혹시 여러분은 죄책감을 최초로 느낀 기억이 언제쯤이십니까? 저는 아주 어린 나이에 있었던 한 가지 일로 인해서 좀 일찍 죄책감에 대한 고민을 했던 것 같습니다. 제가 초등학교에 들어가기 전까지 아버지께서 거제도에 있는 지세포 교회 강도사로 약 3년 정도를 섬기셨습니다. 그곳에서 그림처럼 아름다운 추억들이 많습니다. 교회당을 중심으로 탁구대가 있는 교육관이 조그맣게 있었고, 딸기와 귤이 있는 정원이 있었고, 목회자 사택이 있었습니다. 정원과 사택 사이 한쪽에 빨래터를 겸한 우물이 있었고, 교회당 너머에는 교회당을 관리하시는 할머니 권사님이 사셨습니다. 한 다섯 살 쯤 되었을까요? 하루는 아침에 일어나자마자 어머니께서 건너 편 할머니 권사님 댁에 가서 소금을 얻어오라고 하셨습니다. 아마 짐작하실텐데.... “할매요.... 울 엄마가 소금 얻어오라카던데요...”하고 갔다가 밥주걱으로 뺨을 세게 후려 맞았습니다. 무서워서 울면서 도망을 왔습니다. 아마도 제가 어떤 특별한 이유로 소금을 얻으러 이웃집에 가서 뺨을 맞고 돌아오는 마지막 세대가 아니었나 생각합니다. 교회당 아래쪽에는 우리 동네에서 제일 잘 살아서 유일하게 TV가 있었던, 그런데 딸이 벙어리였던 집이 있었고, 교회당 주변으로 성도들이 옹기종기 모여 살았습니다. 동네 꼬마들이 날만 밝으면 교회당으로 모여서 놀았고, 놀다가 야단맞으면 들판으로, 산으로, 바다로 나갔습니다. 교회당 뒤편에는 저수지가 있었고, 저수지 위로 맑은 개울들이 있었고, 그리고 겨울이면 고드름이 송송 열리는 작은 계곡들이 있었습니다.

하지만 모든 기억이 아름답지만은 않습니다. 저의 죄책감과 관련한 사건이 있었습니다. 하루는 3-4명이 친구들과 교회당을 누비면서 놀다가 바닥에 떨어진 동전들을 발견했습니다. 교회당 뒤쪽에는 성미를 모으는 함이 있었고, 그 위에 헌금봉투를 칸칸이 꽂아놓는 나무로 만든 가구가 있었습니다. 그 아래에 당시 저희들로서는 꽤 큰 가치가 있었던 동전들이 떨어져 있었습니다. 우와아~~~ 모두가 환호성을 질렀습니다. 누가 먼저랄 것 없이 동전을 주워서 동네 구멍가게로 갔습니다. 천국의 맛을 봤습니다. 그리고 몇 주가 지났습니다. 어린이 예배를 드린다고 교회당으로 갔습니다. 저보다 나이가 한 살 많고 항상 행동이 앞서는 ‘동화’라는 친구가 매를 맞고 있었습니다. 당시에 여집사님이셨던 동화의 어머니가 손바닥으로 무자비하게 동화를 때렸습니다. 눈물을 글썽이면서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “야, 니놈아... 도대체 뭐가 될려고 교회에서 헌금을 훔치냐! 어디서 그런 못된 버릇을 배웠냐!” 알고 보니 문제의 바로 그날, 교회당 바닥에 떨어진 동전맛을 본 동화가 혹시나 하고 헌금 봉투를 탈탈 털어보다가 기도하러 오셨던 어머니에게 들킨 겁니다. 눈앞에서 몇 주 전에 짜릿한 동전의 맛을 함께 나누던 친구가 무참하게 맞는 것을 보면서, 그 친구의 도움을 청하는 애절한 눈빛을 보면서, 아들을 향한 어머니의 절망과 분노를 보면서... 그리고 만약 아버지께서 이 일을 아실 경우에는 나는 유명을 달리하겠구나... 생각을 하면서... 계속 구경군 모드로 서 있기만 했습니다.

나도... 당신의 아들과 함께 그 일을 했었노라고... 우리가 알고 한 건 아니고... 동전이 떨어져 있어서 주운 것 뿐이라고... 다시는 안그럴테니 좀 용서해주시면 안되겠냐고.... 말을 하고 싶었지만 두려웠고, 그 친구를 볼 때마다 미안했고, 혹시 넘어지거나 다치면 그 일 때문에 하나님이 벌을 주는 것 같고... 하나님이 저를 지켜보시는 것 같아서... 교회 갈 때마다 마음이 무거웠고... 오랫동안 죄책감에 시달렸습니다.

1. 교회는 우리에게 무엇일까요?

얼마 전에 다른 교회 성도 한 분이 제게 어떻게 목회자가 될 결심을 했느냐고 물었습니다. 사실 저는 딱히 목사가 되어야겠다고 결심을 한 기억이 없습니다. 너무 당연하고 자연스럽게 지금 이렇게 되어 있습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 지금 제가 목회자로 사는 것은 제가 경험했던 교회의 결과입니다. 이 말이 이해가 되십니까? 저는 교회에서 태어났고, 교회에서 성장했고, 교회에서 배웠고, 교회에서 삶을 계획했습니다. 제가 경험한 교회의 결과로 저는 이렇게 삽니다. 참 감사한 일이라고 생각합니다. 그런데 사실 지난 주에 저는 좀 심란했습니다. 독일로 떠나는 하연이를 지켜보면서 저 아이에게 교회란 어떤 의미일까...?라는 고민을 했었습니다. 저 아이는 교회를 어떻게 경험했을까? 어떻게 경험하게 될까? 이제 18세, 아직 보호받고 사랑받아야 할 나이인데 자신의 미래를 위해 어려운 결정을 하고 독일이라는 다시 새로운 환경으로 떠나야 하는 이 아이에게 우리 교회가 한 일, 할 일, 할 수 있는 일은 무엇일까....? 이 교회를 섬기는 목회자로 많은 생각을 했었습니다. 바라기는 하연이에게 최소한 정말 힘들고 어려울 때.... 다시 돌아와서 쉴 수 있고, 힘들다고 말할 수 있고, 힘을 얻을 수 있고, 구체적인 힘을 얻어도 부끄럽거나 부담이 되지 않는 교회 정도는 되어야겠다, 되면 좋겠다 생각했습니다.

나아가서 우리의 자녀들에게 교회는 어떻게 경험되고 있을까요? 흔히들 2세들이 교회를 떠나는 이유를 부모들을 통해서 경험한 교회 때문이라고 말합니다. 수많은 이민 교회들이 다투고 분열했습니다. 부모들을 통해서 듣는 교회에 대한 이야기, 교회의 사람들에 대한 이야기가 우리 자녀들의 마음 속에 교회에 대한 그림을 만들어버렸습니다. 성장하고 자신이 판단해야 할 시기에 그들이 경험했던 교회가 그들의 오늘의 교회로 가는 발걸음을 가로막는다는 겁니다.

2. 우리가 경험하는 교회

어느새 우리는 2018년의 12월 첫 주일을 맞이했습니다. 하나님은 우리의 신앙으로 사는 삶을 도우시려고 교회를 허락하셨습니다. 지난 한 해 우리는 교회를 어떻게 경험했습니까?

제가 2013년 2월에 ‘이웃’이라는 주제로 20회 말씀을 나눈 일이 있습니다. 그 중에 ‘감자탕교회’라는 별명을 가진 광염교회를 소개한 일이 있습니다. 그 교회를 개척설립하고 목회를 하시는 조현삼 목사님은 “행복한 교회, 행복한 성도가 되기 위해서는 관계에서의 자유를 누려야 한다”고 강조합니다. 조목사님이 말씀하는 행복한 관계의 8가지 원칙을 다시 한번 소개드립니다. 1) 연약한 것은 도와주라. 2) 필요는 채워주라. 3) 허물은 덮어주라. 4) 좋은 것은 말해주라. 5) 능력은 인정해주라. 6) 가족은 돌봐주라. 7) 이웃은 더불어 살라. 8) 원수는 없애라. “사람과 사람 사이, 통하면 이웃이요 막히면 원수다!”

통찰력이 있는 말씀입니다. 한번 따라 해 봅시다. 저는 이 마지막 말씀이 꽤 마음에 들기는 합니다. “사람과 사람 사이, 통하면 이웃이요 막히면 원수다.” 하지만 저는 이 말씀을 조금 바꾸고 싶습니다. “사람과 사람 사이, 통하면 교회요, 막히면 세상이다.”

지난 한 해 저는 여러분들이 어떻게 교회를 경험하셨는지 자세하게 알지 못합니다. 소망하기는 성령 하나님의 소통케하시는 역사가 경험되었기를 바라고, 우리를 변화시키는 능력이 경험되었기를 바라고, 십자가의 은혜와 사랑이 경험되었기를 바라고... 그리고 이런 바람이 헛된 바램이 아니기를 바랍니다. 현대교회, 특별히 이민 교회가 서로에게 좋은 경험을 주는 교회가 되기가 참 힘든 것 같습니다. 소망하건데 우리가 서로에게 경험시키는 교회됨이 우리 세대와 자녀들의 세대에 더 나은 믿음과 헌신의 이유가 되면 좋겠습니다.

3. 초대교회, 하나님을 경험하다.

오늘 우리가 본문에서 만나는 예루살렘 교회 또한 서로를 교회로 경험하고 있습니다. 좋은 경험만 있을까요? 그렇지는 않습니다. 사도행전은 성령 하나님의 교회를 통한 역사하심의 기록이거니와 교회들에 대한 기록입니다. 그들은 늘 성령으로 충만하고 감사하고 기뻐하고 서로를 격려하고 세우는 교회였을까요? 그렇지는 않습니다. 오늘 본문을 보시면 그들은 갈등합니다. 시기하고 질투합니다. 본문 6장 전후 4,5장과 7,8장을 보시면 교회는 분열하고 핍박당하고 시험당하며 흩어지고 고난을 당합니다. 1세기 초대교회 성도들은 그렇게 교회를 경험합니다.

그 결과는 무엇일까요? 사도행전에서 이 모든 일들을 정리하고 있는 말들이 있습니다. 바로 성령의 역사와 교회의 성장입니다. 세상이 교회를 통해서 하나님을 만나는 일입니다. 사도행전의 흐름을 잘 살펴보면 이런 수많은 일들이 있는 중에 성도들의 교회에 대한 경험의 결과가 무엇인지 알 수 있습니다.

사도행전 1장의 핵심은 예수님의 승천입니다. 그들은 지도자를 잃었습니다. 그런데 2장으로 넘어가면 성령이 임하십니다. 비로소 베드로가 예루살렘 광장에서 설교를 시작합니다. 놀라운 일이 있습니다. 사람들이 베드로 앞에 와서 “우리가 어찌할꼬!”(2:37)하면서 회개하기 시작합니다. 선교적 교회가 시작되었습니다. 2장 42절에 역사적인 말씀이 있지 않습니까? “그들이 사도들의 가르침을 받아 서로 교제하고 떡을 떼며 오로지 기도하기를 힘쓰니라”(행 2:42) 그리고 43절부터 47절까지 초대교회의 놀라운 역사가 나타납니다. 표적과 기사가 교회에 있고, 성도들이 능력에 따라 생산하지만 필요에 따라 분배합니다. 남은 모든 것은 하나님의 목적을 따라 선교적으로 사용됩니다. 기쁨이 있고 감사가 있고 예배가 있고 온 백성에게 칭송을 받고... 그 결과는 무엇입니까? “주께서 구원받는 사람을 날마다 더하게 하시니라!”(행 2:47)입니다. 3장은 오직 예수 그리스도의 이름입니다. 구원을 얻을 다른 이름이 없음을 성전 미문에 있는 앉은뱅이를 일으키는 사건과 설교를 통해서 증거합니다. 1-3장을 요약하면 예수님을 잃었다고 생각한 그들에게 성령이 임하고 능력이 임합니다. 예수님을 보내고 오히려 교회가 시작됩니다. 4장에서는 최초의 고난이 시작됩니다. 제사장들과 사두개인들이 와서 사도들을 핍박합니다. 그 결과는 무엇입니까? 4장 31절에서 성경은 “무리가 다 성령이 충만하여 담대히 하나님의 말씀을 전하니라”(4:31)라고 했습니다. 5장에는 초대교회 최초의 비극이 있습니다. 아나니라와 삽비라가 징계를 받아 죽습니다. 성령을 속이려 했습니다. 하나님의 영광이 아닌 자신들의 영광을 취하려고 했습니다. 로마와 유대의 더 심한 핍박이 시작되었습니다. 교회의 안과 밖에서 핍박이 있는 것입니다. 결과는 무엇일까요? 오늘 본문 6장 1절은 이렇게 시작합니다. “그때에 제자가 더 많아졌는데...”(6:1)입니다. 좋은 일일까요? 나쁜 일일까요? 당연히 좋은 일입니다. 하지만 꼭 그렇지만은 않습니다. 6장1절 하반절부터 교회의 파벌과 분열이 시작됩니다. 히브리파 유대인과 헬라파 유대인이라는 말이 등장합니다. 서로 다툽니다. 교회와 사도들의 관심이 자신들에게 부족하다고 주장합니다. 갈등이 생깁니다. 교회는 그들을 돕는 일을 전담하는 집사들을 세웁니다. 교회가 만난 최초의 갈등의 결과는 무엇일까요? 7절의 말씀입니다. “하나님의 말씀이 점점 왕성하여 예루살렘에 있는 제자의 수가 더 심히 많아지고 허다한 제사장의 무리도 이 도에 복종하니라”(행 6:7) 7장과 8장은 스데반의 순교입니다. 대대적인 박해가 있습니다. 그 결과는 무엇일까요? 8장 4절과 8절이 결론입니다. 4절에는 “그 흩어진 사람들이 두루 다니며 복음의 말씀을 전할 쌔...”(8:4)이고 8절은 “그 성에 큰 기쁨이 있더라”(8:8)입니다. 9장에 가면 예루살렘에서 박해를 피해서 다메섹으로 갔던 성도들을 추적하는 사람이 등장합니다. 사울이라는 바리새파 열혈 청년입니다. 그런데 9장이 끝나기 전에 그는 복음을 전하는 사람으로 바뀝니다. 사도행전의 교회는 늘 어려움을 당하고 유혹과 시험 중에 있습니다. 아직 어리고 많은 문제를 안고 있습니다. 그러나 교회를 세우시고 붙드시는 분은 성령 하나님이십니다. 교회가 완전해서가 아니라 하나님이 계시기 때문이고, 성도들이 완전해서가 아니라 성령이 역사하기 때문입니다.

4. 새로운 경험을 기대하며

12월이 되면 고민이 많아지는 것 같습니다. 한 해가 또 이렇게 지나가는구나.... 돌아보면 참 빨리... 충분하지 않은.... 흘러간 시간에 대해 뭔가 허전하고 부족한 것 같은 느낌을 받습니다. 교회에 대해서도 그렇습니다. 우리가 말하기 좋아하고 꿈꾸는 교회가 있지 않습니까? 그런데 우리의 현실이 그렇지 못합니다. 교회는 ‘사람들’입니다. 서로의 연약함이 계속 드러납니다. 갈등이 있습니다. 저 성도 좀 저렇게 안하면 좋겠습니다. 저 성도는 좀 이렇게 해주면 좋겠습니다. 뭔가 말을 하면 다툼이 생길 것 같고, 말을 안하면 속이 터질 것 같습니다. 어떤 성도는 오해를 만들고, 어떤 성도는 오해를 합니다. 어떤 성도는 일을 만들고, 어떤 성도는 지나치게 일 합니다. 어떤 성도는 관심이 부담스럽고 어떤 성도는 관심이 필요합니다. 생각해보면 1세기 예루살렘 교회가 가졌던 모든 문제는 21세기 현대교회에서 계속 반복되고 있습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 교회는 무엇이라 했습니까? 사람들이기 때문입니다. 사람들이 교회이기 때문에 사람의 모든 문제는 교회의 모든 문제입니다.

소망하기는 너무 낙심하거나 실망하지 않으시면 좋겠습니다. 1세기 초대교회에서도 그러했고, 2000년 교회의 역사가 증명하는 것이 있습니다. 사도행전의 각 장마다 증거하고 있는 것은 교회의 문제와 연약함과 핍박과 갈등입니다. 그리고 각 장마다 증거하는 것은 하나님의 역사하심입니다. 교회는 사람들이지만... 그러나 교회는 사람들이 아닙니다. 사람들은 세상 곳곳에 넘쳐납니다. 교회는 하나님의 사람들입니다. 교회의 주인은 하나님이십니다. 하나님이 일하시는 곳에 교회입니다. 우리는 교회를 통해서 하나님을 경험하고 하나님이 사람들에 대해 역사하시는 것을 경험합니다. 물론 우리는 사람들의 연약함과 문제를 함께 경험합니다. 나 또한 다른 성도들에게는 사람의 연약함을 학습하게 하는 도구가 되고 있습니다. 하지만 하나님께서 사도행전을 우리에게 허락하시면서 확증하시는 것이 있습니다. 사람들의 연약함, 하나님의 사람들이 여전히 극복하지 못하는 문제.... 그 어떤 것이라도 예수 그리스도의 십자가의 은혜를 넘어서지 못한다는 것입니다. 성령 하나님의 역사하심을 넘어서지 못한다는 것입니다. 핍박이 있고, 박해가 있고, 스데반이 죽고, 아니니아와 삽비라가 죽고, 교회가 사랑이 없다고 비난하고 다툼이 있어도.... 하나님은 하나님의 교회를 지키시고 인도하십니다. 하나님이 주인이시기 때문입니다.

5살 어린 나이에 교회를 통해서 죄책감을 경험한 저는 지금 여러분께 말씀을 전하고 있습니다. 저의 의지가 아니라 하나님이 인도하셨음을 믿습니다. 2018년에 여러분은 어떻게 교회를 경험하셨습니까? 행복한 경험이셨기를 바랍니다. 하지만 혹 우리의 경험이 교회를 결정하지 않습니다. 내가 만족한 경험을 했다고 해서 우리가 충분히 좋은 교회인 것이 아닙니다. 내가 만족하지 못한다고 해서 교회됨이 부족한 것도 아닙니다. 우리는 하나님의 사람들이요, 부족하고 연약한 사람들입니다. 우리의 모든 부족함을 채우시는 하나님의 은혜를 사모하면서... 서로에게 더욱 좋은 교회를 경험시킬 수 있는 더 좋은 교회를 결단하는 2018년 12월이 되기를 바라고, 우리의 결단을 넘어서는 성령 하나님의 인도하심을 사모합니다.

               When do you remember the first time you felt guilty? I think I was worried about guilt a little early because of one thing that happened at a very young age. Until I entered elementary school, my father served for about three years as a jisepo church associate pastor in Geoje Island. I have are many picturesque memories there. There was a small educational center with ping pong around the church hall, a garden with strawberries and tangerines, and a pastoral residence. Between the garden and the house there was a well that served as a washing room, and beyond the church hall the old lady who managed the church had lived. One thing happened  when I was around 5 year old. As soon as I got up in the morning one day, my mother asked me to go to the old lady's house to get some salt. Maybe you would guess. "Mom told me to get salt,” I said to her. And then I was slapped across the face with a spatula. I was scared and we ran away. Maybe I was the last generation who went to my neighbors to get salt and was slapped on my cheek for some special reason. At the bottom of the church there was a family which only had a TV among the neighborhood, but the daughter was dumb. And the church members lived together around the church hall. When day broke, the children in the neighborhood gathered in the church hall and played together, and when they were scolded, they went to the fields, the mountains, and the sea. There was a reservoir behind the church hall, there were clear streams over the reservoir, and in the winter there were small valleys where the icicles spread.  

              But not all memories are beautiful. There was an incident related to my feeling guilty. One day, I played in the church hall with my three or four friends and found coins fallen on the floor. In the back of the church hall there was a compilation of temperament, and on top of that was a piece of furniture made of wood that had a box of donations in it. Below them were coins that were of great value for us at the time. Wow! Everyone cheered. All of us picked up coins and went to a store. I felt the taste of heaven. And a few weeks had passed. I went to the church hall for a child worship service. There was a friend named "Dong-hwa", who is one year older than me and always ahead of action. He was whipped there. At that time, his mother, who was a deaconess, beat him ruthlessly with her palms. She  tearfully said, "Hey, you ... why are you stealing offerings from the church? What do you want to when grown up? Where did you learn such a bad habit?" The fact was that on the very day he who had tasted the benefit of coins fallen on the floor before touched the offering envelopes expecting coins, and got caught by his mother who came to pray. Looking at his mother's despair and resentment toward his son, looking at the sad and seeking-help eyes of my friends who shared the taste of coins a few weeks, and thinking that I will die if my father knows this, I just kept standing in the bystander mode.  

               ‘I did it, too. I also did it with your son. We did not know that. We just picked up the coins because they were fallen on the floor. We won’t do it again. Can you forgive us?’ I wanted to say that, but I was afraid, I was sorry every time I saw him, and if I fell or got hurt, it seemed that God punishes me ... and God seems to be watching me. When I went to the church, I felt very sorry and heavy. I had been feeling guilty for a long time.

1. 교회는 우리에게 무엇일까요?

               Not long ago, a member of another church asked me how I decided to become a pastor. Actually, I do not remember having decided to become a pastor. It was so natural and now I do so naturally. Why? To live as a pastor is the result of my experience of the church. Do you understand this? I was born in church, grew up in church, learned in church, and planned my life in church. As a result of the church I have experienced, I have lived like this. I really appreciate it. In fact, last week I was upset a little bit. As I watched Amy going to Germany, I was worried about what the church means to her. How did she experience the church? How will she experience it? Now, at 18, she is still in need of protection and love, but what our Church did, what we will do, and what we can do to her who has to make a difficult decision for her future and leave for Germany again? I thought a lot as a pastor serving this church. I hope it will be a church that embraces her when she comes back and rests and get strength from it when she really feels difficult and hard time. 

               How is the church experienced in our children? The reason that many  second generation people leave the church is often because of the church experienced through their parents. Numerous korean immigrant churches have quarreled and divided. The story of the church heard through parents, and the story of the church people have created a picture of the church in the hearts of our children. The churches they have experienced at the time of their growth and their own judgments are blocking their steps towards their church today.

2. 우리가 경험하는 교회

               We have just arrived on the first Sunday of December, 2018. God allowed the church to help us live our faith. How did we experience the church last year?

         I have spoken 20 times in February 2013 on the subject of "neighbors." Among them, I have introduced Seoul Light/Salt church with the nickname "Gamja-tang church." Senior pastor Cho, Hyun-sam, who founded and pioneered the church, emphasizes, "In order to be a happy church and a happy christian, we must enjoy freedom in relationships." Let me introduce again the eight principles of the happy relationship that pastor Cho speaks. 1) Help the weak. 2) Fill the needs. 3) Cover the transgressions. 4) Tell something good. 5) Confirm the ability. 6) Take care of your family. 7) Live with your neighbors. 8) Destroy the enemy. "Between man and man; neighbors if communicated, enemies if not communicated!”

               It is an insightful word. Let's read it together. I like the last word. "Between man and man, neighbors if communicated, enemies if not communicated." But I want to change this word a little. "Between man and man, a church if communicated, a world if not communicated."

               I do not know in detail how you have experienced the church last year. Hopefully, I hope that the communicating works of the Holy Spirit has been experienced, that the ability to change us has been experienced, that the grace and love of the cross have been experienced, and that these hopes are not in vain. It seems difficult for modern churches, especially immigrant churches, to become churches that give good experiences to each other. I hope that the church we experience in each other will be a reason for better faith and dedication to our generation and the generation of our children.

3. 초대교회, 하나님을 경험하다.

               The Jerusalem church we meet today also experiences each other as a church. Is there any good experience only? It is not. Acts is a record of the work of the Holy Spirit through the church, and it is a record of the churches. Are they always full of the Holy Spirit, thankful, rejoicing, encouraging and building each other? It is not. In today's words, they are in conflict. They envy and be jealous. See before and after ch. 6, in other words ch. 4-5, and ch. 7-8 show that the church is divided, persecuted, tested, scattered, and afflicted. In the first century, the early church christians experience the church. 

               What is the result? There are words in the book of Acts that summarize all these things. It is the work of the Holy Spirit and the growth of the church. The world is meeting God through the church. Looking at the flow of Acts can reveal the consequences of the christians' experience of the Church in the midst of so many things. 

               The point of Acts Ch. 1 is the ascension of Jesus. They lost their leader. But if you go to ch. 2, the Holy Spirit comes on. Peter begins preaching in the Square of Jerusalem. There is an amazing thing. People come to Peter and begin to repent, "What shall we do?" (Acts 2:37). The missional church has begun. Is there a historical word in 2:42? "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:42), and from v. 43 to 47 the wonderful work of the Early Church appears. The signs and wonders are in the church, and the christians produce according to their abilities, but distribute them according to the needs. All leftover are used as a missionary for God's purposes. There is joy, thanksgiving, worship, praise to all the people. What is the result? "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved" (Acts 2:47). Ch. 3 is only the name of Jesus Christ. It testifies through the events and sermons that raise up a cripple in the temple gate that there is no other name to be saved. To summarize ch. 1-3, the Holy Spirit comes to them and their power comes to those who think they have lost Jesus. Jesus was sent, but rather the church begins. In Ch. 4, the first hardship begins. The priests and the Sadducees come and persecute the apostles. What is the result? In 4:31, the Bible says, "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly" (Acts 4:31). Ch. 5 has the first tragedy of the Early Church. Ananias and Sapphira are killed in disciplinary punishment. They tried to deceive the Holy Spirit. They tried to take their glory, not the glory of God. More severe persecution of Rome and Jewish began. There is persecution both inside and outside the church. What is the result? Today's words Ch. 6:1 begins this way. "In those days when the number of disciples was increasing..." (Acts 6:1). Is it a good thing? Or a bad thing? Of course it is a good thing. But not necessarily. From the second half of Chapter 6-1, church faction and division begins. The Hellenistic Jews and Hebraic Jews appear. They are different. They argue that the churches and apostles are lacking in their interest. Conflicts arise. The church sets up deacons dedicated to helping them. What is the outcome of the first conflict that the church met? It is the word of v. 7. "So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith" (Acts 6:7) Ch. 7 and 8 are Stephen's martyrdom. There is massive persecution. What is the result? Ch. 8:4 and 8:8 conclude. V. 4 says, "Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went" (8:4). V. 8 says, "So there was great joy in that city" (8:8). In ch. 9, a person who traces the christians who went to Damascus to avoid persecution in Jerusalem appears. He is Saul, a young man of the Pharisees. But before ch. 9 ends, he turns into a person who preaches the gospel. The church of Acts is always in trouble, temptation, and test. It is still young and has

 a lot of problems. But the one who sets up and sustains the church is the Holy Spirit. It is not because the church is perfect, but because God is there, and because the Holy Spirit is working, not because the christians are perfect.

4. 새로운 경험을 기대하며

               It seems that there will be more thoughts in December. Another year passes again like this. It passes very fast when I look back. It is not enough. I feel like I am missing something about the time I spent. It is also true of the church. Is not there a church we like to talk about and dream about? But our reality is not so. The church is 'people'. The weakness of each other is constantly revealed. There is conflict. I wish him not to do it this way. I wish her to do it this way. When I say something, it seems to be a controversy. But if I won’t say that, I’d like to be exploded. Some members make misunderstandings, Some misunderstand. Some make works, Some  work too much. Some are burdensome, and some need attention. All the problems of the early Jerusalem church have been repeated in the 21st century modern church. Why? What is the church? Because it is people. Because people are churches, all the problems of man are all matters of the church.   

               I hope you are not in despair or be disappointed. There is something that was also true of the first century church, and the 2000 years history of the church proves. It is the church's problems, weaknesses, persecutions, and conflicts that every each chapter of the book of Acts testifies. And it is God's work that every chapter witnesses. Church is people. But church is not people. People flood in the world. The church is the people of God. The owner of the church is God. It is a church where God works. We experience God through the church and experience God working for people. Of course, we experience people's weaknesses and problems, too. I am also a tool for other christians to learn the weakness of man. However, there is something God confirms by granting us the book of Acts. The weakness of people, the problems that God's people still can not overcome.... Nothing can go beyond the grace of the cross of Jesus Christ. It does not go beyond the work of the Holy Spirit. Even though there is persecution, the death of Stephen, the death of Anna and Sapphira, the criticism of church due to the lack of love, and contention, God keeps and guides the Church of God. It is because God is the owner and the Lord.

               I felt guilty through the church at a young age of five, but I am telling you now. I believe that God led me, not my will. How did you experience the Church in 2018? I hope it was a happy experience. But our experience does not determine the church. I am not a good enough church because I have had a satisfying experience. I am not short of church because I am not satisfied. We are the people of God, the need and the weak. I hope that in December 2018, we will have decided being a better church that will experience a better church for each other, and that we will be led by God longing for the grace of God who can fill our all needs.
