There is such a poem in Korean. You may have heard of it.

눈 내리는 벌판 한 가운데를 걸을 때라도

어지럽게 걷지 말라.

오늘 내가 걸어간 이 발자국이

뒤따라오는 사람들에게 이정표가 되리니

 

Even when you walk in the middle of a snowy field

Do not walk dizzy.

This footprint I walked today

It will be a milestone for followers.

 

서산대사가 썼다고 알려져 있기도 하지만 실은 이양연(李亮淵 1771~1653)이라는 선비가 썼습니다. 묻혀 있던 이 시가 유명해진 것은 두 사람 때문입니다. 그 중 첫 번째 사람은 백범 김구입니다. 그는 이 글을 좋아했고, 안두희에게 암살 당하기 1년 전 자신이 젊었을 때 신세를 진 적이 있는 마곡사라는 절에 머물면서 이 시를 써서 기증했습니다.

 

It is well known that Ambassador Seosan wrote it, but in fact, it was written by Lee Yong Yeon (1771 ~ 1653). It is because of two people that this buried poem became famous. The first person is Kim Gu. He liked this poem and rewrote it and donated in a temple named Magusa, where he stayed when he was younger.

 김구 선생 정도 되면 이런 글을 쓰고, 이런 역사적 의무로 살았다고 해도 결코 지나치지 않습니다. 그리고 이글은 최근에 다시 유명해졌습니다. 문재인 대통령의 집무실인 여민1관에 김구 선생의 큰 초상화와 함께 친필로 적힌 이 시가 있습니다. 대한민국의 대통령 쯤 되는 사람이라면 이정도의 역사적 의무와 책임으로 사는 것은 좋은 일 같습니다.

 

This poem has recently become famous again. There is a big portrait of Kim Gu and his handwritten poem on the 1st floor of the office of President Moon Jae-in in Korea. If you are the President of the Republic of Korea, it is a good thing to live with this historical duty and responsibility.

 

비슷한 메시지를 전달하는 다른 이야기가 있습니다. 아마추어 사이클 대회가 열렸습니다. 평소에 자전거 타기를 좋아하고 대부분의 운동에서 아마추어 이상의 기량을 펼치는 운동광이었던 주인공은 출발 총성이 울리자 선두권으로 튀어나갔습니다. 열심히 달렸습니다. 그런데 갑자기 배가 아프기 시작했습니다. 어떻하지... 어쩌지... 도저히 참을 수 없는 지경이 되었습니다. 안절부절 정신없이 달리다보니 마침 그곳이 한강변에 위치한 자기 집과 가까웠습니다. 안되겠다... 빨리 집에 가서 해결해야겠다.... 그는 선두권에서 같이 달리던 친구에게 사정을 설명했습니다. 친구가 따라 가주겠다고 했습니다. 두 사람은 곁길로 빠져서 자기 아파트 단지로 후다닥 들어갔습니다. 일을 마치고 나와보니 큰 일이 났습니다. 그 두 사람의 뒤를 따르던 많은 사람들이 아파트 단지까지 따라와서 우왕좌왕하고 있었던 것입니다.

 

There is another story that conveys a similar message. The amateur cycling contest was held. The main character, who was an athlete who likes to ride a bike and exercises more than others lead the pack of racers.  Suddenly his stomach started to hurt. He didn’t know what to do.  He was near his friend’s house.  He explained the matter to a friend who was also was in the lead.   My friend told me to follow him. The two took a detour and ride toward the friend hour but other who were following them also follow them instead of riding in a correct route. 

1. 다른 사람들에 대한 책임

자, 사이클 대회에 나갔다가 집으로 들어간 두 사람에게 무슨 잘못이 있을까요? 자기 앞길 달리기도 바쁘고, 당장 화장실은 급한데 자기 뒤에서 자기를 보고 따라온 사람들까지 책임져야 할 필요가 있을까요? 혹은 눈이 내려서 세상에 덮이고 무엇이 길인지를 분간할 수 없는 상황에서 하얀 벌판을 걷는 나그네가 있다고 합시다. 어디로 갈까를 고민하면서 길을 찾아 헤매고 있습니다. 그의 발걸음을 책망할 수 있을까요? 그에게 왜 제대로 걷지 못하고 다른 사람들이 걸어야 할 길의 이정표를 만들지 못하느냐고 책임을 물을 수 있을까요? 저는 NO! 아니요?!라고 대답할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 그리고 Yes! 예! 그렇습니다! 라고 대답할 수도 있습니다.

 

So, what's wrong with the two guys who went into the cycling tour and then went home? Do you need to be responsible for the people who have been following you in the back?  Let's say that there is a traveler who walks in the white field in a situation where the snow falls and covers ground and can-not tell what is the correct way. Can I blame his footsteps? Could you ask him why he can not walk properly and that he can’t make direction for others?  You can say No or Yes.

 

왜 아닐까요? 사람들은 결국 각자의 책임을 감당해야 하기 때문입니다. 내가 하나님 앞에서 저 사람 때문에 이런 저런 잘못된 삶을 살았노라고 변명할 수 있을까요? 아닙니다. 결국 선택은 자신이 하는 것이고, 결과 또한 자신의 책임입니다. 사이클 대회에 출전한 사람은 자신이 가야 할 길과 가지 말아야 할 길의 경계를 파악하고 있어야 합니다. 눈 덮힌 계곡을 걷는 나그네 또한 다른 사람의 발자국만 바라볼 것이 아니라 자신의 길을 찾아야 할 의무가 있습니다. 따라서 눈 덮힌 산길을 걷는 나그네와 사이클 대회에 나갔던 배 아픈 선수는 다른 사람에 대해 책임질 필요가 없습니다.

 

Why No is correct? People are ultimately responsible for their own responsibilities. Can I make an excuse that I lived a wrong life in front of God because of him? no. In the end, the choice is what you do, and the outcome is your responsibility. The person who participated in the cycling tournament should be aware of the boundaries between the incorrect road to go and the correct way. A traveler who walks in a snow-covered valley is also obligated to look for his own way, not just to look at other people's footprints. So strangers walking on snowy mountain trails and athletes who went on a cycling tour do not have to take responsibility for others.

 

그렇다면 왜 Yes! 일까요? 우리가 함께 살고 있기 때문이고, 우리는 보다 높은 가치와 연결된 삶을 추구하고 있기 때문입니다. 더 높은 가치, 더 나은 삶을 사는 한 사람으로서의 살지 않기로 결심한다면, 그저 앞만 보고 살기로, 나의 필요와 욕구를 만족시키고 살기로 결정한다면 yes가 아니어도 됩니다. ‘김구 쯤 되니까 저런 글을 쓰는거지... 대통령 집무실에 걸려 있으니까 폼 나는 거지.... 우리는 그냥 각자도생하는거야... 나 한 사람 챙기기도 힘든데 언제 다른 사람까지 신경 써....’ 만일 우리에게 신앙이 없고, 예수가 없고, 진리가 없고, 복음이 없다면... 만일 우리가 하나님의 자녀가 아니고 성도가 아니고 교회가 아니라면.... 만일 우리가 나 하나 사는 것이 인생의 목적이라면, 나의 만족과 필요가 내 삶을 움직이는 동력이라면... 그렇다면 이렇게 말하도 됩니다. 그러나 여러분, 우리에게 신앙이 있고, 우리가 성도이고 교회이기 때문에, 우리가 하나님의 자녀이며 그 나라의 백성이기 때문에.... 우리는 이 땅에 사는 피조물의 본능으로 사는 사람들이 아니라, 하늘로부터 오는 부르심을 받아서 성도와 교회라고 불리며 살기 때문에 우리는 고민해야 합니다.

 

Then why Yes? Because we live together, and we are pursuing a life connected with higher values. If you decide not to live as a person who lives a higher value, you can just decide to live only in what’s in front you and satisfy your needs and desires. I can not even take care of one person. 'If we have no faith, no Jesus, no truth, and no gospel ... If we are not children of God, not saints, not churches ... If we are one of the If my satisfaction and need are the driving force of my life ... then I can say No!. But, because we are faithful, we are saints and churches, because we are the children of God, we have to think of others.

2. 흔들리는 사람, 반석이 되는 사람

우리는 지난 주에 이어서 베드로에 대해 생각하고 있습니다. 오늘 본문의 상황에서 예수님이 좀 너무한다고 생각하지는 않으십니까? 베드로가 당할 수치와 모멸을 이렇게 훤히 잘 아시면서도 예수님은 베드로에게 사명을 주고 있습니다. “너는 돌이킨 후에 네 형제를 굳게 하라!” 베드로는 ‘돌이킨다’는 말이 무슨 말인지 이해하지 못하고 있고, 인정하지 않고 있습니다. 그래서 죽기까지 주님을 따른다는 말을 반복합니다. 예수님은 그가 두려움에 사로잡혀서 예수님을 버리고 부인하고 도망할 것을 말씀하십니다. 그런 사람, 그렇게 못난 사람... 자신이 얼마나 연약하고 못났는지도 모르는 그 사람 - 예수님은 그런 사람에게 교회를 세우는 사명을 주십니다.

 

We are thinking about Peter last week. Do not you think that Jesus is a little too much in the context of today's text? Though he knows this shame and blasphemy, Jesus gives a mission to Peter. "After you turn away, strengthen your brother!" Peter does not understand what it means to say "turn around" and does not recognize it. So he repeats that he will follow the Lord until he  dies. Jesus tells him that he is caught up in fear and forsakes Jesus and denies and flees. To he who does not know how fragile he is - Jesus gives a mission to build a church.

어떤 모습의 베드로가 진짜 베드로의 본 모습일까요? 갈대처럼 흔들리는 사람입니까? 아니면 반석이 되어 교회를 세우는 사람입니까? 여러분은 이 두 베드로 중에서 어떤 베드로가 그의 실체에 가깝다고 생각하십니까? 저는 갈대처럼 흔들리는 베드로가 그의 인간적인 실존에 가깝다고 생각합니다. 하지만 그것은 그가 예수를 만나기 전이고, 만났어도 자기를 부인하기 전이고, 자기를 부인하려고 노력해도... 성령 하나님과 동행하기 전입니다. 예수님께서 아직 자신의 영적 실존에 대해 깨닫지 못한 베드로에게 말씀하십니다. “너는 돌이킨 후에.....”

 

What kind of Peter is the true figure of Peter? Is he a person who shakes like a reed? Or is he a like a rock who builds a church? Which of these two Peter do you think is closer to his reality? I think that Peter, who is shaking like a reed, is close to his human existence. But before he met Jesus, and met him before he denied himself.. before he walked with the Holy Spirit. Jesus speaks to Peter, who has not yet realized his spiritual existence. "After you turn around ....."

3. 베드로에 대한 부르심

베드로에 대한 두 가지 부르심을 기억하십니까? 마가복음에서는 ‘사람을 낚는 어부’였습니다. 요한복음에서는 ‘반석’입니다. 그리고 오늘 누가복음 본문에서 베드로는 자신을 향한 예수님의 또 하나의 부르심을 듣습니다. ‘네 형제를 굳게 하라!’입니다. 베드로가 이 부르심을 실현하기 전에 해야 할 일이 있습니다. 거쳐야 하는 과정이 있습니다. 그것은 바로 자신을 부인하는 것, 그가 살아온 삶의 가치와 방향을 돌이키는 것, 두려움과 염려와 근심과 걱정으로 살던 삶, 자기만족과 욕구충족으로 살던 삶에서 돌이키는 것, 예수를 믿어도 나를 위해서 믿고 제자가 되어도 나를 위해서였고, 십자가를 진다고 해도 나의 영광을 먼저 생각했던 삶에서 이제는 돌이키는 것입니다. 그 모든 세상으로부터의 흔들림을 끝내는 것입니다. 예수님은 십자가 앞에서 가장 크게 흔들리고 있는 그에게, 곧 가장 크게 흔들리고 나락으로 떨어질 그에게 아주 중요한 말씀을 주십니다.

 

Do you remember two calls to Peter? In the Gospel of Mark, it was a "fisherman of man". In the Gospel of John it is a 'rock'. And today in Luke's Gospel text, Peter hears another call of Jesus toward Himself. 'Strengthen your brother!' Before Peter can realize this call, there is work to be done. There is a process that must go through. It is to deny himself, to change the value and direction of the life he has lived, to live in fear, anxiety, and worry, to return from a life of satisfying self-satisfaction and desire.  It is to end the shaking from the world. Jesus gives the most important word to him who is shaking most in front of the cross, the one that is most important for him to shake and fall to hell.

첫째 베드로는 흔들리는 사람입니다. 그의 맹세와 약속은 헛됩니다. 그는 두려움의 사람이요 욕망의 사람입니다. 우리와 같습니다. 사탄이 그를 조롱할 것입니다. 세상이 그를 비웃을 것입니다. 둘째 그러나 아무리 그가 연약하고 비겁해도 주님은 그를 포기하지 않으십니다. 그를 위해 기도하십니다. 예수님의 기도의 절정은 십자가입니다. 그를 위해 기도하며 십자가를 지십니다. “너의 믿음이 떨어지지 않기를 기도한다”는 예수님의 말씀은 “내가 결코 너를 포기하지 않는다”는 말씀입니다. 죽기까지 포기하지 않으십니다. 이 말씀이 베드로의 희망이요, 베드로보다 더 연약한 우리의 희망입니다. 셋째 그러므로 베드로는 돌이켜야 합니다. 끊임없이 돌이켜야 합니다. 한번 회개한다고 해서 다시 범죄하지 않는 것 아니요, 한번 결단한다고 해서 다시 비겁해지지 않는 것 아닙니다. 쉽게 망각하고 쉽게 무너집니다. 그러나 돌이켜야 합니다. 넷째, 그의 사명은 반석이 되는 것입니다. 스스로 굳건하게 서는 것입니다. 하지만 그것만은 아닙니다. 스스로 서는 것, 반석이 되어 더 이상 흔들리지 않는 것이 그를 향한 주님의 부르심의 전부가 아닙니다.

 

First Peter is a shaken man. His oath and promise are in vain. He is a man of fear and a man of desire. It is like us. Satan will mock him. The world will laugh at him. Second, though He is frail and cowardly, Lord does not give Him up. Lord pray for him. The culmination of Jesus' prayer is the cross. Jesus' words, "I pray that your faith will not fall," is "I never give up on you". You do not give up until you die. This is the hope of Peter, our weaker hope than Peter. Third, Peter must turn back. We must constantly turn. Once you repent, you will not be guilty again, and once you make a decision, you will not be cowarded again. It is easily forgotten and easily collapses. But you have to turn around. Fourth, his mission is to become a rock. It stands firmly on its own. But that's not all. It is not all the Lord's call to Him that stands on its own and becomes a rock and is no longer shaken.

하나님을 자신의 산성이요 반석이라고 표현하는 시편이 많습니다. 무슨 뜻입니까? 하나님은 그렇게 굳건하시고 변함없고 든든하신 분이십니다.... 라는 고백입니까? 그것만은 아닙니다. 하나님이 나의 산성이요, 나의 반석입니다. 내가 그 위에 든든히 서는 것입니다. 세상은 흔들리고 나는 더욱 흔들립니다. 갈 곳을 모르고 방황합니다. 그런데 하나님의 나의 반석이 되시고 산성이 되십니다. 내가 그 위에서 흔들리지 않는 굳건한 믿음의 삶을 삽니다. 하나님이 반석이 되신다는 것은 하나님이 ‘넓은 돌’이시라는 말이 아니라, 연약한 나의 삶에 대한 하나님의 역할을 고백하는 것입니다. 나를 붙드시고 도우시는 하나님을 반석으로 고백하고 있습니다.

There are many psalms that express God as rock. What does it mean? God is such a solid, unchanging, and solid person .... Is it a confession? That's not all. God is my rock. I stand firmly on it. The world shakes and I shake more and more. I do not know where I am going. But it becomes my rock. I live a steadfast faith life on it. To be a rock is not to say that God is a "wide stone," but to confess God's role in my frail life. I am confessing God who helps me and helps me.

4. 반석이 되는 사람, 이정표가 되는 삶

생각해보면 예수님은 베드로에게 일관된 부르심을 주셨습니다. 그는 자신을 위해 고기를 잡는 사람이 아니라 복음으로 사람을 낚는 어부가 되어야 합니다. 그는 돌이킨 후에 흔들리는 형제들을 굳게 하는 사명을 감당해야 합니다. 그래서 주님은 베드로에게 이 이름을 주셨습니다. 스스로 너 한 사람, 반석이 되고 굳건해지라는 말씀이 아니라 다른 형제들을 그 반석위에 세울 수 있는 반석과 같은 믿음의 사람이 되어야 한다고 말씀합니다. 이전에 베드로는 자신을 위해 믿는 사람, 자신을 위해 헌신하는 사람, 자신을 위해 제자가 된 사람이었습니다. 그런데 예수님은 그를 부르실 때부터 떠나실 때까지 일관되게 말씀하십니다. 베드로는 다른 성도와 교회에 대한 영적인 책임을 져야 하는 사람입니다. 흔들리는 베드로 앞에 흔들리지 않는 반석이셨던 예수님께서.... 내가 너를 흔들리지 않도록 기도할테니, 내가 내 생명을 너를 위해 바치면서 기도할테니, 너를 위해 내가 십자가를 질테니... 베드로야! 내가 너의 반석이 되어 나의 굳건한 십자가 위에 너를 세우는 것처럼 너도 다른 사람들을 너 위에 세우는 믿음의 사람으로 돌아오너라.... 너의 신앙의 고백과 너희 믿음 위에 다른 사람을 세우고, 네가 걷는 믿음의 길을 따라 다른 사람들이 걸을 수 있도록... 반석이 되자... 이정표가 되자... 네가 먼저 교회가 되고, 너를 따라 교회가 되게 하자.... 예수님은 십자가를 지시는 이 심각하고 의미있는 순간에 베드로에게, 모든 제자들에게, 그리고 그들보다 더 흔들리고 연약한 오늘 우리 성도와 교회에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

 

When we think about it, Jesus gave Peter a consistent call. He must be a fisherman who seizes man by the gospel, not a man who catches meat for himself. After he has turned, he has to fulfill his mission to strengthen the shaken brothers. So the Lord gave this name to Peter. He says to him, "You must be a man of faith like a rock that can build other brothers on the rock. Previously, Peter was a person who believed for himself, a devotee for himself, and a disciple for himself. But Jesus speaks consistently from the time he calls until he leaves. Peter is a person who has spiritual responsibility for other Saints and the Church. “I will pray that I will not shake you, for I will give my life for you, and I will pray for you, I will crucify you ... Peter! Just as I am your rock and you build you on my firm cross, you also turn back to a man of faith who builds others on you .... Establish others on your faith and on your faith, Let the people walk ... Become a rock ... Become a milestone ... Let us first become a church and follow you to become a church .... Jesus said in this serious and meaningful moment of crucifixion Peter To all the disciples, and to our saints and churches today, shaken and weaker than them.

 

사랑하는 초대교회 성도 여러분! 우리는 서로에 대해 책임을 지는 성도들입니다. 하나님이 우리를 그렇게 부르셨습니다. 나에게 너무 무거운 짐을 주지 마세요...나는 나 한 사람 믿음 책임지기도 힘들어요... 라고 말씀하시겠습니까? 네 그 말씀도 옳습니다. 그렇게 지내셔도 됩니다. 다만 우리 교회는, 성도들 중 누구는 마치 예수님이 그러하셨던 것처럼 여러분을 위해서 기도하고 여러분을 위해서 땀 흘리며 여러분을 위해서 십자가를 질 것입니다. 그것이 교회이고 그것이 우리를 성도와 교회로 부르신 주님의 부르심이기 때문입니다. 아니 왜 누구는 계속 연약하고 누구는 계속 헌신해야 하느냐고 하시겠습니까? 그것이 은혜입니다. 내가 연약한 베드로로 사는 것이 아니라 그를 위해 기도하는 예수님의 자리에 살 수 있다는 것이 얼마나 큰 은혜입니까? 내가 흔들리는 베드로가 아니라 돌이킨 후에 다른 성도들을 굳건하게 하고 세우는 베드로로 산다는 것이 얼마나 큰 감사입니까? 우리는 베드로처럼, 스스로 반석이 되어야 하고 서로에게 반석이 되어야 할 의무가 있습니다. 우리는 스스로 십자가의 길을 걸어야 하고, 다른 성도들이 걸어야 할 길이 되어야 할 사명이 있습니다. 주님은 오늘 베드로를 통해 우리를 그렇게 부르십니다. 그 부르심에 우리가 믿음으로, 삶으로 응답해야 합니다. 내 위에 다른 사람을 세울 수 있어야 하고, 내 발걸음으로 다른 사람들을 인도할 수 있어야 합니다.

Beloved church members! We are the saints who are responsible for each other. That's what God called us. You might say Do not give me too heavy a burden ... I am a person who I believe is hard to take responsibility ... Would you say these? Yes it is true. You can stay that way. Our church, however, will pray for you as if Jesus was, and will crucify you for you, sweating for you. It is because it is a church and it is the calling of the Lord who called us into the Saints and the Church. No, why would someone continue to be weak and who should continue to commit? That is grace. How gracious is it that I can live in the place of Jesus praying for Him rather than living like frail Peter. How much gratitude is it that I am not a shaken Peter, but Peter, who, after turning, strengthens and builds up others? We, like Peter, are obliged to be rocks themselves and to be rocks to each other. We have to walk ourselves on the path of the cross, and there is a mission that other saints must walk on. The Lord calls us through Peter today. We must respond to the call with faith and life. We need to be able to build others on top of me, and be able to lead others by my steps

이제 2018년도 한 주가 남았습니다. 지난 한 해 어떻게 사셨습니까? 많이 흔들리셨습니까? 많이 힘들었습니까? 전에 제가 한번 읽어드렸는데요... 흔들리며 젖으며 결국 아름다운 꽃으로 피어나는 우리들의 믿음이 될 수 있기를 축복합니다.

You have one week left in 2018. How did you live last year? Did you shake a lot? Was it a lot harder? I have read it before ... I bless you to be our belief that you are shaken and wet and eventually bloom like a beautiful flower.
