know and understand enough is that the believers do not intend to leave a scar on a pastor's heart. However, under various circumstances, there are things that deeply hurt in complicated relationships. At times, I am troubled and depressed. It seems like my sincerity is not delivered and my passion is refused. Like an anonymous pastor's confession, ‘I ask myself if this is the right path a hundred times, and wonder if I should give up a thousand times.’ I have been a minister for 30 years with those thoughts.

What should I do then? Sometimes I get hurt and I worry. Do I just live on and forget it? In today's Scripture, the Apostle Paul is suffering incomparably to that of mine. He had dedicated his life for the Gospel. As a result, he is now in prison. There are fellow believers who are pleased to see Paul in prison. They deny that Paul is an apostle, deny his ministry and mission, and deny the church of the gentiles he has established. It was very difficult for Paul. Attacks from the world can be understood as hardships and suffering. On the other hand, attacks from the believers who are devoted to the church together are hard to interpret and bear. In this time, Paul makes a very faithful and wise choice. He conveys three assurances that are within him.

First, knowing exactly who called for the believers and apostles. The one who called Paul was God. For Paul, this is more important than to be recognized by the church. He did not choose God, but God called him. Second, he knows the purpose God called him for. Apostle Paul said in verse 16 that those who preach the gospel in good will know that Paul himself was "established to prove the gospel." Explain, teach, and preach the Gospel - that is the purpose of God who called Paul. Third, Paul has a purpose in life that he believes. He confesses in verse 21, " For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." He longs for Jesus Christ, who is revealed, manifested, and witnessed through his life. Whatever the circumstances of his life, he only thinks of Jesus Christ.

2. 정서를 지배하는 것

These three convictions dominate the apostle Paul's emotions. So Paul confessed in the second half of verse 18, "By this I shall rejoice and be glad". How can Paul, who is in prison, misunderstood and taunted by jealous people, rejoice? In the first half of verse 18, it was said, "Christ is preached in every way." The reason Paul was able to rejoice is in Jesus Christ, who is the purpose of his life, and who gives the purpose of his life. Seeing the Gospel of Jesus being preached, whatever the conditions of his life was, he could be grateful and rejoice. If this is so, I would like to ask all of you. What were the emotions you felt over the past week? What was it that controlled your mood? What did you feel good about and what did you feel bad about? What were you sad and pleased about? What were the main causes of stress and what caused pleasure?

I want to spend next 10 weeks sharing about the things that God has granted us. We lived and worked diligently for the past week. We cultivate the time God gave us. Through the fruit of our work, we are able to live our daily life. How was it? Are you thankful and joyful? Or was it difficult and tough? What were you happy about and what troubled you? We often talk about profit and competition. Our business should be profitable. We must be recognized at work and move up the hierarchy. We must be good successful students at school. We must do well and we must succeed. If so, is our life not worth it if there is no good and no success? If your business fails, if you drop out of school, and if you do not succeed and become famous, should you live your life without any gratitude and joy? There was a conference of our church’s denomination last month. Of the 120 ministered gathered, only about one-fourth of them were with churches that were financial independent and had decent size to have run missions and ministry. If church and believers are something God has granted to the ministers, should the rest three-fourth ministers be unhappy and sad?

3. 하나님의 나라, 세상과 만나다.

God makes the kingdom of God and the world meet through the mission of each one of the believers. Our work and workplace is the way we meet the world as the people of God's kingdom. Apostle Paul met the world at his ministry field - at the workplace where the tent was built, and even in prison. He even preached the gospel to the royal families and aristocrats of Rome. He was diligently working to change the world into church at the border of the world and church. Jobs are arbitrary. Paul was a teacher, a missionary, and a builder of tents. It does not matter how big and prosperous it is. When Paul did not believe in Jesus, he was more famous and successful. The essential thing is not at the level of the profession, the size of the workplace, or the amount of profit produced. What is important is how we meet the world and the people in it as God's people in the kingdom of God.

I took on a little job recently to learn the lives of the believers in their own lives. I volunteered to experience what I have been saying in my own life to see how well I can practice. I realized something. It is very hard. I used to say to you a while ago. Many believers and churches have said the same thing. Our living, work, home, school, and relationships with others are said to be a pathway through which the people of God meet our neighbors of the world. It is our mission to communicate the kingdom of God to the neighbors who we meet and to bring them into the kingdom of God from the world. This is true and right. But it is difficult. It seemed to be only said in the church. Why is it so difficult to actually practice this message?

Even for me, it is very difficult. I am always very tired. A business that God has granted me, the world I meet through that business, the transformation of those people into the kingdom of God, the cross that I must bear to change… it all seems difficult to actually practice. Even in the days of Jesus, the Messiah came to this world and showed the kingdom of God. Still, people were too busy. They were occupied. They wanted to enjoy the world. They had turned away from the Messiah.

4. 목적 있는 만남

Will God forgive and tolerate those who ignored the Messiah because of their tiredness and distraction in the world? I wouldn’t think so. Jesus said in parables, "God will send an army to punish the city. Those who rejected the invitation of our Lord are subject to judgment. Our Lord built a church through his disciples. He sent a small group of people into the world and began to transform the world into a church and into the kingdom of God. He sent the Holy Spirit because he knew the disciples were inadequate. The believers and the church must work with the Holy Spirit to make the world into a church. But, where?

In the passage, Apostle Paul interprets all of his life's circumstances as a mission that has been granted. The scene of his life is a place where God's kingdom and will are testified. He meets the world and expands the kingdom of God; when he was a preacher in the church, when he was a missionary, when he was building a tent, and when he was in prison. He practiced a 'purposeful encounter' in every aspect of his life. Perhaps Apostle Paul said 2,000 years ago. "Our encounter is no coincidence, it is our Lord's purpose." Paul devoted himself to the fulfillment of his mission so that the purpose of God could be realized in all life's places. Did Paul's mission work succeed? Did Paul's business succeed? Did Paul have a good church as a good pastor? The answers are all "Nope!" Now Paul is in prison. Is Paul a failed life? "Nope!" It is firmly not so. He lives the most beautiful and successful life. Is he famous? Is he rich? Is he accomplishing many things? The answers are again, "Nope!". It is in his confession that he evaluates his life as successful. He said he was happy and pleased. Why is he happy? It is because Jesus Christ appeared through his life. It is because only Christ’s name was witnessed. No matter he does in any life... Paul confesses that he is happy, glad and thankful because only Jesus Christ is witnessed through him.

I do not know your life specifically. However, we want to be challenged through the life of Apostle Paul today. Let's follow the heart of this challenge. “Purposeful encounter with the world.” We have to make a purposeful meeting with the world. Our purpose is not to profit from them, to live well, nor to be good. Because our mission in this world is that of God's own, and our life belongs to God, we must practice a purposeful encounter with the world through the time given to us and the missions we were given. Our life will become a church, our time will become a sacrifice, and we will be priests to transform the world into the kingdom of God.
